Si hablamos de los guitarristas que hacen y han hecho historia, es inevitable que aparezca el nombre de Steve Vai. Y si además cobramos consciencia de la frecuencia en la que ha visitado nuestro país en el último año, no podemos más que reconocer lo afortunados que estamos siendo. Tanto para los que no hayan tenido la ocasión de haberlo visto hasta hoy, como para los que ya lo hayan hecho, tenemos la oportunidad (a partir de hoy en Murcia) de volver a presenciar sus conciertos, que como los anteriores serán místicos e irrepetibles. Nos ponemos en contacto con el “Maestro de la Guitarra” para que nos cuente sobre su próxima gira y sus planes de futuro. Toni Marchante |

-Primeramente muchísimas gracias por atendernos, no todos los días se puede entrevistar a una Leyenda de la Guitarra.
– Eres muy amable, gracias
-A finales de agosto comienzas nueva gira por Europa que se prolongará por Norte América hasta finales de Noviembre. Esta gira pasará por España visitando además de Barcelona otras ciudades poco habituales como Pamplona, Murcia, Sevilla, Málaga, Zaragoza, Mallorca y Burjassot (Valencia). Pero esto no sólo ocurre en España, también lo vas a hacer en muchos otros países. ¿Con esto pretendes llegar al mayor número de sitios posibles para que todos tus fans puedan disfrutar de tus conciertos?
– Bueno, sí. Me encanta estar de gira, y en especial me gusta mucho ir a lugares donde el público no suele tener muchos grupos de rock porque son entusiastas, y no aburridos. Encuentro que es algo muy especial estar en esos sitios. Hay lugares en el mundo donde yo fui el primer artista de rock americano que actuaba allí, como en China en los 90, y algunos países de Europa del este.
En abril de 2014 estoy planeando un tour por 25 ciudades de Rusia. Muchos artistas que van allí van a Moscú o San Petersburgo. Pero Rusia es enorme, y hay mucho sitios que tienen mucha gente joven y mayor que les encanta el rock y las guitarras. Me siento muy bendecido de poder ir a esos sitios a tocar.
-En España estamos muy contentos y entusiasmados porque en muy poco tiempo nos has ofrecido varios conciertos. En 2012 viniste a presentarnos “The Story of Light” y el pasado mes de mayo viniste a Madrid acompañado por una Orquesta. Ahora nos visitas de nuevo y nos gustaría saber el performance que nos vienes a presentar. ¿Será una continuación de la gira de presentación de tu último álbum “The Story of Light”? o ¿Irá enfocada hacia los clásicos de tu carrera?
– Sí, esta gira que estoy haciendo en España es una continuación de la gira del "The Story of Light". Cuando vine a España el año pasado e hice la gira con mi grupo de rock se me advirtió de no venir porque la economía estaba sufriendo estragos y las entradas para muchos grupos de rock no se vendían. Hacía un tiempo que no venía por España y decidí aceptar el reto y hacer de ello algo espectacular.
El grupo está en su mejor momento, y yo estoy tocando mejor que nunca, así que quiero hacer cuantos más conciertos mejor.
-Siempre has sido una persona que te has rodeado de grandísimos músicos en tus conciertos e imagino que para esta ocasión ocurrirá lo mismo. ¿Nos podrías adelantar los músicos que te acompañarán en esta parte de la gira?
Los músicos de este grupo han estado conmigo unos 10 años. Tengo a Dave Wiener a la guitarra, Jeremy Colson en la batería y Phillip Bynoe en el bajo. A parte de tocar juntos muy bien, nos queremos como si fuéramos familia.
-Tuve la suerte de poder asistir a tu concierto en Madrid el pasado mes de Junio, junto con la Evolution Tempo Orchestra. Los que asistimos quedamos maravillados ante el gran espectáculo. ¿Qué recuerdos te quedan de aquel concierto?
– Es una experiencia muy especial para mí el poder tocar con orquesta. Una orquesta respira diferente de un grupo de rock, pero en la orquesta había también incluido un grupo de rock, así que había un buen equilibrio. La música está muy integrada, así que los instrumentos eléctricos complementan a los de la orquesta.
También grabé ese directo y espero poder hacer algo con ello. Mis recuerdos sobre todo se centran en lo increíble que fue el público. Hay algo en el público español que son incondicionales y muy entusiastas. Es maravilloso.
-La última vez que hablamos contigo nos dijiste que tu siguiente idea en cuanto a grabaciones era hacer un disco más, similar en perspectiva a “Real Illusions” y “The Story of Light”, con el objetivo de coger estos tres discos y poner las canciones en el orden correcto, meter voz en muchas de las melodías y añadir otro disco de narrativa y poner música, para crear una cuadrilogía final, que sea más que una ópera, donde pudieras seguir la historia desde el comienzo hasta el final de forma lineal. Cuando termines la presente gira me imagino que tomarás unas merecidas vacaciones, pero ¿será este el siguiente paso en tus planes de futuro o tienes pensado aparcar esta idea para más adelante, con el fin de acometer otros nuevos proyectos?
