Hola Eric, es un placer tenerte por aquí, ¿cómo estás?

Quizás este 2017 es un gran año para tí, de gira con NMB, Mike Portnoy Shatered Fortress, Morsefest…. ¿Piensas que es más intenso que años anteriores? Creo que ni siquiera te acuerdas cuántos conciertos has dado…
Sí, 2017 está siendo un año increíble y todavía no ha terminado. Ha sido definitivamente uno de los años más intensos para mí. Y debería consultar mi listado de fechas de conciertos para saber cuántos shows he dado este año!
En términos técnicos, ¿cuál es la canción más difícil que has tocado este año?
Probablemente “The Dance of Eternity”. Es una canción muy exigente, pero también es muy divertido para tocar.
Te descubrimos cuando tocabas en España con Adson Sodré en la gira “Momentum Tour” con The Neal Morse Band. ¿Tienes alguna idea dónde él está ahora?
Creo que está tocando en una banda de covers en Brasil o algo. No estoy muy seguro.
¿Cómo te sientes siendo el guitarrista principal de The Neal Morse Band? ¿Echas en falta un segundo guitarrista en este grupo?
Creo que hay una idea erróneo que The Neal Morse Band era una banda con 6 miembros cuando empezamos a colaborar, escribir y grabar juntos. No fue el caso. Fuimos básicamente mano de obra para tocar la música de Neal. Fue genial! También teníamos un batería estupendo (Jason Gianni) para sustituir a Mike si no podía tocar. Pero NMB fue formada después de esto. Decidimos todos que querríamos ser una banda verdadera y escribir, grabar y girar con un disco. Eso empezó con The Grand Experiment. Realmente amo tocar en este grupo con estos tios. Son todos músicos y personas geniales.
¿Cómo se puso Neal en contacto contigo antes de estar en su banda? Suponemos que fue como un sueño que se hizo real irte de gira con él, ¿cierto?
Bueno, Neal estaba buscando un grupo para tocar su álbum solitario. Por lo cual, organizó audiciones en YouTube. Después seleccionó unos cuantos para ir a Nashville para una audición real. ¡Fue una experiencia increíble!
En NMB vemos que Bill y tú tocáis varios instrumentos. ¿Es muy difícil de tocar todas disciplinas musicales cuando vas de gira con grandes artistas como Neal Morse o Mike Portnoy´s band? Vemos que en la gira “Road Home Tour” toda la banda canta y toca instrumentos. ¿Es complicado hacer más de una cosa a un nivel tan alto?
Cuando tocas más instrumentos y cantas, pienso que exige un poco más de concentración que hacer solamente una cosa. Y el hecho realmente fantástico de este grupo es que todo el mundo toca varios instrumentos y además muy bien!
Pero Neal tiene más responsabilidad, gasta más energía, hace más pápeles. ¿Cómo le ves a sus 57 años? Pensamos que es la gira más importante, potente, completa y complejo que has hecho, ¿no?
Ciertamente ha sido una gira muy poderosa. Creo que es un álbum potente y todos intentamos de darlo vida en el escenario y presentarlo para que la gente lo disfruta. Neal es un artista increíble y es un gran estímulo compartir el escenario con él.
Mike Portnoy ha dicho que “The Similitude of a Dream” es uno de los mejores trabajos en el que ha participado en su carrera musical. ¿Compartes esta opinión?
Estoy completamente de acuerdo! Es un álbum muy especial para todos nosotros y estamos muy orgullosos de haberlo hecho juntos.
Quizás Mike es un compañero de banda de verdad y tienes una conexión extraordinaria con él porque te ha pedido tocar en MP “Shattered Fortress”, ¿otro sueño que se hizo realidad? ¿Cómo viviste esa experiencia?
Desde luego, otro sueño que se hizo realidad. Crecí escuchando a Dream Theater y fui un gran fan. Por lo cual, cuando Mike me lo pidió no tuve ni pensarlo, fue un “Sí” instantáneo. Seguido por la realización de todo lo que tenía que tocar… han sido la mayor cantidad de notas que he tenido que aprender en mi vida. Me da que no queda ninguna sin tocar, las tocamos todas, haha!
Nos enamoramos de los álbumes “?” y “Sola Scriptura”. ¿Has tenido problemas en aprender el resto de las canciones de estos discos en el último Morsefest? Creemos que son discos muy complicados, ¿verdad?
Hay partes muy complicadas en estos álbumes. En especial los solos de Paul Gilbert. Pero me gusta mucho aprender lo que otros guitarristas han creado. Me da una nueva visión de la guitarra. Siempre aprendo nuevos trucos o técnicas y eso siempre es bueno.
Hace unos meses publicaste “The Great Unknown”. ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre ello? ¿Es similar a lo que haces con Morse ahora?
Fue hace poco más de un año que publiqué “The Great Unknown”. Es mucho más pesado que lo que hacemos en The Neal Morse Band. Va un poco más hacia el Metal Progresiva a veces. Toca Thomas Lang la batería, Conner Green (Haken) el bajo y Diego Tejeida (Haken) el teclado. Estos hombres son geniales y han dado otra dimensión a la música. También mezclé el álbum que es algo que me gusta mucho y Rich Mouser hizo un gran trabajo masterizando todo en su Mouse House Studio. Estoy muy contento con el resultado final. Creo que me representa como artista solitario.
Vemos en tu página web que da clases y que trabajas de músico en sesiones, ¿estás dedicado a tiempo completo a la música?
