Viajamos hasta la fría Finlandia para traeros las declaraciones de Crimfall, otra de las bandas que estará tocando en el próximo MFVF… se presentan en MS, y nos hablan de su participación en el festival y su futuro más inmediato… |

M.S: Hola, gracias por atendernos durante unos minutos para responder a nuestras preguntas. Lo primero de todo, ¿qué tal?
Bien, gracias por preguntar. Haciendo algunas pruebas para el tercer disco, lo cual me/nos mantiene ocupado/s.
M.S: Como es la primera vez que os entrevistamos en Metal Symphony, nos gustaría que os diéseis a conocer entre nuestros lectores, hablando un poco de dónde venís, cómo se formó el grupo, cuáles son vuestras influencias…
Bueno… el grupo se llama Crimfall y somos de Finlandia. Tocamos “movie score” y el folk nórdico influenció el metal con dos cantantes. Mikko está encargado de los gritos y Helena hace las partes limpias. Mi nombre es Jakke (guitarrista/compositor/cabeza pensante) y formé este grupo en 2007 como un “proyecto de un solo hombre”. Pero estaba claro desde el principio que necesitaría ayuda de voces y letras. Así que pregunté a Mikko (quién escribe casi todas las letras para nosotros) y Helena para ayudarme con todo. El primer disco (As The Path Unfolds…) fue hecho con músicos de session, pero como queríamos que fuese un “verdadero” grupo, con conciertos y esas cosas, preguntamos a Janne (Batería) y Miska (Bajo) para que se unieran a nosotros. Janne ya estaba tocando en el disco, pero Miska sustituyó a Trollhorn que tocaba en el estudio. El segundo disco (The Writ Of Sword) fue hecho con la actual formación, además de contar con estrellas de Turisas, Finntroll y Moonsorrow.
Nuestras influencias provienen de varias fuentes. Como la mía que proviene de las bandas sonoras, es el núcleo de todo el material de Crimfall. Mikko nos trae el sonido del black metal, Helena algo de rock/pop/folk/o lo que sea que necesitemos que suene y los chicos… solo Dios sabe lo hay en nuestra música. Así que cuando se escucha a Crimfall todos estos elementos están presentes para crear una gran variación de estilos y contrastes… como Helena dijo una vez “Crimfall tiene algo que no es del agrado de todos”.
M.S: Para todos aquellos que todavía no hayan escuchado nada de vuestra música, ¿qué canciones les recomendaríais para que puedan tener una idea de cómo es vuestro sonido?
Plata y huesos. Todos estos elementos han mencionado a Crimfall bajo un único título.
M.S: ¿Tenéis algún material disponible para comprar o descargar? Si es así, ¿dónde podríamos conseguirlo o escucharlo?
Sí, ya hemos sacado dos discos. “As The Path Unfolds…” 2009 y “The Writ Of Sword” 2011. Ambos deberían estar disponibles en tiendas online por todo el mundo, al igual que en algunos canales digitales.
M.S: Tras 11 años, ¿creéis que el MFVF todavía tiene algo que ofrecer al público?
Si estás metido en este tema de chicas, MFVF es quizás el único festival donde se pueden ver a muchos grupos femme-metal a lo largo de una semana, por lo que necesitarás oír algo de Manowar para el resto del año, para devolver el equilibrio al universo. 😉
M.S: Y por vuestra parte, ¿qué ofreceréis a la gente que vaya allí y vea vuestra actuación?
Llevaremos un show enérgico para vuestros oidos y para vuestros cuellos.
M.S: ¿Algún grupo favorito que tengáis intención de ver cuando le toque actuar?
Una buena oportunidad para ver a Anneke en vivo!
M.S: Si surgiese la idea de hacer una sesión mezclada con miembros de los grupos participantes en esta edición del MFVF, ¿con quienes te quedarías? Se puede elegir más de un nombre.

M.S: A cerca de otros festivales, no hay más que un par de grupos del género femme-metal, y normalmente, los elegidos son escogidos de entre los que llevan en activo durante más de 10 años o más,… grupos como Epica, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil… ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión sobre este tema?
No considero a Crimfall como un grupo femme-metal, así que no he prestado mucha atención en este asunto. No me malinterpretéis… TENEMOS voces femeninas en nuestras canciones, pero es como decir que AC-DC es metal progresivo porque una de sus canciones tenga un sonido diferente. Bueno, a lo que íbamos… Pienso que hay algunas expectativas cuando “un par de tetas salen a escena”. Por ultimo he oído a gente decir “No me suelen gustar las voces femeninas, pero, de hecho, me gusta Crimfall”.
MS: Profundizando más sobre el tema, ¿consideráis que todavía hay vida para el género?, ¿hay más por explorar de “las conocidas voces líricas con la música metal”? Sabemos que hay grupos con voces guturales (incluso las femeninas), y otros están tratando de mezclar esta música con otros tipos como la electrónica u otros, pero todavía hay gente que no verá más allá de esta primera noción…
Siempre estarán estos tíos, que no escucharán nada más que el metal tradicional, puro, de la vieja escuela. Pero por otra parte, siempre habrá grupos/fans que cambiarán de estilo dependiendo de lo que hoy esté de moda… Y, por supuesto, siempre habrá gente que simplemente le guste escuchar buena música. Lo que normalmente pasa es que tan pronto como un grupo/género se convierte en un fenómeno, no lleva mucho tiempo el que vayan surgiendo “tropecientos” grupos similares. Y según pasa el tiempo, nuevos géneros irán y vendrán. Por lo pronto parece (al menos en Finlandia) que esta cosa del metal-core se está quedando obsoleta y ahora muchos de los grupos de hard rock/metal están surgiendo. Algunos lo conseguirán y se mantendrán en lo alto, en cambio otros desaparecerán. 
La mayor preocupación es, el futuro de la industria musical en general. Ya el formato en CD “morirá” algún día, ¿serán capaces, los servicios como Spotify, de pagar lo suficiente a pequeños grupos para poder cubrir los gastos de estudio en el futuro? Por el momento no parece muy prometedor.
M.S: Cambiando de tema, ¿qué es lo próximo en estos días?, ¿algún concierto o grabación aparte del festival?
Hemos estado haciendo pruebas. De hecho, ésta es la primera vez que queremos ir al estudio con todas las letras, arreglos y melodías hilvanados de antemano. Lleva tiempo ahora, pero haciéndolo podemos ahorrar tiempo, nervios y, por supuesto, dinero. Y estoy más que seguro de que este disco va a arrasar.
M.S: El MFVF reúne a grupos de diferentes países, ¿cuáles nos recomendaríais de vuestro país?
Embassy Of Silence es bastante sólido.

