Fueron una de las sensaciones del anterior Sweden Rock como ya adelantamos y por suerte las tendremos abriendo el inminente "DD2 A night to remember" el próximo día 13 de Octubre junto a One Desire, Stage Dolls y Alfonzetti en la Sala Cool de Madrid... Hablamos con la banda para que nos cuente que tal ha ido su año con su último disco “Pull no punches” y que esperan a partir de ahora… Ellas son VA Rocks…

M.S. Saludos desde España. ¿Cómo estás? ¿Nos puedes contar cómo os conocéis, cómo comenzasteis el grupo y de dónde viene el nombre?
Estamos bien. ¡Ilusionadas con la gira de otoño!
Ida y Frida se conocieron en el colegio cuando tenían seis años. Cuando cumplieron diez años, comenzaron un grupo llamado The Black Hearts, con Frida a la batería, Ida guitarra y voz y más tarde Julia al bajo. Para conseguir un nuevo bajista, pusimos notas en todas las tiendas locales esperando que alguien respondiese. Una chica lo hizo. Su nombre fue Klara. En la “audición” le pedimos tocar “I love rock´n´roll” de Joan Jett. No lo conocía muy bien, ni nosotras mismas. Pero nos caía bien y Klara se juntó al grupo y cambiamos el nombre en “VA!?” que significa “QUE”.
En 2009 Naomi dejó el grupo y “VA!?” se convirtió en un trio. En 2015 decidimos de cambiar el nombre, porque sentíamos que “VA!?” era mucho más punk, que fue el estilo de música que tocamos en el comienzo. Nos sentíamos mucho más rock`n`roll y además era muy difícil para la gente de encontrarnos en internet. Querríamos mantener VA, por lo cual decidimos añadir ROCK. Y ahora se nos conoce como VA ROCKS.
M.S. Lleváis 11 años con la banda. ¿Cómo veis la industria con un disco publicado (y un EP agotado) y muchos conciertos hechos? Quizás en Suecia hay más apoyo cultural y al rock, pero aquí en España es demasiado difícil para grupos comenzar su carrera..
La escena de hard rock en Suecia es gigante. Pero como hay tantas bandas, tienes que trabajar muy duro para tener éxito. Tienes que conocer a la genta apropiada y la única manera de conocer a esa gente es tocando mucho y promocionando tu banda. ¡Trabajar duro compensa!!
M.S: En cuanto a vuestra vida personal, ¿todo esto la ha cambiado? ¿Tenéis la misma rutina que tuvisteis hace 11 años? El mismo trabajo quizás..
El grupo ES nuestra vida. Como comenzamos cuando teníamos 12 o 13 años, hemos tenido un grupo durante la mitad de nuestras vidas. Hemos aprendido a tocar juntas y hemos crecido juntas. De cierta manera, no conocemos otra cosa. En el comienzo, la banda era para escaparse de la realidad, para juntarse y escuchar y tocar un poco de música. Nuestros ensayos no han cambiado mucho, nos encontramos, tocamos y tomamos café. Tenemos más conciertos que nunca, trabajamos con un agente muy bueno y tenemos nuestra propia empresa. Todo es todavía placer, pero hemos elevado el nivel de juego.
M.S. “Pull no punches” es vuestra presentación al mundo. ¿Cómo lo definirías?
Nos gusta definir nuestro álbum con la palabra sueca ‘käftsmäll’ que significa ”puñetazo en la cara”. Es como un ”lo mejor de VA ROCKS de los últimos once años”. Algunas canciones son nuevas y algunas hemos tocado a lo largo de los años.
M.S. Vuestro disco fue publicado en el 2015. ¿Tenéis alguna idea cómo el álbum lo está haciendo? Vuestro primer disco contiene grandes contribuciones como de Pontus de Bonafide. ¿Cómo ocurrieron estas colaboraciones?
La respuesta ha sido fenomenal. Hemos vendido casi todas las copias. El disco se ha vendido en muchos países, ¡lo que es guay!
Después de hacer unos conciertos juntos con Bonafide, Ida simplemente preguntó a Pontus si querría cantar y respondió “sí” inmediatamente. Por lo cual cantó unas partes grandiosas y también hizo un solo de guitarra!
Con respecto a Jalle Lorensson (de WILMER X), Ida le envió un mensaje en Facebook preguntando si querría tocar la harmónica en nuestra canción “Killing Me”. Vino encantado al estudio y aportó lo mejor. También hemos tenido el placer de tenerle en nuestros conciertos dos veces.
M.S. El proceso de escribir y las letras vienen de vuestras mentes. ¿Puedes contar cómo trabajáis y cómo os organizáis?
Normalmente es Ida que trae una canción completa o sólo fragmentos, por lo cual podemos escribir la canción cuando ensayamos. Las canciones suelen tratar de nuestras propias experiencias, relaciones, fiestas y defenderte a ti mismo y en lo que crees.
M.S. Es algo natural que músicos han sido influidos por otros músicos y les toman como referencias. ¿Cuáles son nuestras influencias principales? ¿Y cuáles son vuestras bandas favoritas?
Nuestras principales influencias musicales son AC/DC, The Runaways, Girlschool y The Donnas.
Lo que cada una de nosotras escucha varía mucho, todo desde Kiss, Radiohead hasta One Direction. Ahora, adivina quién de nosotras escucha a cada uno de estos, jaja..
M.S. Desde la publicación del disco habéis hechos varios shows sobre todo en Suecia. ¿Cuáles son vuestros planes para después del verano? ¿Pensáis saltar al resto de Europa? Puedes preguntar a Pontus sobre su experiencia de gira en España..
Acabamos de publicar nuestras fechas para el otoño. Incluyen Suecia, Alemania, Dinamarca y…. España! El 13/10 tocamos en Madrid en la Sala Cool. Estamos planificando otra gira para la primavera del próximo año, quizás nos iremos al sur de nuevo!

