Es un honor que pase por nuestra redacción una de las guitarristas con más prestigio internacional a día de hoy…. Nada más acabar el tercer Experience Hendrix Tour, Ana Popovic nos dedica un poco de su tiempo para hablar de tan magno homenaje que hacen a una de las figuras de la historia como es Jimi Hendrix gente como Zakk Wylde, Dweezil Zappa, Billy Cox, Eric Johnson entre otros… Además en poco más de un mes saca su nuevo disco "Trilogy", un disco triple demostrando su gran estado de forma… todo eso y mucho más es lo que nos cuenta |

M.S: Hola Ana, es un placer tenerte en nuestra página, que tal estás?
Estoy muy bien. De vuelta del Hendrix Experience Tour, una gira por Francia con mi banda y preparada para el lanzamiento de “Trilogy” en Mayo.
M.S: Acabas de hacer por segundo año el “Experience Hendrix Tour” con un montón de guitarristas como Billy Cox, Eric Johnson, Zakk Wylde, Dweezil Zappa, entre otros… como ha ido este año?En que aforos tocabais? Que respuesta ha tenido la gente?
Fue fantástico volver por tercera vez. Es un honor compartir escenario con unos guitarristas tan increibles como esos. Me siento como en casa en ese tour. La música fluye, la banda toca bien, las canciones suenan bien de la primera a la última y tanto el equipo como los músicos hicieron todo lo posible para que estuvieramos relajados tanto fuera como dentro del escenario. Es increíble que de tantos guitarristas de los que se espera cierta arrogancia –ninguno de estos– todo el mundo toca con los pies en la tierra y es respetuoso con el estilo de tocar de sus compañeros. Yo –la única mujer en la gira– tuve el trato y apoyo más amable que nunca hubiera imaginado.
El aforo de los recintos es de 5 a 8000, el Chicago Theatre estuvo llenísimo, y el Detroit Theatre también. Todos los recintos sonaron muy bien. El público respondió de una forma fantástica, tenías desde a los fans metaleros de Zakk sentados al lado de los bluesy’s de Buddy, junto a los amantes de la fusión que vienen a ver a Eric.. No es un público fácil de satisfacer… pero todo fue muy bien!
M.S: Para quienes no hemos podido asistir, cual era la estructura de los conciertos? Temas individuales y uno final conjunto? Nos podrías decir algún tema del setlist y el momento más emotivo según tu opinión…
Bien, Billy Cox abría, Dweezil se unía, luego iba yo, luego Eric, luego Zakk, y así con todos. Es un show muy enérgico que no te permite relajarte o ver tu Facebook. Cada segundo está fragmentado y lleno de enorme energía. Es un show fantástico para ver una y otra vez.
Creo que es realmente emocionante la mezcla de imágenes de Jimi con su familia cuando era un niño en la pantalla gigante, detrás de los músicos junto a otros momentos geniales de Jimi en el escenario… Un montón de grandes momentos.
M.S: Respecto a ti, que te ha aportado volver hacer una gira como esta recordando la figura de Jimi, que temas tocabas tu?…. Que te ha supuesto estar entre tantos número 1 de la música? Te llevas algún consejo o experiencia con alguno de tus compañeros?
Fue una gran prueba para mí misma. Primero, vuelves a encontrarte con tus recuerdos de juventud -He escuchado a Jimi cuando era una niña, de adolescente y aún lo escucho ahora– su música y su forma de tocar aún me resultan muy poderosas hoy en día. Nadie toca como él. Sus solos aún suenan igual de potentes, frescos e innovadores… es eterno. Además, puedes ver cuantas opciones hay para interpretar su música –y puedes ver como lo hacen algunos masters de la guitarra, con corazón y alma. Creo que sería algo muy interesante que todos nosotros, los guitarristas, intentásemos tocar la música de Jimi– porque después de 50 años te das cuenta que nadie es capaz de acercarse a su estilo. Al mismo tiempo, su música inspira a la gente y está hecha para abrir nuevas direcciones. Eso es lo bonito de la música de Jimi. Yo estuve tocando House Burning Down y mi versión de slide del Can You See Me –el único tema con slide que se interpretaba en la gira-.
M.S: Como era un día normal en el tour? Alguna anécdota que se pueda explicar? Quizá con el grandullón de Zakk Wylde, hehe…
Bueno, Zakk me dio la bienvenida al autobús con una de sus historias de carretera más sucias -y Chris Layton simplemente dijo: ‘Bienvenida, Ana!..”- Un montón de grandes historias al fin y al cabo de Chris sobre Stevie y Johnny Lang además de las historias metaleras de carretera de Zakk. Lo que muy probablemente no sepa la gente, es que Zakk es el rey haciendo el té de antes de irse a dormir –lo hacía habitualmente para todos nosotros después de los conciertos-.