M.S: Hi, thanks a lot for taking a few minutes to answer to our questions. First of all, how are you?
Fine, thanks for asking. Just making new demos for the 3rd album and that keeps me/us busy.
M.S: As it is the first time we get to have an interview with you here at Metal Symphony, we’d like you to introduce yourselves to our readers talking a bit about where are you coming from, how was your band formed, what are your influences…
So… the band is called Crimfall and we come from Finland. We play movie score and Nordic folk influenced metal with 2 singers. Mikko is doing the screams and Helena does the clean parts. My name is Jakke (guitarist/composer/mastermind) and I found this band back in the 2007 as a “one man solo project”. But it became clear at the very beginning that I need some help with vocals and lyrics. So I asked Mikko (who writes almost all the lyrics for us) and Helena to help me with those. The first album (As The Path Unfolds…) was made with session musicians but as we wanted to be a “real” band with gigs and stuff, we asked Janne (Drums) and Miska (Bass) to join us. Janne was also playing on the album, but Miska replaced Trollhorn who played at the studio. Second album (The Writ Of Sword) was done with the current line up plus some quest stars from Turisas, Finntroll and Moonsorrow.
Our influences come from various sources. As mine is coming from soundtracks, it is the core of the whole Crimfall material. Mikko brings in the black metal sound, Helena some rock/pop/folk/whatever-we-need tunes and the boys… lord-knows-what in to our music. So when listening to Crimfall all these elements are present to create a huge variation of moods and contrasts… like Helena ones said “Crimfall has something for everyone not to like”.
M.S: For those who haven’t listened to your music yet, which songs would you strongly recommend for them to have an idea of your sound?
Silver And Bones. It has all these previously mentioned Crimfall elements under a one title.
M.S: Do you have any material available to purchase or download? If so, where can people go to get it or listen to it?
Yes, we have already released 2 albums. “As The Path Unfolds…” 2009 and “The Writ Of Sword” 2011. They both should be available in online shops around the world as well as in some digital channels as well.
M.S: After 11 years, what do you think the MFVF still has to offer to the audience?
If you are into this girly stuff, MFVF is maybe (?) the only festival where you can see so many femme-metal bands during one weekend that you need to listen to Manowar for the rest of the year to bring the balance back to the universe. 😉
M.S: And on your side, what will you offer to the people that will go there and see your performance?
We will bring our energic show not only for your ears but for your eyes (and neck) also.
M.S: Any favourites you intend to see on the fest when they are on stage?
It is finally a change for me to see Anneke live!
M.S: If a jam session could happen with any members of those participating in this MFVF’s edition’s line-up, who would be your chosen ones for? More than one name is possible 😉

M.S: Talking about other fests, you usually don’t get more than a couple of bands off the femme-metal genre, and normally, the chosen ones tend to be picked up from those who have been active for more than 10 years or so, bands like Epica, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil… What’s your opinion on this issue?
I don’t consider Crimfall as a femme-metal band, so I haven’t paid that much attention to this matter. Don’t get me wrong… We DO have female vocals in our songs, but it is like calling AC-DC as progressive metal since one of their song has a different chord. Anyways… back to your question… I think there are some expectations when a pair of boobs are on the stage. At least I have heard people saying “I don’t usually like female vocals, but I actually like Crimfall”.
MS: And going deeper into this topic, do you consider there’s still life for the genre? Is there more to explore beyond the "so well-know lyrical voices with metal music"? We know there are bands with gutural voices (even female ones), and others are trying mixing this music with other types like electronic and some others, but there’s still people who won’t look further from that first notion…
There will be always these guys, who wont listen to anything else than traditional, pure, old school metal. But in the other hand there will be always bands/fans that change their style/genre depending what is hot today… And off course there are people who just love to listen to a good music. What usually happens is that as soon as some band/genre becomes a huge phenomenon, it does not take long after there are gazillions of these similar bands. And as time goes by, new genres will come and go. It already seems (at least in Finland) that this metal-core-thing is getting out of fashion and now lots of -80’s hard rock/metal bands are popping up. Some of them will make on the top and stay there, some of them will vanish.
The bigger concern is the future of the whole music business in general. As CD format will die one day, will services like Spotify be able to pay enough for smaller bands to cover their studio expenses in the future?! It does not look very promising at the moment.
M.S: Changing topics, what are you up to these days? Any concert or recording apart from the fest?
We have been doing lot’s of demoing. This actually the first time we want to enter the studio with all the lyrics, arrangements and melodies nailed down beforehand. It takes a lot of time now, but by doing this we can save time, nerves and money eventually. And I’m pretty sure the album will kick more ass.
M.S: The MFVF gathers bands from very different countries together, which ones would you recommend from your own country?
Embassy of silence is pretty solid.
