Hace unos días que ya trajimos el excelente disco que Bob Katsionis, teclista de Firewind editó en solitario llamado "Rest in Keys"… hablamos con él para que nos explique todo lo relacionado sobre el disco, las colaboraciones, sus inquietudes musicales y de la escena musical actual entre otras cosas….Esto es lo que nos cuenta… |

M.S: Hola Bob, gracias por tu tiempo… que tal estás?
Bob: Estoy preparándome para embarcarme en la gira de E.E.U.U. con Turisas en febrero… ¡¡será increíble!!
M.S: Entre cada disco hay una diferencia de 2 años, pero en este hay 4, porque? Por todos los proyectos que has participado? O porque has querido superarte y preparar más el material?
Bob: Es culpa de Firewind, Outloud, pero no de mi incapacidad de decir el final “¡vale, vamos a grabar esta mierda, jajajaja!”Tenía montones de ideas y proyectos inacabados y entonces, cuando encontré algo de tiempo dije “¡Es ahora o nunca!” De hecho, fue esa etapa en la que fui picado por algunos insectos durante el rodaje del video en un país vecino y no me pude ir a casa… así es cómo encontré ese “tiempo libre”, ¡gracias a esos bichos!
M.S: Vemos una gran portada y un título de disco “Rest in Keys” muy metafórico y muy “sensorial”, que nos puedes decir de todo el concepto?
Bob: ¡Tengo que admitir que la portada del disco en sí es una razón de poseer el CD! Aurelien Police hizo un gran trabajo visualizando mi música, después de una breve “entrevista” que tuvo conmigo en lo que respecta a los materiales que me gustan, las emociones que quiero expresar, etc. Y, por supuesto, todo el concepto que hay detrás de eso… ¡sólo fue el mejor juego de palabras que me vino a la mente para un álbum llevado por el teclado!
M.S: De hecho, vemos una capacidad brillante de mezclar el metal instrumental más técnico con el más melódico y pegadizo en varios temas de “Rest in Keys”, como lo ves tu?
Bob: Yo mismo soy un fan de la música melódica, no sólo del metal. Siempre busco la melodía y la armonía. No me importa quién esté tocando la melodía. Si son canciones de los Blind Guardian, Muse o Katy Perry. La melodía es siempre la melodía. Lo que cambia es el acuerdo. ¡Me gusta todo eso del death metal de Florida, el área de Bay le da una paliza a la música cósmica de Vangelis y Yanni! Eso es lo que estoy intentando hacer, unir los mundos y poner mi propio detalle en el Gran Cuadro de la Música…
M.S: Haciendo la review del disco ya lo analizamos a fondo, pero destaca por su duración de 12 min “The Four seasons of Love” por su tranquilidad y melodía… explicanos un poco que hay detrás de ese tema… no debería haber algun cambio de ritmo un poco más repentino? Al estar acostumbrados a las de Vivaldi, jeje…
Bob: Encantado de que te guste. Es verdad que los últimos dos años estuve tocando el piano más que nunca. De hecho, nunca fui pianista y no creo que alguna vez lo sea. Escribí estas cuatro partes diferentes en cuatro estaciones diferentes y estuve pensando en distribuirlas por todo el disco, cuando me vino la idea de reunirlas en una sola pista. Y, afortunadamente, cada una de ellas fue representando un período distinto de mi vida, de un Amor que había nacido, vivido, debilitado y muerto en un año.
M.S: Vemos que el disco se puede conseguir a través de tu bandcamp en diferentes opciones de compra… gestionándolo tu todo, edición del disco y los envíos… crees que es la mejor opción hoy en día?
Bob: La verdad es que Bandcamp funcionó y fue una bendición. No podía encontrar nada mejor que eso. Recuperé algo de dinero y los fans de todo el mundo tuvieron la oportunidad de encontrar mi álbum, y todo el merchandise, todo organizado y sin precios desorbitados ni nada. Sugeriría a los músicos y grupos que lo comprobasen. Es realmente grande y organizado, a menos que puedas encontrar un BUEN sello discográfico. Pero eso es… extraño que ocurra, desafortunadamente, porque las discográficas tienden a ir a la bancarrota, ya que la gente no compra, y por qué comprarlo, cuando está todo ahí y gratis. Y es por eso por lo que los grandes grupos solo crecen y los pequeños se van haciendo cada más pequeños… por no decir diminutos.
M.S: Gran parte del disco son cortes instrumentales, pero Liv Kristine, Maxi Nil y Peter Ellis cantan en 3 temas, porque ellos?