M.S: Quizá sea muy dificil contestar pero, con que disco de Jimi Hendrix te quedas y porque….
Si tengo que escoger uno sería Axis: Bold As Love
M.S: Hablando ya de tu música…. Que escuchas actualmente? A nivel de bandas, hay muchas bandas que se han lanzado por el rock/blues “vintage”, psicodélico o como quieras llamarlo… Y quieras o no hay algunos que tenéis la culpa, como Bonamassa, o tu, jeje… que por eso eres “The Queen of blues”, o no te ves así? A finales de año estuvo en España Joanne Shaw Taylor, que también apunta maneras, no se si la conoces….
Mucha gente se ha inspirado por el blues. El blues siempre estará ahí y siempre inspirará. Hay un sinfín de posibilidades dentro de un género musical bastante limitado. Eso es lo bueno de la música blues.
M.S: Hablando un poco de tu equipo, que nos puedes decir sobre él? Siempre usas Fender? No eres partidaria de Gibson?
Uso Fender Super Reverb 1965 original, tengo un Fender Bassman, y un Mesa boogie-Mark 4. Me gusta mucho conectarlos tanto en el estudio como en vivo.
De guitarras tengo una Strato del 64, una reedición del 57, varias telecasters y customizadas. Para Trilogy utilicé una Gibson ES175 por primera vez en las partes de jazz.
M.S: En unos meses sacas “Trilogy”, que nos puedes decir al respecto?Viene después de “Blue Room” con tu padre, aunque imaginamos que seguirá el estilo de “Can you stand the heat”, no? Explícanos hacia donde va ese nuevo disco y que dicen esos nuevos temas…
3 CDs en uno! Uno de funk/soul llamado: Vol 1- La Mañana, un CD blues/rock llamado: Vol 2 – Mediodía y un CD de Jazz: Vol 3- Medianoche. Ana Popovic en 3 sonidos completamente diferentes para tres momentos de todo un día. Es algo que nunca pude lograr en el pasado… sonidos y estilos completamente diferentes – guitarras, voz, composición, banda… con leyendas como Bernard Purdie, Herlin Riley, George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, con músicos increíbles como Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph, Delfeayo Marsalis… etc… Estoy muy feliz de que por fin salga – me tomó un año completo grabarlo en 3 sesiones diferentes con músicos increíbles desde Nueva York, Memphis, New Orleans, Nashville…
M.S: Suponemos que después vendrá la gira de presentación, y vemos que nunca has tenido problema en ir saltando de continentes y no hacer una gira por tramos… menos en España y Londres has tocado en muchos sitios hahaha… es muy diferente el público americano que el europeo? Que sensaciones te llegan de cada uno?
Me encanta tocar en ambos lados del océano. Me gustaría volver a España, tocamos en España hace mucho tiempo. Así que me gustaría volver.
Cada país tiene diferentes vibraciones y diferentes públicos, me gusta la mezcla de esos continentes y países. Este año haremos por primera vez Australia. Hemos estado en Brasil, Japón, Indonesia, India… es increíble el hecho de que tanta gente de sitios tan lejanos se sepan tu música.
M.S: Por último y por curiosidad… si no fueras guitarrista, serías…
Probablemente sería artista, estudié artes plásticas y diseño gráfico en el pasado. Me encantaría tener una galería de arte.

M.S: Hello Ana, it is a pleasure for us to have you. How are you doing?
I am doing great. Back home after the EH tour and a french tour with my band and getting ready for the release of Trilogy in May.
M.S: You just did, e second time, the “Hendrix Experiene Tour” with a bunch of guitar players like Billy Cox, Eric Johnson, Zakk Wylde, Dweezil Zappa… How was it this year? What was the capacitry of the venues you played? What has been the response of the audiences?
It was fantastic to be back, for the 3rd time. It’s an honour to share stage with such incredible guitar players. I feel right at home on that tour. Music wise -we picked it up right where we left it 2 years ago – band played great, songs were sounding great from the first sec. on. Steady crew and musicians make for a relaxed feel on and off stage. It’s amazing to see that with so many different guitar players you’d expect some arrogancy – none of that – everyone’s really down to earth and real kind and respectful of each other’s style of playing. Me – being the only lady on tour – I have had only the kindest support I could imagine.
The capacity of the venues is 5 – 8000, Chicago Theatre was absolute topper, Detroit Theatre as well. Al the places sounded really great.
Audience responded fantastic – after all you have the metal fans of Zakk sitting next to the blues fans of Buddy, and then all the fusion guys coming to see Eric.. So it’s not an easy audience to please you would think.. but it all went great!
