ENGLISH VERSION

M.S: Hi Cristina, it’s a great pleasure having an interview with you for our website, how are you?

I’m doing pretty good, thanks!

M.S: First of all, let us congratulate you for the 15th anniversary of the band. Considering that there have been very few changes in the line-up and knowing the insides of the band, how do you see the bonding of Lacuna Coil up to date?

Thank you so much! It’s is indeed an awesome accomplishment for us.

I totally see and feel Lacuna Coil as my other real family.

I know it might sound like a pretty obvious thing to say but in reality it is not. Especially if you think about how much time we spend together being friends outside of music as well.

We’ve been together with the same line up pretty much since 1998, so we know each other very well. Hopefully we’ll be together for a lot of many years to come!

M.S: In a more personal level, or maybe as a group, what do you think is still left for you to accomplish? Maybe a conceptual album? Or one with orchestra?

Personally, I like to set goals one at a time and always wait for the inspiration to come with every song I wrote vocals and lyrics for. I think I can speak for my brothers in Lacuna coil, too.

We don’t want to do things because they are "required" by the so called business or because people are expecting something from us. We love our fans but we also know that they want us to be ourselves and who we really are.

Conceptual albums are sometimes weird and can sound pretentious. If there’s no real store that connects all the songs on a record, it’s better to talk about what you can really deeply connect to within your own life.

I would definitely love to play or record with a full orchestra and arrange our songs, but this would not be a thing to "accomplish", it would be just another part of our journey.

What I can definitely say is that we’ve already accomplished our biggest dream, to live with our music.

M.S: Leaving all these hypothesis aside, you are in fact recording a new album right now, so you skipped the previous tradition of a three year lapse of time… It’ll be about two years between Dark Adrenaline and the upcoming cd, are you taking advantage of some creative moment in the band? Does it feel natural to do it earlier than what you are used to? Or was it already planned?

We never planned the time space in between albums. Actually after Comalies 4 years were gone before we released Karmacode!

We just go with the creative flow. After three months in the states at the beginning of the year we had some songs to work with.

Marco Coti Zelati, our bass player and mastermind in the band wrote lots of music because he could not be with us on tour for a problem on his arm he is still dealing with. When we got home, Andrea and I went pretty much every day to his studio working on ideas for vocals. We had to set a deadline for the recording because being the Italians we are, we’re sometimes lazy bums and we need a kick in the butt to do things, LOL! But hey, we always get the job done!

MS: Could you give us some hints about the new album? Title/s, thematic… maybe it’s a bit early yet…

It is definitely too early… We are arranging the lyrics these days and we are still recording the music. Obviously I know a lot of details but… let’s wait a little bit more! I can tell you that it will be a very… cinematic and dark album, in the vein of Dark Adrenaline but even more intense and heavier at times. We also have one special song that deeply touches me.

M.S: As you usually do, you’ve been touring in the US once again, do you consider there’s some point at which you feel more supported in the US than in Europe? What can you recall of this last tour?

I think we pretty much have the same support from both sides of the ocean. The States are bigger so when we tour there, tours are longer and we need to stay there a lot, but we also have a great following in Europe. I am so happy about the fact that we can connect to so many people I’ve never even met. Music is magical.

M.S: Next October you’ll join the line-up of the MFVF in Belgium. After 11 years of this festival, what do you think it still has to offer to the audience?

The bands are quite different every edition so there is always a surprise in terms of newcomers or new shows given by the most known acts. If you like bands fronted women this is definitely the place to be, and is also something unique in the world!

M.S: On your side, what will you offer MFVF’s audience? Last year you were there to celebrate its 10th anniversary, will this year’s show be different from that one? Will you gift us with a new song maybe?

We played last year and it was a success, so we’ve been invited again and decided to do something we’ve never done before, play one complete album from the past. We will be playing ALL the songs from the album Karmacode, plus some more…

M.S: Is there any band/s you’re really interested in watching live at the fest?

The same day we play I’m looking forward to meeting Sharon, Liv and Charlotte.

