Neal Morse: Gracias.

¿Has pensado crearlos?

ENGLISH VERSION

Metal Symphony: Wellcome to Metal Symphony again Neal, it is a pleasure for us.

Neal Morse: Thank you.

MS: A new album again. When did you realize it was time to get to work on ‘The Similitude of a Dream’?

NM: Last December I came into the studio to write and really felt inspired, I was writing some stuff I really liked and I felt like I needed to give some direction for these ideas that I was having. Then I remembered that somebody on the internet had told me, made a suggestion that I should do a progressive album based on ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’. I did not know the book, and I got up the notes and was looking at a synopsis of the story. And I started with just some very minimal ideas that I then shared with the band in January. We all mingled our ideas together and began writing this album. I don´t think that any of us really knew for sure we were going to do it at first, it was just an experiment.

MS: In this album you talk about the city of destruction, which is the place where the main character, with in himself, don´t you think that this concept is somewhat antagonistic?

NM: I can see why someone might think that, but it is an inner journey, it is a spiritual journey, so all these concepts in this album and in the book, it is an allegory, meaning, it is a parable or a example, picture, there are not literal things, they are picturing the spiritual condition of the journey that you are on. The important thing of The Pilgrim’s Progress and of the album is that for people to realize that you are on a journey, it is a progression, you are moving forward and salvation is not a onetime thing, it is an ongoing progression. We go to our representative of spiritual places, and in the journey (progressive) it is called pilgrim’s progress because it is not a onetime thing it is a daily walking thing and we go on this journey together.

MS: You have commented that reading the book ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’ could inspire you for 5 more albums, have you thought of materializing this?

NM: No, not really, I am not thinking about that yet, I don´t think another album of that sort for a little while. I am sure when we will taking a breeder from, we will see what god wants.

MS: Some people think that releasing a new album is for a musician like being at peace with himself, is this your case?

NM: Well I do feel compelled to do what I feel called to do, so that does give me peace, to complete something. I am more in awe of how it all turns out, right now, I am just amazed what god has done orchestrating this whole thing, how great the album turned out, how much it is speaking to other people. I am just really thankful for that today, so yes, it is a good day and I have a lot of peace today.

MS: Mike Portnoy has commented that this is one of the best jobs he has been taking part in his carrier. Is this the same for you?

NM: I do think it is one of the best, absolutely, I haven´t said so many things as he has said, but we are different people, but I do think it is a very, very, very strong album and I am very thrilled being part of it.

MS: In this album, all of you contribute with vocal work, did you like the final result of the singing?

NM: very much, we tried a lot of different ways to go about the vocals, there were certain times when each of us would sing a lead vocal and we would pick the one which we like the best. We also changed around some of the configurations of the vocals, like I would listen to a blend and then I said maybe Eric should sing the middle and Bill should sing the top or we would trade around until we got the right sound and I really feel like that we captured it.

MS: Bearing in mind the current situation of modern society, what parallels do we find with between your album, its x and what we see today out on the street.

NM: I think seeking the City of God, like I said, is an inner desire, inner seeking and leading towards and I think that is always available, the answer for people if you want to have peace, you need to have peace within to start with. Always the place to start is an inner journey of seeking god and seeking his peace in your life and that is what this is about.

DSC0314DSC0404DSC0404

MS: I would like to ask you about Eric Gilette, one of the last members to join your musical project, what do you think of his contribution to your music?

NM: I think he is absolutely amazing, I am absolutely thrilled with his contributions on this album and to the live concerts. He is such a warm and caring and friendly guy, really easy to work with. Crazy talented, plays drums, guitar and keys really, insanely well, sings great. He is just a ridicously talented guy and we are very honored to have him as part of the band.

MS: The last time you came to Spain, you did several live dates, but this time you will only do one, what is the reason for this.

NM: I am not sure, I was not really involved in the booking, I turn over a lot of the job involved with the band, the record company stuff, and all the business, I try to turn over a lot as much of it to people who are really good at it. So I don´t know why we are only doing Barcelona, I did not even know that really till I start to do some interviews, so I am sorry we are not playing Madrid but I hope everybody will come on over to Barcelona.

MS: Presumably in this new tour, will you play the whole new album? No other songs?

NM: Oh yes, absolutely and we will do some encores

MS: will you have time this year to take care of the rest of the personal musical projects you are involved, like Transatlantic, Flying Colors..

NM: Yes, FC is getting together in December to write, so hopefully there will be a new FC album in the coming year. We are also working on a couple of other things, putting the ‘Testimony’ out on vinyl hopefully in March a Spock’s Beard Tour and another Morse Fest edition, and the Morse Fest’ 2015 should be out in March also.