M.S: For those of us who could not make it to the shows, what was the structure in them? Individual songs and a final jam all together? Could you share some of the songs on the setlist and the most emotional moments in your opinion?
Well, Billy Cox would open , Dweezil would join, I would follow, then Eric, then Zakk..and so on. It’s a high energy show that doesn’t allow you to relax or check your Facebook page. Every second is so filled with shredding and energy lever is really high. Fantastic show to sit and watch over and over again.
I guess really powerful is always the mix of the images of Jimi when he was a kid, with his family, on the big screen, behind the players, mixed with all the fantastic different takes of Jimi’s songs onstage. Those are really powerful moments.
M.S: Regarding yourself, what did doing this tour remembering Jimi’s figure bring you? What songs did you play? What did it mean for you being surrounded by so many big figures in music? Do they ever give you advice from their vast experience on the road?
It’s a huge evaluation tour for me. First, you touch base with your younger self – I’ve listened to Jimi when I was a kid, a teenager and to me – his music and his playing is still equally powerful today. No one plays like him. His solos still sound equally powerful, fresh and innovative. Timeless. And then you see how many options there are for interpreting his music – and you see it done by some masters of guitar playing, and they do it with their heart and soul. I think it’s a clever and interesting thing to have all of us try to play Jimi’s music – because you see that even 50 years later no one can come even close to Jimi. At the same time, his music is made to inspire people. It’s made to open new directions and his music still does. That’s a beautiful thing about Jimi. M.S: How was a normal day on the tour? Some anecdotes you could share with us? Maybe one with big Zakk?
Well, Zakk welcomed me back on the bus with one of his over-the-top dirty stories – and Chris Layton simply said: ‘Welcome, Ana!..” Lot’s of great stories overall from Chris about Stevie’s time, and Johnny Lang and of course we got the fair share of the metal road stories from Zakk. What most people probably don’t know is that Zakk is a king of making sleepy time tea to all of us on the bus – so that’s what he was doing regularly after the shows.
M.S: It may be a tough question to answer, but what Jimi Hendrix album would you choose and why?
If I really have to choose it’s Axis: Bold As Love
M.S: Let’s switch to your music. What are you listening to lately? There are many bands who have taken a turn to ‘vintage blues rock’ or whatever the label is… And probably some of you are to blame for it, like Joe Bonamassa or yourself hehe that’s they call you “The Queen of Blues” or maybe you don’t see yourself that way? Joanne Shaw Taylor was in Spain last year also, and she also shows some signs of going in that direction. Do you know her?
Lot’s of people are inspired by blues music. blues will always be there and will always inspire. There are endless possibilities in a fairly limited music genre. That’s the nice thing about blues music.
M.S: Let’s talk some gear. What can you tell us about your rig? Do you always use Fender? How do you feel about Gibsons, for instance?
I use Fender Super Reverb 1965 original, I have a Fender Bassman, and a Mesa boogie-Mark 4 . Love to connect them – all 3 of them in the studio and live.
Guitars: I have a original 1964 Strat. reissue 1957 Strat, a couple of tele’s and custom shops. On Trilogy I was using a Gibson ES175 for the first time on the jazz part.
M.S: In some months you will be releasing “Trilogy”. What can you tell us about it? What is the direction of the new record and what will the new songs tell us after “Blue Room”, which you did with your father?
3 CD’s in one! A funk/soul CD – called Vol 1- Morning, a Blues/rock cd called Vol 2 – Midday and a Jazz cd – Vol 3-Midnight. Ana Popovic in 3 completely different sounds for the whole day of music. It’s something I’ve never even come close to achieve in the past. # completely different sounds – guitar/vocals/songwritting/ band.. featuring legends like Bernard Purdie, Herlin Riley, George Porter Jr, Ivan Neville, featuring incredible players like Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph, Delfeayo Marsalis.. etc.. I’m just so happy it’s coming out – it took me a full year to record it in 3 different sessions with incredible musicians. From New York/Memphis/New Orleans /Nashville.
M.S: We suppose that after the release there will be a tour and we see that you have never had any problems in jumping from continent to continent, maybe avoiding straight tour legs. Except for London and Spain, you have played in many places. Are American audiences different from the ones in Europe? What are the feelings you get from each?
I love playing both sides of the ocean. I’d love to be back in Spain, we played Spain quite a bit in the past, but certainly not recently. So I’d love to be back.
Every country has a different vibe and different audiences, I love the mix of all these continents and countries. This year we’ll be doing Australia for the first time. Been to Brazil, Japan, Indonesia, India.. just amazing to see how many audience knows our music in those far away destinations.
M.S: Just curious, what would you be doing if you were not playing guitar?
I would probably be an artist, I’ve studied fine arts and graphic design in the past. I’d love to have an art gallery.
