Star One,
Guilt Machine y
The Gentle Storm:

ENGLISH VERSION

Hello Arjen, it is a pleasure for us that you can respond to our questions. How do you feel at this moment?

== Totally happy, the reactions on the album are simply amazing so far and the pre-sales of the album are my best ever!

You have just released your new record “The Source” that tells us a futuristic story. What can you say us about it?

== The title refers to the source of mankind. It could very well be that our DNA reached the Earth on a comet from another planet. So… where do we come from?

How would you define the record from a musical perspective?

== It’s a guitar oriented album, and therefore a bit heavier than my previous album The Theory of Everything which was more proggy and keyboard-oriented. It’s also more structured, more catchy (I hope!) choruses and I think more accessible.

As in earlier albums, great musicians and singers collaborate with you, how was the recording process?

== This time I got the best singers and musicians in the world, it’s my dream cast and I’m truly honored to be able to work with them!

The releases of Ayreon have always been with special editions, very interesting for your fans, such as fantastic front pages, dvds of the making off, etc. With regards to the new album, what brings us “The Source”?

== I personally think that this is the most beautiful Ayreon package ever. The Earbook is the most special version, it has 4 CDs (two instrumental), a DVD (with the video clips, behind the scenes, interviews and a 5.1 mix) and 40+ pages of amazing artwork. Besides that there is a great double LP vinyl version as well, and a mediabook with two CDs and DVD.

We knew that the album will be presented in three exclusive shows with all tickets already sold out. I understand that the content is top secret, but we would like to know if there is any possibility of more shows? And have you thought of recording them for a future release in DVD?What do you expect about this experience?

== The event is called The Ayreon Universe. The setlist will not be limited to The Source, it will be a best of Ayreon. We will play a minimum of two tracks of each album. This will be a once in a lifetime experience, there are no plans for more shows. Of course we will film it for a beautiful DVD/Bluray, to be released in 2018!

You are not a person who is very fond of touring, as we have seen in your trajectory. Have you ever thought of a long tour visiting more countries with a group of singers and musicians as Tobias Sammet does with Avantasia?

== No, I will never tour. I am a complete recluse and I don’t travel. I see myself as a composer/producer, not as a performer. I don’t like touring at all! I prefer just to stay at home and be creative.

Since the release in 1995 of your Rock Opera “Ayreon, The Final Experiment”, which already surprised me 22 years ago, this project has always maintained the same style, while changing actors and musicians. This would mean that you have always controlled all of them meticulously, managing the team in the way as you understood the end product. Do you perceive an evolution of Ayreon from the first album to today?

== Yes, definitely. All albums are quite different from each other. Basically each album I do is a reaction and a contrast to the album before that. I like to keep things fresh for myself, but also for the fans.

I would like to review all your projects and ask you in which state they are, if they have been finished totally or if they could be reactivated?
Star One,
Guilt Machine and
The Gentle Storm..

== I never plan ahead, so anything is possible! It really depends on what ideas come to me. It’s a natural process, I can’t force it.

For all your projects, you could always count with huge stars, all very special. Without disrespecting any of them, could you mention some musicians/singers with whom you were thrilled to work with, and those who have really surprised you?

== If I would do that, I would automatically disrespect others whom I didn’t mention! So no, I won’t choose. All I can say is that I’m a total perfectionist, so I really only use the material that I’m a 100% proud of.

With so many musicians, I guess that you have lived a lot of funny situations. Do you remember any that you could share with us?

== Not really, I’m such a boring person! I basically only work with a singer for two days, and then we’re very focused on getting a good result. I’m afraid I’m not a very social person, I always like to get straight to work and I don’t like to take breaks! Yeah, I’m terrible 🙂

In your projects, normally conceptual, the singers you work with, are at the same time actors, as all have to play a role. As the writer, who has impressed you most when acting, as doing it exactly as you had imagined?

== As I said before… all of them. No exceptions. If they wouldn’t have impressed me, I wouldn’t have used it. And believe me, that has happened several times!

As we could see and listen through what has been published in audio and video from “The Human Equation”, it was a huge happening. What is your conclusion after the achievement of putting it on stage?

== All musicians did an amazing job in the Theater Equation! Especially the singers, because they had no acting experience whatsoever. It was really heart-warming for me to see my story come alive. And especially to see how emotionally the people reacted. This was the catalyst to organize the Ayreon Universe shows in September.

After the promotion of “The Source” and the shows you are preparing, what future plans do you have?

== When the shows are done, I will be working on the DVD and the audio. I guess that will take at least 3 to 4 months. As I said earlier, I never plan ahead creatively. So anything could happen! I hope inspiration will come soon, it will have to come naturally… can’t force it, unfortunately.

Arjen, thanks a lot for your time and your music, it has been a real pleasure knowing your answers. If you would like to say something to our readers and all your fans, than this would be the moment.

== My pleasure, thanks for your interest in The Source! I hope everyone will enjoy it, please let me know and thanks so much all of you for your loyal support through the years!
