Quedándonos más prendados por la banda tras su actuación en el pasado Monsters of Rock Cruise y tras haber acabado su nuevo disco, podemos hablar con el frontman de los míticos Stryper, Michael Sweet… Para que nos cuente como vivieron el festival, que nos espera en ese nuevo disco y sus próximos pasos entre otras cosas…

M.S: Hola Michael, es un enorme placer tenerte en nuestro medio aunque no sea en las mejores circunstancias, esperamos que estéis todos bien. Os vimos hace pocas semanas en el pasado Monsters of Rock Cruise y nos disteis unos conciertos magistrales. Aunque ya sea habitual veros a bordo tanto a la banda como a ti en solitario, ¿qué balance haces de vuestros conciertos de este año en el barco y de esta edición 2020 en general? Suponemos que sí, pero… ¿volveréis?
Siempre nos encanta ser parte del MOR! Aunque no se sabe exactamente cuándo volveremos, estoy seguro de que lo haremos en algún momento. ¡Muchos de nuestros fans nos apoyan en el crucero y realmente es un buen momento!
M.S: Nos encantó ver vuestro mítico diseño de guitarras y la estética en el escenario, como siempre todo conjuntado en negro y amarillo… ¿Quien se encarga de todo eso? ¿Cuántas guitarras podéis tener con diseños diferentes?
Estuve con Washburn durante casi 4 años, pero estoy buscando una nueva casa con respecto a las guitarras. Una vez que la encuentre, lo anunciaré y se lo haré saber a todos. Hicieron un trabajo excelente en todas mis guitarras y lo han hecho muy, muy bien.
M.S: Estabais celebrando vuestro History Tour, pues os acercáis a los 40 años de carrera musical en la que sin duda habréis pasado por momentos de todo tipo… ¿Nos puedes contar cómo ves ese paso del tiempo para el grupo? ¿Contentos por todo lo conseguido?
Estoy muy orgulloso de lo que hemos logrado. Es difícil creer que hayan pasado casi 40 años. Parece que fue ayer. Creo que lo mejor está por venir y, aunque hemos logrado mucho, haremos mucho más en los próximos años.
M.S: Con motivo de esta celebración de vuestros 40 años, ¿habrá algún lanzamiento especial, reediciones en vinilo tal vez…? Tenemos el “In God We Trust” o el “To Hell With The Devil” en vinilo demasiado rayados, no estaría nada mal renovarlos, jeje…
Tenemos pensado volver a grabar mucha de nuestra música pasada. Estoy seguro de que también planificaremos una gira especial para celebrar el 40 aniversario. Será un momento increíble y planificaremos algo muy especial. Manténganse al tanto…..
M.S: Siempre habéis estado muy activos y vuestro último trabajo ha sido “God Damn Evil”. ¿Estáis ya pensando en el siguiente o en el proceso de composición?
El nuevo álbum de Stryper ya está completo. Acabamos de terminar de mezclarlo y ahora va al mastering. ¡Nos morimos de ganas de que todos los fans escuchen esto! Creo que es nuestro mejor álbum hasta ahora y hay una gama tan amplia de canciones y estilos en este álbum que seguramente complacerá a todos los fans.
M.S: El año pasado salió tu más reciente trabajo en solitario “Ten”, ¿cómo fue la experiencia esta vez? ¿Qué te mueve a editar trabajos en solitario al margen de Stryper? ¿Te quedaron temas para sacar otro más adelante o ya lo próximo que compongas será para dedicárselo a Stryper?
Estoy constantemente escribiendo y estoy muy decidido. Me encanta escribir y grabar y cuando Stryper tiene momentos de inactividad, aprovecho eso. Tengo muchas oportunidades que se me presentan y me gusta ver esas oportunidades. Soy muy afortunado de poder grabar en el Tour con Stryper y grabar en el Tour por mi cuenta. Es una verdadera bendición.
M.S: Antes que sucediera todo esto del COVID19, ¿qué planes más inmediatos teníais? Imaginamos que habréis tenido que posponer muchos conciertos y compromisos…
Desafortunadamente sí, hemos tenido que posponer la gira en solitario, así como los shows de Stryper. Nos lo estamos tomando con calma y espero que recibamos buenas noticias más pronto que tarde. Nuestros planes son, por supuesto, continuar girando y hacerlo lo más rápido posible.