Sí. Soy muy afortunado de poder tocar música a tiempo completo, especialmente en estos días. Cuando estoy en casa después de las giras y si no paso el tiempo con mi hermosa mujer, entonces estoy en el estudio trabajando en algo. No tengo falta de proyectos y estoy muy agradecido por ello.
¿Tienes planes para tu futuro? ¿Qué esperas después de las giras de Morsefest y Mike por América del Sur y Australia?
El resto del año está realmente ocupado. Tengo otra gira en los EEUU y Moresefest con NMB, y algunas fechas con Shattered Fortress para el resto del año. No estoy seguro sobre lo que trae el próximo año, pero estoy planificando comenzar la escritura de otro álbum en solitario una vez en casa y teniendo tiempo para dedicar a ello. Y espero más conciertos de The Neal Morse Band si los calendarios de todos lo permiten. Lo veremos!

Hi Eric, it’s a pleasure to have you here, how are you?
I am great! Staying very busy!
Maybe this 2017 it’s a great year for you, tour with NMB, Mike Portnoy Shatered Fortress, Morsefest… Do you think it’s more intense than the years before? I think that you might not even know how many concerts you played haha….
Yeah, 2017 has been an incredible year so far, and it’s not over yet! It has definitely been one of the most intense years for me. I would definitely have to look at my master tour dates list to know how many shows I’ve played this year!
Technically, what is the most difficult song that you played this year?
Probably The Dance of Eternity. It’s a very demanding song but also a ton of fun to play.
We discovered you when you were playing in Spain with Adson Sodré in the “Momentum tour” with The Neal Morse Band. Do you have any idea where he is now?
I think he is playing in a cover band in Brazil or something. I’m not really sure.
How does it feel to be the lead guitarist of The Neal Morse band? Do you miss a second guitarist in the NMB?
I think there is a common misconception that The Neal Morse Band was a 6 piece when we formed the band and began collaborating, writing and recording together. But that’s not the case. We were basically hired guns to play Neal’s solo music. It was great! We also had a great drummer (Jason Gianni) to fill in when Mike couldn’t make it. But NMB was formed after that. We all decided we wanted to be a true band, and write, record, and tour an album. That all started with The Grand Experiment. I love playing in this band with these guys. They are all amazing musicians and equally as amazing people.
How did Neal contact you to enter the band? A dream became real, we guess, to tour with a classic like himself, isn’t it?
Well, Neal was looking for a band to play his solo music. So he held open auditions on YouTube. Then they selected a handful to come to Nashville for a real audition. It was a really awesome experience!
In NMB we see that Bill and you are multi-instrumentalists… Is it very hard to play all music disciplines while touring with top artist like Neal Morse or Mike Portnoy’s band? We see in the “Road Called Home tour” that all the band is singing and playing instruments… Is it difficult doing more than one thing all nights at a high level?
When you are playing more instruments and singing I think it just requires a little more focus than just doing one thing. And the really cool thing about this band is that everyone can play multiple instruments and play them well!
But Neal has more responsibility, wastes more energy, is doing more characters… How do you see him with 57 years old… We think that it’s the most important, powerful, complete and complex tour that you did…isn’t it?
It has definitely been a powerful tour! I think it’s a powerful album, and we are all just trying to bring it to life on the stage and present it in a way that people will enjoy. Neal is an amazing performer and it’s a blast to share the stage with him!
Mike Portnoy has commented that “The similitude of a dream” is one of the best jobs he has been taking part in his carrier. Is this the same for you?
I would definitely agree! It is a very special album to all of us and we are all very proud of what we made together.
Maybe Mike is a real bandmate and you have a really good connection with him because he asked you if you wanted to play in MP Shattered Fortress, another dream that became real? How did you live this experience?
Of course! Definitely a dream come true. I grew up listening to Dream Theater and being a big fan. So when Mike asked me, I didn’t even think about it. It was an instant YES! Followed by the realization of everything I would have to play… It’s the most notes I’ve ever had to learn! I’m not sure there are any notes left. I think we played them all. Haha!
We fell in love with “?” and “Sola Scriptura” albums… have you had any problems to learn the rest of songs from these albums in the last Morsefest? We think that’s an extremely difficult albums… right?
There are definitely difficult parts in those albums. Particularly some of the Paul Gilbert solos. But I love learning other guitar players’ parts. It gives me a new outlook on the guitar. I always learn new tricks or techniques and that is always a good thing.
A few months ago you released “The great unknown”… What can you tell us about it? Is it similar to what you are doing with Morse now?
It’s been a little over a year now since I released “The Great Unknown”. It is a lot heavier than the stuff we do in the Neal Morse Band. It tends to lean a little more to the Progressive Metal side at times. It features Thomas Lang on drums, Conner Green (Haken) on Bass, and Diego Tejeida (Haken) on keys. Those guys are amazing and brought another dimension to the music. I also mixed the album which I also enjoy doing very much, and Rich Mouser did a great job mastering it at his Mouse House Studio. I am really happy with how the album turned out. I think it represents me well as a solo artist.
We see in you web page you give classes and you are a session musician, are you now dedicated to music full-time?
Yes. I am very fortunate to get to play music full-time, especially these days. When I am home from touring, if I am not spending time with my beautiful wife, then I am in my studio working on something. There’s no shortage of projects and I am grateful for that!
Do you have any plans about your future? What do you expect after Morsefest and Mike tour through South America and Australia…
The rest of the year is really busy! I have another US tour and Morsefest with NMB, then some Shattered Fortress dates through the rest of the year. I’m not sure yet what the next year holds, but I am planning on starting the writing process for a new solo album once I am home and have time to devote to it. And hopefully more from The Neal Morse Band if everyone’s schedules permit. We will see!