M.S. Greetings from Spain. How are you? Can you tell us how did you met, started the band and how the name came up?
We’re good! Excited for fall tour dates!
Ida and Frida met in school when they were six years old. When they were ten years old, they started a band together called The Black Hearts, with Frida on the drums, Ida on vocals and guitar and later Julia on bass. In 2006 the band got one more singer called Naomi and bass player Julia left the band. To get a new bass player we put up notes at all the local shops in hope that someone would reply. One girl did. Her name was Klara. At the ‘audition’ we had asked her to play “I love rock’n’roll” by Joan Jett. She didn’t know it very well, neither did we. But we liked her and Klara joined the band and they changed their name to ‘VA!?’, meaning ‘QUE’.
In 2009 Naomi left the band and ‘VA!?’ became a trio. In 2015 we decided to change our band name because we felt that ‘VA!?’ was a lot more punk, which was the style of music that we played in the beginning. felt more rock’n’roll plus it was very hard for people to find us online.
We wanted to keep VA so we decided to add ROCKS. We were now known as VA ROCKS.
M.S: You are 11 years with your band… How do you see the industry with one release (and one sold out Ep) and many shows played? Maybe Sweden has more cultural support and rock support, but here in Spain it’s too difficult for the bands to starts their career…
The hard rock scene in Sweden is HUGE. But since there are so many bands you have to work really hard to make it. You have to know the right kind of people and the only way to get to know these people is by playing a lot and promoting your band. Hard work pays off!
M.S: In a personal way, all of this has changed your life? Do you have the same routine that 11 years ago? Same work maybe….
The band IS our lives. Since we started to play when we we’re 12 and 13 we have been in the band for half our lives. We have learned to play together and we have grown up together. In a way, we don’t know anything else. In the beginning the band was about escaping reality, hanging out listening and playing some music. Our rehearsals haven’t changed that much. We meet, chat, play and drink coffee. We have more shows than ever, we are working with a great agent and we have our own company. Everything is still fun but we have stepped up our game.
M.S: “Pull no punches” is your introduction to the world. How would you define it?
We like to define our album with the Swedish word ‘käftsmäll’, which means ‘punch in the face’. It’s like a best of VA ROCKS from the past eleven years. Some of the songs are new and some we have played for many years.
M.S: The album has been released in 2016. Do you have any feedback of how the album is doing?
The feedback has been great. We have almost sold out all the copies that were printed. The album has been sold in many countries which is cool!
M.S: Your debut features big appearance such as Pontus from Bonafide. How did these collaborations come up?
After playing a few shows together with Bonafide, Ida simply asked Pontus if he wanted to sing and he said yes right away. So he laid down some awesome vocals and a part of the guitar solo!
Regarding Jalle Lorensson (from WILMER X), Ida sent a message on Facebook asking if he wanted to play the harmonica on our song ‘killing me’. He gladly came buy the studio and did a great job. We have also had the pleasure of him joining us on stage two times.
M.S: The writing process and the lyrics come from your minds. Can you tell how you worked and organized yourselves?
Usually it’s Ida who brings either a complete song or just fragments so we can write the songs together while rehearsing. The songs are usually about our own experiences, relationships, partying and standing up for yourself and what you believe in.
M.S: It is something natural that musicians are influenced by other musicians and take them as references. What are your main musical influences? What are your favorite bands?
Our main musical influences are AC/DC, The runaways, Girlschool and The Donnas. What each of us listens to is very different, everything from KISS, Radiohead to One Direction. Guess which group belongs to which one of us? Haha.
M.S: You have played live several since release album in Sweden basically. What are the plans after summer? Do you consider the leap the rest of Europe? You can talk to Pontus about touring in Spain here…
We have just released our fall dates. They include Sweden, Germany, Denmark and… España!!
We are coming to Madrid on 13/10 playing at Sala Cool. We are planning a spring tour next year, maybe we’ll go south again!

We have our fall ‘tour’ coming up. We’re doing a lot of behind the scenes work at the moment… A few week ago we went to Denmark and recorded some new stuff, so keep a look out!