M.S: En estos días de cuarentena vemos que muchos grupos ofrecen material por sus distintas redes sociales, ¿Habéis pensado hacer vosotros algo también? Tipo publicar algún directo, un concierto en diferido o similar, etc.
Estoy tratando de no subirme al carro. Pienso hacer algo, pero no estoy seguro de cuándo y dónde. Ya hice algunas cosas y me uní a Cameo y ha sido increíble. Avisaré a todos una vez que reserve o planifique una transmisión en vivo.
M.S: Muchas gracias por vuestro tiempo, si queréis decir algo a nuestros lectores este es el momento… Esperamos que esta situación pase lo antes posible y pronto todo vuelva a la normalidad, ojalá sea así y volvamos a veros de nuevo en las carreteras, sobre todo en las de España!

M.S: Hello Michael, it is a great pleasure to have you in our website, even if it is not in the best circumstances, we hope you are all well. We saw you a few weeks ago in the past Monsters of Rock Cruise and you gave us some great concerts. Although it is usual to see both the band and you on board alone, could you take stock of your concerts on the ship this year and, on the whole, of this 2020 edition? We suppose so, but … will you come back?
We always enjoy being a part of MOR! Although it’s uncertain exactly when we’ll be back, I’m sure we will at some point. Many of our fans support us on the cruise and it really is a great time!
M.S: We loved seeing your legendary guitar design and your aesthetic on stage, as always everything combined in black and yellow … Who is in charge of that? How many guitars can you have with different designs?
I was with Washburn for almost 4 years but I am looking for a new home regarding guitars. Once I find that home I will announce and let everyone know. They did an outstanding job on all my guitars and they have done very, very well.
M.S: You were celebrating your History Tour, since you are approaching 40 years of musical career in which you will undoubtedly have gone through all kind of moments… Can you tell us how you see that passing of time for the group? Are you happy for everything you have achieved?
I am so proud of what we have accomplished. It’s hard to believe that almost 40 years have passed. It seems like yesterday. I do believe that our best is yet to come and although we have accomplished so much, we will do so much more over the years to come.
M.S: On the occasion of your 40 year celebration, will there be any special release, vinyl record reissues perhaps …? We have «In God We Trust» or «To Hell With The Devil» too scratched, it would be a good thing to renew them, hehe …
We do plan to re-record a lot of the past Music. I’m certain that we will also plan a special tour to celebrate the 40 year anniversary. It will be an amazing time and we will plan something very special. Stay tuned…..
M.S: You are always very active working and your last album was «God Damn Evil». Are you already thinking about the next one or working on the composition process?
The new Stryper album is already complete. We just finished mixing it and it is now going to (Mastering). We cannot wait for all the fans to hear this! I believe that it is our best album yet and there is such a wide range of songs and styles on this album that it is sure to please every fan.
M.S: You released your solo work «Ten» last year, how was the experience? What moves you to release solo works without the band? Do you have any songs left to release later, or are you going to work for Stryper now?
I am constantly writing and I am very determined. I love to write and record and when Stryper has downtime I take it vantage of that. I have many opportunities that come my way and I like to see’s those opportunities. I’m very blessed to be able to record in Tour with Stryper and record in Tour on my own. It’s a real blessing.
M.S: Before all this COVID19 thing happened, what plans did you have? We imagine that you will have to postpone many concerts and commitments …
Unfortunately yes, we have had to postpone the solo tour as well as Stryper shows. We are taking it one day at a time and I hope that we receive good news sooner than later. Our plans are to of course continue touring and do so as quickly as possible.
M.S: In these days of quarantine we see that many groups offer material through their different social networks, are you planning to do the same thing too? Kind of streaming some live concert, a pre-recorded gig , etc.
I’m trying not to jump on a bandwagon’s. I do plan to do something but I’m just not sure when and where. I’ve already done a few things and I joined Cameo and it has been incredible. I will let everyone know once I book or plan a live stream.
MS: Thank you very much for your time.