Bob: Porque hay buenas personas y sus voces encajan con las canciones al 100% Maxi es una vieja amiga mía de Atenas y siempre la he admirado. Peter Ellis fue una sorpresa y Liv… bueno… ¡qué te voy a decir!
M.S: Con Peter Ellis descubriéndolo al gran público, que nos puedes decir de él?
Bob: ¡Muy bien! Es un gran tío con el espíritu de un líder y una estrella del rock que lucha por llegar a lo más alto. Me ENCANTA su voz, es muy expresivo y, también, hicimos juntos este cover del clásico de Iron Maiden, “Moonchild”
M.S: Has pensado a hacer conciertos tocando estos temas?
Bob: Sí, cada noche, cuando me voy a la cama 🙁

M.S: Hi Bob, thank you for your time… how are you?
Bob:I’m getting ready to embark on our US tour with Turisas this February…would be just awesome!
M.S: There is a gap of two years, from one album to another, but in this one, there is a four-year-one, why? Is it due to all the projects you took part in?, or just, because you wanted to excel yourself and better prepare the material?
Bob:Blame it on Firewind,Outloud but on my inability of saying the final "ok lets burn this muthafuka",hahaha! I had tons of ideas and unfinished projects and then,when I found some time off from everything I said,"its now or never"!Actually,it was that period where I was bitten by some insects at a video shooting in a neighbor country and I couldn’t get out of my house..thats how I found this "time off"..thanx to these bugs!
M.S: We can see a great cd cover, as well as a very metaphoric and “sensory” title “Rest in Keys”, what can you tell us about the whole concept?
Bob:I have to admit that the cover of the album it self is a reason to own this CD! Aurelien Police did a great job visualizing my music,after a brief "interview" he did with me concerning the materials I like,the emotions I want to express etc. And of course the whole concept behind is that…it was just the coolest word-play that I could come up with for a keyboard-driven album!
M.S: In fact, we can notice a brilliant aptitude to mix the most technical instrumental metal with the most melodic and catchy one, in several tracks of “Rest in Keys”, what is your point of view?
Bob:I myself am a fan of melodic music.Not only metal. I always go for the melody and harmony. I dont care who is playing this melody.If its the new Blind Guardian or Muse or Katy Perry song.The melody is always the melody.Its only the arrangement which changes. I like all stuff from Florida death metal,Bay area thrash to Vangelis and Yanni cosmic music! Thats what I’m trying to do,bring worlds together and put my own detail in Great Picture Of Music…
M.S: While doing this album’s review, we can seriously analyze it, but it stands out because of its twelve-minute-length “The Four Seasons of Love”, due to its calm and melody… explain to us what is behind that track… wouldn’t there be any change of rhythm a little bit more of a sudden? Once accustomed to Vivaldi’s ones, hehe…
Bob:I’m glad you liked this one.Its true that the last 2 years I was playing the piano more than ever.Actually I was never a piano player and I dont think I’ll ever be one.I wrote these 4 different parts in four different seasons and was thinking of scattering them through the album,when I suddendly had this idea of compiling them to one track. And luckily enough,each one of them was representing a different period in the life of a Love who was born,lived,faded and died within a year.
M.S: We can see that we can get your record through you bandcamp, in different methods of purchase… by managing all by yourself, edition of the album and the delivery… do you think this is the best option nowadays?
Bob:Bandcamp really worked for me and it was a blessing!Couldnt find anything better than that! I made some money back,and the fans worldwide had the opporunity to find my album,and all merchandise,all organised and not overpriced and anything.I would suggest musicians and bands to check it out.It’s really big and organized.Unless you can find a GOOD record label.But thats like…unlikely to happen unfortunately,cause labels tend to go bankrupt cause people do not buy music anymore,and why buy it,since everything’s out there for free. And that’s why big bands get only bigger and small bands get more and smaller.Not to say..tiny.
M.S: A big part of your album consists of instrumental cuts, but Liv Kristine, Maxi Nil and Peter Ellis sing in three songs, why these singers?
Bob:Because they are good persons and their voices fit the songs 100%! Maxi is an old friend of mine from Athens and i always admired her,Peter Ellis was a surprise and Liv…well…what to say!
M.S: Having Peter Ellis being discovered to a great audience, what can you tell us about him?
Bob: Allright! He is a great guy with the spirit of a frontman and a rockstar who struggles to make his way to the top. I LOVE his voice,he is so expressive and we also did this cover of Iron Maiden’s classic "Moonhild" together!
