Hola !!! Soy Faith, cantante de The Shiver. ¡Estamos bien!

Bueno, me siento tan vieja, hahaha!

Me siento agradecida.

ENGLISH VERSION

M.S: Greetings from Spain. How are you? Can you tell us how you met and started the band and how the name came up?

Ciao!!! This is Faith, singer of The Shiver. We’re fine!

I met Finch in 2006. I was running a rock band and i needed a good drummer. After few weeks we were tuned on the same idea: try to bring the project to a higher level. So we started to think professionally, working very hard on every side of The Shiver, music and live gigs most of all. We changed many guitar players and bass players until we found Morris and Matteo (actual members since 2 years).

About the name, we wanted something simple, that could express the meaning of our music: only a strong emotion can give you shivers down the spine, and that’s what we want the audience to feel.

M.S: You are 10 years with your band… How do you see the industry with four releases and many shows played?

Well, I feel so old ahahah! We’ve been touring around and we’ve been involved in the underground part of music business for all this time. We’ve been playing, managing our band, working in the business, helping out friends, touring as sessionists, playing in high level stages, sleeping in 5 stars hotels, and playing in small diy gigs, sleeping in the van… We’ve touched the mainstream many times and I can say that it’s really not what I want. Everything is sick there.

In the last decade things changed faster and faster, through internet, but also through the audience taste. The projects who survived this moment (in the underground) are few, and basically all of them are very good bands, who’ve been so smart to apply lots of energy to the diy philosophy. Lots of bands who tried to get in the major scene have been trying so hard and in the end they quit, destroyed compromises they had to make in their music and ambition (not the positive kind of ambition…). The first decade of the XXI century has been marked by the birth of many low-profile music agencies in all Europe, who at first seemed like an easy way to arrive to the top, but then turned out to be just cash machines for dishonest people. After 2010 these agencies started to close down… and things seems to be better… more collaborations between artists, more events after a very long time of stop. I feel confident in what we are able to do, and positive for the future.

M.S: In a personal way, all of this is changed your life? Do you have the same routine that 10 years ago? Same work maybe….

Of course music changed my life totally, and that’s why I feel so lucky and grateful to have this thing inside. After high school I knew that I could have never wanted a common life, I am so scared about it, doing the same thing everyday, being the same then other people, living in a system that others chose for me;a nd I knew that I needed to satisfy my music attitude.

At first I had to work so hard in every way I could for gain money, then I started to teach in a few music schools, and then 4 years ago I opened a music centre in my city, with my drummer Finch. Our “Backstage Academy” is hard to handle, but it gives us a lot of satisfation. Young musicians from our city needed a place like this, and we’re very happy. In the next months we’ll open another Academy in Cordoba and one in Barcelona btw…
At the same time, the experience of life we had, opened our mind, making us really different from people of our same age. Travelling the world, meeting new friends everywhere, solving problems at anytime, playing in front of a big audience, in any condition… This all made me and my mates grow so fast. Music asks for all your energy and heart, but then you got a higher purpose in your life.

M.S: The Shiver releases was self-edited, is the better way nowadays to release one album? How do you manage all sells process?

Well, I can’t tell if it’s the best way. I think it’s the best for us right now. The first 2 albums have been released through labels, who gave us a little more exposure, but I truly believe that the only way to make it is to play live so much, and play very well. I’ve always taken care about this part since the last 2 years, when I put my trust in K2, our management, that helped us out a lot to grow bigger. So… right now I think we have a great team working on the project. A label is not needed, unless they really want to promote you investing money and giving you more exposure – this is nont always happening. A good strategy is selling your music on websites like Bandcamp, easy and effective.

M.S: The album has been released few months ago. Do you have any feedback of how the album is doing?

As we chose to distribute it online, I know that it’s going good, for a self-produced act like us. If you have the same music background as me (gothic metal, dark wave, alternative metal, ‘90s stuff – or I could say, for fans of APC, NIN, Katatonia, Anathema, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence…) you will love it so much. I don’t mind to spread my music to everyone, my music is placed in a small hollow… But I’m so happy that so many people appreciate my creatures! I feel grateful. Nothing is easy in life, there are always things that hold you down, but despite everyting, we keep going up!

M.S: The writing process and the lyrics come from your minds. Can you tell how you worked and organized yourselves?

For The Shiver I’ve always felt the need to do all by myself to express perfectly my ideas. Usually I record tons of stuff on my mobile, and when I feel that the time has come, I open the DEMO folder on my laptop and I select the best ideas. Music comes first. Then I start creating a full track, with a melody, with all instruments, and at the same time my mind starts creating an image about that song, and I go with the lyrics. This is the part that I prefer, when you feel like a fire burning inside and you can’t wait to finish your track as the music comes out.

While producing the track, my bandmates help me out with their skills on instruments, and for every Album we chose a producer who helped us out in studio.

M.S: Whats is the difference between this Adeline and the previous one?

While The Darkest Hour had a lot of post-rock influences, Adeline is straight and simple, alternative metal and rock. We had some reasons to record TDH fully digital, while this time we used lots of valve distortions, warm sounds, analog instruments, no compromise on that.

About the concept, TDH talked about society and how hard was our time, while Adeline is a collection of tales and legends that totally gets your mind out of the brutal reality. In my idea, music is always cathartic, but in this critical time of our society, the best way to make people feel better is bring them far from here.

M.S: You toured with Tarja and Sonic Syndicate through Europe (and Spain too). What did you remember about these tours? And audience?. Did you see yourselves touring as a way of life? Any anecdote you can share?

Yes, we had the chance to play in great venues with Tarja Turunen last November and then we’ve hit Spain again in April and May 2017. But we toured over there so many times in the past that we can now consider your beautiful country as a second home.

Many time happened to me to walk around Madrid in crazy nights, and right near the famous Churreria next to Plaza Major, I’ve always noticed a chic theatre. Well it was Sala Joy Eslava and we played there in a wonderful night, crazy people, one of the best gig of my life. I cannot choose a favorite place in Spain, I love Catalunia, Castella, Andalucia, and we send hugs to all of our friends over there who will read this.

I can imagine me living on tour, it would be perfect as I love to wander around like a cat. I’ve got my places all over Europe, and sometimes I miss them. Few days ago I was looking at some pics we took in Scotland, during the Sonic Syndicate tour. We travelled from London all the way to Edimbourgh, we had a gig in a great concert hall, then guys from the opening band invited us in their house to party and the whole night was amazing.

M.S: What is your future plans?Continue touring?making a video? Compose new material?

We’ll have some gigs this fall and new tours in the next year. There’s a new single to be released soon, and I’m already working on new material. There’s so much to do! And no time to be lazy 😀

M.S: We suppose that you did so many tours through Italy, but it’s the moment to do your first headline tour through Europe or not yet?

Actually, it already happened to be the main act for 3 times, but not in the last 2 years. We had the chance to took part of big artists’ tours and we preferred that. I guess next year will be cool to go as main act gain, but we have no rush. One important target would be touring in the US, who knows…

M.S: We have reached the end of the interview. Thanks for answering our questions. You have our website at your disposal if you want to address your Spanish fans.