It’s a pity that Anneke, Tarja and Floor are playing the day after. We’ll be gone already and unfortunately I won’t see them.

M.S: Just being curious, we’re asking all the bands attending the fest that we’re interviewing who would they like to do a jam session with on stage… Many of them answered they’d like to play with Anneke, who would be your choice?

I’ve known Anneke for years now and she is a great person and singer. I would love to sing with her again as we did during a tour we did long time ago. But as I said, she will be playing the day after our performance and we will not be in town anymore because we have to go back home to prepare the upcoming "Tragic Illusion" tour with Paradise Lost and Katatonia starting at the end of October.

lc4 Lacuna Coil 10 de Octubre12 Rock Café (Tallinn Estonia)lc6 Lacuna Coil 10 de Octubre12 Rock Café (Tallinn Estonia)

M.S: Do you consider there’s still life for the genre? Is there more to explore beyond the "so well-know lyrical voices with metal music"? We know there are bands with gutural voices (even female ones), and others are trying mixing this music with other types like electronic and some others, but there’s still people who won’t look further from that first notion…

Honestly, I do not know and I don’t want to worry about that at all because there will always be space for this musical genre as long as it’s made with heart and soul. We like to evolve anyway because it’s part of us as band, but the core will always be the same.

M.S: You’re one of the few musicians who share personal life on social networks, and so having a closer and more immediate relationship with your fans, aren’t you? This media may be very advantageous for musicians nowadays, don’t you think? That feeling on both parts, and seeing that one needs from the other…

I like to keep in touch with my/our fans and keep them updated on what I do on Cristina Scabbia Official on Facebook and on Missscabbia on Instagram and Twitter.

I never really post stuff about my very private life because my family, partner and close friends are sacred to me… but I do share a lot of my days with people and reply to posts and comments as much as I can. It is a sort of a job because it takes time and request dedication but I love to do it. Plus our fans are absolutely the best!!!

lacunacoil09 (II) Costa de Fuego 20 de Julio12 Benicàssim (Castellón)lacunacoil12 (II) Costa de Fuego 20 de Julio12 Benicàssim (Castellón)

M.S: Also, you’re one of the guest musicians in next Arjen Lucassen’s Ayreon project. How was the experience of entering Arjen’s world and singing about time and space? As I recall, you’ve never worked together before, right? Tell us more about all this please.

I will be one the guests on Ayreon new album "The theory of everything" and I am thrilled about that! I met Arjen before and we already talked about the possibility of working together but we couldn’t do it before, we were both busy at the same time. Finally we were able to make this collaboration true, so I spent a couple of days in his studio in Belgium recording the parts. I learned with demos I got few weeks before. It was really challenging for me because it is always harder to sing parts written by someone else and the guide demo was sung by a male singer. I loved the songs I had to sing and I can’t wait to hear the whole record and see Arjen again, he is such a kind and inspiring person!

M.S: 15 years ago you came out of your birth place, Italy, just like others like Rhapsody or Labyrinth (being these from different genres). How do you see Italy’s music scene nowadays? Would you recommend any band/artist?

I don’t really know much about the situation or state of the Italian rock and metal scene anymore because I am not here very often. Bands that I can recommend; Cayne, Node and Sacred Sphere.

< em>lc11 Lacuna Coil 10 de Octubre12 Rock Café (Tallinn Estonia)

M.S: We wanted to ask you if after UK’s tour you’d consider visiting Spain, but taking into account you’re immerse in the next album’s we can guess you won’t be playing any more shows apart from the ones with Paradise Lost and Katatonia, will you? You’ll want to focus on the new music that’s coming…

At the moment the only dates planned are the ones with Paradise Lost and Katatonia, but be sure that next year will be full of tours and I am confident that we will include Spain in the schedule. We can’t wait to be back over there!!!

M.S: Thank you so very much for you time, it’s been a pleasure. If you want to add anything else, this is the right time. Thanks again, and see you at the MFVF!

We are working very hard for the new album and we are extremely inspired… We can’t wait to share our art with you all soon, stay tuned and thank you so much for the support! Horns up!