– No acabaré esta gira hasta junio de 2014, y después sí, me tomaré un mes entero de descanso y me iré a una isla exótica con mi mujer. ¡Sin teléfono ni internet!
Después de eso, lo primero que haré será completar un DVD/CD de un concierto que hice con este grupo el año pasado en el Nokia de Los Ángeles. Luego me gustaría trabajar en el lanzamiento de música que tengo grabada con la orquesta. Y después trabajaré en un nuevo disco de estudio, pero no será parte de la cuadrilogía de "Real Illusions" Quiero dejar algo de tiempo en medio de ello.
-¿Cuál es la situación a día de hoy de G3? ¿Tenéis previsto realizar alguna gira el próximo año o el proyecto se encuentra en stand by?
– No hay nada planeado para el próximo año que yo sepa, pero nunca sabes lo que puede pasar
-Llegó el final de la entrevista, no sin antes darte las gracias en nombre de Metal Symphony e invitándote a que te dirijas a nuestros lectores que esperan verte en tus próximos conciertos.

First at all, thank you very much for attending us. Having the chance to interview such a guitar Legend is not arising every day.
S- You are very kind, Thanks.
You are starting in Europe you new Tour by the end of August and will extend it until late November throughout North America. This tour will cross Spain visiting Barcelona, among some other unusual cities like Pamplona, Murcia, Seville, Malaga, Zaragoza, Mallorca and Burjassot (Valencia). But this is not only going to happen in Spain, as you have planned to do it in many other countries. Is this how you intend to reach the greatest number of possible sites to enable all your fans to enjoy your concerts?
S- Well, yes. I really enjoy touring and I especially like to go to places where the audiences do not usually get a lot of rock bands because they are very enthusiastic and not jaded. There is something very special to me about being in these kinds of places. There are places in the world where I was the first American Rock artist to perform such as China in the 90’s, and some places in Eastern Europe.
In April of 2014 I am planning a 25 city tour of Russia. Most artists who go there usually only go to Moscow and St. Petersburg. But Russia is huge and there are many places that have the population of young people and older people, who love rock guitar. I’m really blessed to be able to go to all these places and play.
We are really happy and excited in Spain because you have offered us several concerts in a very short lapse of time. 2012 you visited us to introduce "The Story of Life" and last May you were in Madrid with an orchestra. You are visiting us now again and we really would like to know about the performance you want to show us. Is it meant to be the continuation of the promotion tour of your latest album "The Story of Life" or are you focusing it into the classics of your career?
S- Yes, this tour that I am doing in Spain is a continuation of the rock band tour for “The Story of Light”. When I went to Spain last year and toured with my rock band I was advised not to go because the economy was having challenges and tickets for many rock bands were not selling. I had not been to Spain for a while and I just decided to take my chances and it turned out spectacular.
The band is so hot and I’m playing better than ever so I want to tour as much as I can now.
In your concerts, great musicians have always surrounded you and I imagine that in this occasion the same will happen. Would you mind to advance what musicians will join you in this part of the tour?
S- The musicians in this band have been with me for over 10 years. I have Dave Wiener on guitar, Jeremy Colson on drums, and Phillip Bynoe on bass. Besides playing together very well we love each other like a family.
Last June I was lucky enough to enjoy your concert with the Evolution Tempo Orchestra in Madrid. Everyone who experienced it was amazed by the great performance. What are your memories about it?
S- It’s a very special experience for me to play with an orchestra. An orchestra breaths very different than a rock band but the orchestra had a rock band in it too so it was a good balance. The music is very integrated so the electric instruments compliment the orchestra instruments.
I also recorded that show and hope to do something with it. My memories are really about how amazing the audience was. There is something about Spain where the audience is just so supportive and excited. It’s wonderful.
Last time we talked you explained to us that your next recording idea was to issue one additional album, similar to "Real Illusions" and "The Story of Light", to reorganize the songs of the three records in the right order, including vocals in many of the melodies and adding another narrative musical record in order to create a final tetralogy, to get more than an opera, where you could follow a linear story from the beginning to the end. Once you finish this tour, I imagine you will take a well deserved vacation, but will this idea be the next step in your future plans or do you intend to set it aside for later on, so as to undertake other new projects?
S- I don’t finish this tour until June of 2014 and then yes, I will take one full month off and go to an exotic island with my wife. There will be no phones or internet!
After that, the first thing I will do is complete a DVD/CD of a show I did with this band last year at the Nokia in Los Angeles. Then I would like to work on releasing some of the music I recorded with the orchestra. Then I will work on a new studio record but it will not be a record that is part of the “Real Illusions” Quadrilogy. I want to put some time in between that.
What is the G3 situation today? Have you planned any tour next year or is the project in stand by?
S- Nothing is planned for next year that I know of but you never know what can happen.
