M.S: Primero de todo, gracias por responder a nuestras preguntas. Queremos felicitaros por vuestra carrera y deciros que os admiramos…
Pete Jupp – Qué gentiles, muchas gracias
M.S: FM es un grupo muy importante en la escena del Rock Melódico. Empezasteis en 1986 con un debut fantástico y desde entonces habéis lanzado discos magníficos. Desde 1986 a 2011. ¿Qué ha cambiado musicalmente en estos años para FM? ¿Y qué permanece intacto?
Merv Goldsworthy – El proceso de composición permanece intacto, como siempre ha sido, lo que ha cambiado últimamente es el avance en tecnología, esto hace que el proceso de grabación sea más fácil.
Steve Overland – Escribiré por separado con Pete, Jim y entonces meteremos las canciones en ensayos y las haremos a nuestro estilo. Algunas veces no cambiarán con respecto la idea original, pero a veces hay una diferencia radical. Me gusta bastante el proceso de componer, nunca sabes lo que va a salir.
PJ – Con Metropolis intentamos tomar aquellos elementos que pensábamos que eran los mejores, de nuestros discos anteriores, pero también intentar traer el sonido FM más actualizado. La respuesta a este disco ha sido tremenda, así que pienso que hemos tenido éxito. Estamos muy orgullosos por el álbum.
M.S: Desde un punto de vista externo, ¿qué pensáis de la unidad de FM después de tantos años?
PJ – Cuando el grupo se separó en los noventa, no fue porque habíamos decaído, éramos todavía lo mejor como amigos, pero el ambiente musical había cambiado demasiado, así que era imposible sobrellevarlo. Cuando nos juntamos para tocar en el Firefest en 2007, lo planeamos para que fuera un único concierto, sin ningún plan una vez pasado el evento. Pensamos que si se presentaban 200 fans, eso sería un éxito. Imagina nuestra sorpresa cuando salimos al escenario ante un lleno de 1500 personas, con fans viajando desde cualquier parte del mundo. Fue una experiencia muy emocionante, y fue después del éxito del evento, cuando decidimos continuar y deber a nuestros fans más leales un nuevo disco. Así que la unidad entre los miembros del grupo y los fans nunca desapareció, lo que es genial.
M.S: Tenéis un nuevo EP “City Limits” con una nueva canción “Start It Up”, ¿cómo surgió esta canción?
PJ – Era una canción que no se incluyó en las sesiones del “Metropolis”, así que decidimos incluirla en este EP, así de sencillo. Siempre intentamos dar a nuestros fans una buena relación calidad-precio y tanto los EPs “Wildside”, como “City Limits” han sido bien acogidos. Planeamos sacar más.
SO – Disfruto mucho haciendo las versiones acústicas de nuestras viejas canciones y, también, son muy bien recibidas. Las mezclas extendidas de Pete, una reversión de las mezclas de 12” que sacamos, también son divertidas. No hay reglas, simplemente vamos a por ello. Pienso que los EPs son una gran idea.
M.S: El grupo ha pasado por varios cambios últimamente, ¿por qué y quienes son los nuevos miembros de FM?
Jim Kirkpatrick – Hola, soy el nuevo! El guitarrista Jim Kirkpatrick. De hecho, llevo en el grupo desde hace dos años, así que no es tan reciente. Me uní una vez que Andy Barnett abandonó el grupo a finales de 2008.
PJ – Andy estaba muy emocionado cuando nos juntamos y tocamos en el Firefest, pero cuando se fue a grabar el nuevo disco, él parecía reacio a tocarnos alguna de sus canciones que tenía en mente. Su vida personal era un poco confusa, estaba pensando en colocarse en el extranjero, así que parecía que lo mejor era dejar el grupo. Jim había venido y fue una gran diferencia. Los fans dicen que el grupo suena más a como cuando Chris estaba con nosotros.
M.S: ¿Piensas que hay suficientes buenos grupos en el panorama del Hard Rock/AOR? ¿Qué piensas del futuro de este de tipo/género de música?
PJ – Pienso que el panorama es muy vibrante y más sano que lo que fue hace tiempo. Hay algunos buenos y nuevos grupos que siguen la estela de H.E.A.T, siendo especialmente buenos, incluso está bien que algunos de los grupos clásicos como Mr. Big vuelven a estar juntos. La melodía vuelve a estar en el estrellato.
M.S: Comenzaréis vuestra próxima gira en Madrid en unos días, ¿qué nos podemos encontrar en un directo de FM?
PJ – Tenemos como objetivo tocar una buena muestra representativa de nuestros discos. Queremos oír a nuestros fans españoles cantando todos juntos. Nuestros directos son como una gran fiesta, queremos ver a nuestro público involucrado en el tinglado. Estamos muy emocionados por nuestro primer concierto en España. ¡¡¡Va a ser la bomba!!!
