La banda con integrantes de Spock’s Beard, Pattern-Seeking Animals editan su segundo álbum, este «Prehensile Tales» que nos presenta su teclista John Boegehold, además de contarnos su proceso de composición y a que suenan los temas del disco, estas son sus declaraciones..

M.S: Hola, gracias por responder nuestras preguntas, es un placer. ¿Cómo estáis?
De nada. Todo está bien, gracias.
M.S: Para conocer un poco más a la banda, cuéntanos cómo surgió la idea de crear la banda, vuestro estilo musical, etc.
La banda se unió mientras grababa material que finalmente se convirtió en el primer álbum. En ese momento, solo quería grabar algunas demos, pero a los otros chicos y a mí nos gustó la forma en que todo estaba saliendo, así que decidimos hacer una banda. Supongo que nos llamarías progresivo o art rock, pero es una mezcla de estilos. Mis influencias comenzaron con bandas como Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, Kansas, etc., cuando era niño, pero siempre escuché una amplia gama de música y me mantuve al día con el pop, el rock, el jazz, etc.
M.S: ¿De dónde viene el nombre de la banda?
La frase «Pattern-Seeking Animals» fue algo que leí en algún lugar que me gustó y que usé en la letra de mi canción «Bulletproof». Se refiere a los humanos que buscan patrones (que pueden o no existir) a su alrededor en la naturaleza para sobrevivir y evolucionar. Cuando llegó el momento de encontrar el nombre de una banda, parecía una buena, especialmente porque nadie más parecía estar usándola.
M.S .: Con tal elenco de grandes músicos, ¿cómo fue el proceso de composición de vuestros temas?
Trabajar con grandes músicos hace las cosas mucho más fáciles. Escribí las canciones, pero los otros muchachos influyeron en el material a lo largo del camino con algunas partes realmente buenas, sonidos, ideas de arreglos, etc.
M.S: ¿Cuáles son las diferencias con vuestras bandas principales?
Esta es mi banda principal y única, pero la diferencia entre Pattern-Seeking Animals y otros para los que he escrito es que, para bien o para mal, no tengo restricciones en cuanto al tipo o la cantidad de música que escribo.
M.S: «Prehensile Tales» es el segundo álbum. ¿Cómo lo definirías?
Para este álbum queríamos probar algunos enfoques y estilos diferentes que normalmente no se encuentran en el programa. Me encanta la música de todo el mundo, así que me encontré haciendo referencia a algunos sonidos étnicos diferentes y enfoques instrumentales. También agregamos instrumentos adicionales como violín, flauta, trompeta, saxo, etc.
M.S: La portada de «Prehensile Tales» es tan fantástica y pesada, ¿quién la creó?
Un artista polaco llamado Mirek (mirekis7 en Instagram, Facebook, etc.) Cuando comencé a buscar el artwork, finalmente encontré su trabajo e inmediatamente pensé que su estilo surrealista encajaría perfectamente.
M.S: Habéis lanzado dos álbumes en dos años, ¿tendrá PSA más prioridad en vuestras trayectorias?
No puedo hablar por Ted, Dave y Jimmy, pero Pattern-Seeking Animals es la principal prioridad para mí en el futuro..
M.S: Después del Covid19, ¿habrá alguna posibilidad de veros presentando este álbum en vivo o haciendo algún tipo de gira?
Esa es definitivamente la idea, pero es difícil decir cuándo o dónde en este momento. Habíamos planeado hacer la mayor parte del álbum junto con gran parte del álbum debut en RoSfest en mayo de este año, pero después de eso se pospuso, cualquier otro esfuerzo para alinear conciertos en vivo se dejó de lado hasta que las cosas comiencen a volver a la normalidad.

M.S: To get to know the band a little more, tell us how the idea of creating the band , your musical style, etc…
The band came together while recording material that ultimately became the first album. At the time, I just wanted to record some demos but the other guys and I liked the way everything was turning out so we decided to make it a band. I suppose you’d call us progressive or art rock but it’s a mix of styles. My influences started off with bands like Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, Kansas, etc. when I was a kid but I’ve always listened to a wide range of other music and kept up with current pop, rock, jazz, etc.
M.S: Where does the name of the band come from?
The phrase “Pattern-Seeking Animals” was something I read somewhere that I liked and had used in the lyrics to my song “Bulletproof.” It refers to humans who seek out patterns (that may or may not exist) around them in nature in order to survive and evolve. When it came time to come up with a band name, it seemed like a good one, especially since nobody else seemed to be using it.
M.S.: With so many great musicians, how did you work to compose the music?
Working with great musicians makes things a lot easier. I wrote the songs but the other guys influenced the material along the way by coming up with some really great parts, sounds, arrangement ideas, etc.
M.S: What are the differences from your main bands?
This is my main and only band but the difference between Pattern-Seeking Animals and others I’ve written for is that for better or worse, I don’t have any restrictions to the type or amount of music I write.
M.S: “Prehensile Tales ” is second album. How would you define it?
For this album we wanted to try a few different approaches and styles not normally found in prog. I love music from all around the world so I found myself referencing a few different ethnic sounds and instrumental approaches. We also added additional instruments like violin, flute, trumpet, sax, etc.
M.S: “Prehensile Tales ” cover is so fantastic and heavy , who create it?
A Polish artist named Mirek (mirekis7 on Instagram, Facebook, etc.) When I started to look for art, I eventually came across his work and immediately thought his surreal style would be a great fit.
M.S: You have released two albums in two years, will PSA have more priority in your musical careers?
I can’t speak for Ted, Dave and Jimmy but Pattern-Seeking Animals is the top priority with me for the foreseeable future.
M.S: After Covid19, Will there be any chance of seeing you presenting this album live or doing some kind of tour?
That’s definitely the idea but it’s hard to say when or where at this point. We had planned to do most of the album along with much of the debut album at RoSfest in May this year but after that was postponed, any other effort to line up live gigs was put aside until things start to get back to relative normal.
