Corey Taylor, Russel Allen, Jorn Lande, Floor Jansen… Todos son magníficos, hay tantos grandes vocalistas… ¡no me puedo decidir!

ENGLISH VERSION

Hello Ivo, thank you for your time. It’s a pleasure to have you here
Thank you for reaching out to us, we are more than happy to spend a couple of virtual minutes to talk about the project we have been living the past 2 years. 🙂

How was the Karmaflow project born? Who came up with the idea and how did you get to work to achieve it?

I came up with the idea in October of 2012. I wanted to explore how I could make an interactive Rock Opera. I pitched the idea to a couple of fellow students I knew from working with them on their projects. They studied Game & Interaction, and I studied Composition for Media, and was specialising in games. They were pretty excited about the idea, so I promised them I would take care of the music and business and organisational part of the whole project so they had the time needed to make the game.

Was it you who chose the characters? Based on what did you choose them?

Well, I wrote the stories together with the designers from the team, so from that came the characters in general. Sometimes we already had an idea for which singer we wanted to ask, and made a character based on that singer. Eventually the name of the characters came from me, and they were drawn up by our character artists, taking into consideration what the world we described in the story would look like.

Obviously the important part of a video game is to play. What role does the OST play in the game? Will there be any videoclip from any of the songs? That would be amazing

The music tells the complete narative of the game, so the whole story is brought to you in song and music. Basically, the end of each world in Karmaflow (there are 5 in total) is a videoclip in its’ own, and I already have seen people posting these parts to youtube. So yeah, there are already videoclips available, you just have to play the game. 😉

Tell us what the game is about and where it can be purchased

The game is about the Karmakeeper, the player’s character, who has to travel to different world to find the guardians in these world. Each world has its own story and its own characters. You must hear out the different characters in the world, learn of their conflict, and decide who you want to help by either infusing or extracting the different characters their Karma. Eventually you will learn what the connection is between these worlds in the climax of the game!
The game is available through Steam now: http://store.steampowered.com/app/317940/
If you purchase the game, you will get the downloadable soundtrack for free as well.

You did some concerts for the 1st act of the game. How did they go? Could all the guests attend? Will you do the same for the 2nd?

Yes we did 2 shows with an alternate cast and the full orchestra. These were two amazing nights, and we sold out both shows! As you can imagine, with 14 singers it is incredibly hard to plan so everyone could attend, and a lot of the singers involved just released a new album in that periode (Epica, Sonata Arctica, Delain, Arch Enemy… Everyone was on tour!!) so we decided to arrange an alternate cast. The singers did an amazing job nonetheless, and we had amazing costumes and visuals from the game to make everything come together.

Apart from this release, what else can be expected from Karmaflow? Tour? Festivals? More acts?

Hopefully we will be able to do more shows, festivals maybe… We are also planning on bringing the game to the consoles in the near future, that will probably take up a big chunck of our time as well. And we have been whispering about a second album with all the tracks that are not yet on the album! There’s a ton load of music in the game, so it kinda makes sense….

For those who are not in deep knowledge of your project, what would you say to avoid them thinking it is just one more opera rock?

Karmaflow started out as an experiment with interactive musical narrative… So basically an interactive Rock Opera in the form of a videogame! There are a lot of different aspects to the project: A game, an album, an interactive live rock opera complete with costumes and visuals…

On top of that I think the fact that we used one of the best orchestra’s in the world to record the soundtrack, is worth mentioning if you are more into the symphonic side of these kind of opera’s. And we have some special guests which haven’t really been around in other Rock Opera’s (Dani Filth, Tony Kakko etc…)

To finish, who would be your dream guest?

Aw that’s a thoughy… Corey Taylor, Russel Allen, Jorn Lande, Floor Jansen…All are great, so many great singers out there, can’t… make… a…. decision!!

Thank you for your time, these were all of our questions… now it is the time if you want to add anything else. Good luck with Karmaflow!

Thank you very much for taking the time to write about Karmaflow! And hopefully people will support our project and make it able for us to continue making these kind of projects in the future.
Thanks for your time and take care!