SO – Nunca he estado en Madrid y querría ver la ciudad si tenemos tiempo, o al menos algunos bares 🙂
M.S: Después de la gira y de la promoción de este EP, ¿qué pensáis hacer? ¿Cuáles son vuestros próximos planes?
PJ – Ya estamos grabando la continuación de “Metropolis” y va bastante bien. Vamos a dar más actuaciones por Europa este verano. Ahora mismo, apreciamos cada minuto y pensamos seguir dando conciertos y sacando discos durante el mayor tiempo posible.
SO – Más de lo mismo. Hay mucho más por venir de la mano de FM.
M.S: ¿Qué hacéis además de música rock? ¿FM es un trabajo a tiempo completo? Si no fuérais músicos, seríais…
JK – FM no nos acapara mucho tiempo, pero no se queda lejos. Todos trabajamos bastante, como músicos a tiempo completo, haciendo distintas actuaciones, sesiones y algunas que otras composiciones y producciones. Si no fuese músico, entonces probablemente estaría en el paro…

M.S: FM is a very important band in the Melodic Rock scene, You started in 1986 with a wonderful debut and since then have release great albums. From 1986 to 2011. What has musically change in all these years for FM? What remain the same?
Merv Goldsworthy – The songwriting process remains pretty much the same as it’s always been, what has changed since the early days is the advance in technology, this makes the recording process a lot easier.
Steve Overland – I’ll write separately with Merv, Pete, Jim and the we’ll take the songs into rehearsals and FMize them. Sometimes they will not change much from the original idea but sometimes there is a radical difference. I really enjoy the writing process you never know what’s going to come out.
PJ – With Metropolis we tried to take what we thought were the best elements from each of our previous albums but also try to bring the FM sound more up to date. The response to the album has been tremendous so I think we succeeded. We’re very proud of the album.
M.S: From an outsider’s point of view, What do you think of the FM unity after so many years?
PJ – When the band split in the nineties it wasn’t because we had fallen out, we were still the best of friends but the musical climate had changed so much it was impossible to carry on. When we got back together to do Firefest in 2007 we really did plan it as a one-off, no plans past that one show. We thought if 200 fans turned up that would be a result. Imagine our surprise when we walked out onstage to a 1500 sell out with fans travelling from all over the world. It was such an emotional experience it was after the success of the show that we decided to carry on and we owed our loyal fans a new album. So the unity between the band members and with the fans never went away which is great.
M.S: You Have a new EP “City Limits” with a new song “Start it up”,How did this song come up?
PJ – It was a song left over from the "Metropolis" sessions so we included it on the EP simple as that. We always try to give our fans value for money and both the Wildside and City Limits EPs have gone down very well. We plan on releasing more.
SO – I really enjoy doing the acoustic versions of our old songs and they are really well received too. Pete’s extended mixes, a throwback to the 12" mixes we released, are fun too. There are no rules we just go for it. I think the EPs are a great idea.
M.S: The band has gone through some changes lately..why was that and who are the new members of FM?
Jim Kirkpatrick – Hi, I’m the ‘new guy’! Guitar player Jim Kirkpatrick. I’ve actually been in the band for over 2 years now so it’s not that recent. I joined after Andy Barnett left the band at the end of 2008.
PJ – Andy was really excited when we got back together and played Firefest but when it came to recording the new album he seemed reluctant to play us any of his song ideas. His personal life was a bit in turmoil, he was thinking of relocating abroad so it seemed best he quit the band. Jim has come in and made a huge difference. Fans say the band sounds more like we did when Chris was with us.
M.S: Do you think there are enough good bands in the Hard Rock/AOR scene? What do you think of the future of that genre of music?
PJ – I think the scene is very vibrant and more healthy than it’s been for a long time. There are song great new bands coming through H.E.A.T. being especially good, also it’s great some of the classic bands like Mr Big are back together. Melody is back in vogue big time.
M.S: You’ll begin your next tour in Madrid in a few days, What can we find in a FM live performance?
PJ – We’re aiming to play a good cross-section from our albums. We want to hear our Spanish fans singing along. Our live shows are like a big party, we want to see our audience getting involved big time. We’re all really excited about our first live show in Spain. Its going to be a blast.
SO – I’ve never been to Madrid and I’m looking forward to exploring the city if we have time, or at least some bars 🙂
M.S: After the tour and promoting this EP, what do you intend to do? Which are your future plans?
PJ – We are already recording the follow-up to Metropolis and it’s going really well. We are doing some more European shows in the summer. We’re loving every minute at the moment and plan to carry on playing shows and making albums for as long as possible.
SO – More of the same. There is a lot more to come from FM.
MS: what are you doing besides Rock music? Is FM a full time job? If you were not a musician, you would be a…
JK – FM isn’t full time for us but it’s not far off! We all work pretty much as full time musicians doing various gigs, sessions and bits of writing and producing. If I wasn’t a musician then I’d probably be on the dole….
