R.A.: Yeah! Muy bueno, asombroso, realmente bueno, grandes chicos. Realmente buenos, super buenos chicos!.

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

R.A: Sí mucho!

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

ENtrevista a Ray Adler

MS: “A Pleasant shade of Grey” es arte

R.A: Muchas gracias! (en español)

M.S: Hi Ray, it’s nice to have you on our website, thanks for your time …

RA: well, gracias

M.S: Did you like Jeff Scott Soto’s concert last week? What do you think of his new repertoire?

R.A.: Yeah! great. Amazing. Really cool, great guys. Super nice guys!

M.S: What do you think of his new set?

R.A.: Yeah, I have to admit that I didn’t know Jeff solo music. Solo stuff. I know the Yngwie stuff, the Sons of Apollo. But his solo stuff I don’t really know. So it’s cool, I liked it a lot.

MS: So heavy, as hell.

RA: Yeah, and his guitar player and bass player are great singers too. So that was really cool yeah.

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

M.S.: In two weeks you publish your new solo album “What the water wanted”, what can you tell us about it?

R.A: It’s my first solo album, about 20 years ago I did a solo project with some friends in L.A. Joey Vera, Bernie (Versailles) and Pete Parada who know plays with The Offspring. But then I gave it a name, Engine, because you know, I thought I wanted another band, you know, just to have another band, go out on tour, have some fun and do things. But this time is just a solo album. I wasn’t gonna go for tour really, I will just, maybe gonna do some shows one day but the whole thing is just doing an album by myself with some people that I found, and that’s what we did. Do some different kinds of music. Do some heavy stuff, some melodic stuff, some just off the wall kind of weird stuff I will normally do with Fates Warning. So that was pretty much the point, yeah.

M.S: This is your first solo album, why now? What is the reason….

RA: I have the time, you know. Fates did a bunch, we did 2 albums in the last five years and we were really busy the last five years: touring, recording and writing.

MS: I saw you maybe in Sweden Rock

R.A: yeah, with Joe (DiBiase) as our old bass player cause Joey had to do something. But yeah, we were really busy and Jim told me he was gonna do another album with our old singer John Arch. So I say, ok, now I have a break I have time. Instead of sitting around doing nothing, waiting, I decided that this is the time to do a solo album. That’s what it was, good timing.

M.S: For those who do not know, introduce us to the band that has recorded your album ….

RA: Yeah, one of the guitar players is Tony Hernando and songwriter. Tony Hernando is the guitar player of Lords of Black. Mike Abdow is the touring guitar player with Fates Warning, I know him from years now.And Craig Anderson play drums, who is an old friend of mine I know him from twenty years already, I just know he was a great drummer and will do a great job. And that’s the core of the band. Originally before I started the solo project I thought I will give different guitar players, and different bass players and drummers and you know, we’ll just make all these different songs with different people. But as the time drew closerI realised It will just be a nightmare logistically putting all these guys together.

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

MS: Continuing with your last album..What is the difference between your songs and those of fates warning?

RA: Oh yeah! I wanted to hire a bunch of different people to write different songs and it got to be too much of a pain in the ass, to get this guitar player, this bass player, this drumm player sending tracks all over the place. So I actually met Tony (Hernando), doing his bass player for Ronnie, I met Ronnie on the metro and we start talking he seems like a cool guy we went on to have a couple of beers, and Ronnie said you know my guitar player Tony is a big fan of Fates Warning and would love to meet you. So I actually went to have beers with Ronnie (Ronnie Romero) and Tony showed up and just start talking we became friends and then brought up to Tony that I’m thinking of doing a solo album, I live now in Madrid and music is pretty much the only thing that I do. So let’s do stuff. So he started sending me songs and they were cool and they were more power metal than I wanted, not really my thing. It’s not that I dislike it, I just don’t listen to it. And I wanted some different styles more you know…I don’t know, I don’t know what I heard….and then Tony went very busy with Lords of Black and he didn’t have as much time as he wanted or I wanted to work on the album so Mike approached me and asked If I wanted him to contribute and I said: yeah show me what you’ve got. And he started to send me songs and they were great they were amazing, you know, started to work with Mike and Tony, and I always knew I was going to use Craig for the drums. And we wrote a lot of songs. There’s still several songs that we didn’t finish or didn’t continue working because basically we ran out of time. So, you know, there are still 3 or 4 songs that are really good, but just didn’t make it to the album.

M.S: Maybe it’s too soon, but will there be tour plans?

RA:No tour plans. I mean it was part of the deal when I signed, I’ll tour when I can. We’re too busy working with Fates Warning and I’m going to be busy next year with Fates Warning.

M.S: Related question …. is this a project or a band with a possible future?

It’s just a solo album. There is no band, set band, I mean I haven’t thought that far ahead and not thinking, just want to do this now you know. We are writing the new Fates Warning album. I just wanted to do that in that time that I had and move back to my main job, back in the office, with my guys.

M.S: Do you have the idea to continue with solo albums?

R.A: Maybe, yeah. I signed two album deal with InsideOut so maybe there’s another break of time and I’ll do another one. Again, right now the goal is to finish the new Fates Album.

M.S: Are you happy with InsideOut work?

R.A: Yeah! Very much, they’re very cool. they left me alone,They never..what about this? what about this?

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

M.S: Are they stronger with Sony Music alliance?

R.A: Yeah, I think so. I mean Fates Warning worked before and we didn’t have any problems. always very cool to us, really really nice. But you know Fates are back to Metalblade.

M.S: They are very traditional

R.A: Yeah, like a family. Nothing bad with InsideOut, we just had our time them and moved on. They are really kind and really cool to me, all the guys there, very cool. I couldn’t have done without them.

M.S: Many years active, what feedback do you have from your own career, how do you feel?

RA: I don’t know if it’s a career, it’s more of an album. I mean, I think, I said before, you know, Fates is very busy with nine years within releasing an album but you know, was working with Redemption, Fates was still touring. And we did the last two albums in the last five years and we did tour a lot and were really busy. And Jim told me was going to do another Arch/Matheos album, so we’re gonna have a lot of time off, so this is a perfect opportunity, let’s do it while I have this little window. It’s more timing than anything.

M.S: Now we are talking about Fates Warning, the last studio record was “Theories of Flight” from 2016. When will be new record?

R.A: It will on 2020, next year. We’ve been writing since May and we have quite a few songs and a lot we’re still gonna be working on. If things keep going smoothly, as they are, then we should be done with the writing by the end of the year and been on studio in beginning of next year.

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

M.S: How do you manage to live in Madrid and be aware of the group?

RA: We’ve been doing it for years and years,it’s how we write albums. Joey and I live on the same State, both in L.A. He lives 60kms away from me. We see each other all the time. But Bobbie lives in Texas, San Antonio. And Jim lives in New HampshireSo we always see each other when we go on tour, you know. So we’re used to sending files on the internet and that is how Jim and I write albums, is how we have always done it. So for me, to actually move here is no difference, there isn’t any difference.

MS: The technology today is very easy, helps a lot with that.

RA: Yeah yeah

MS: How do you record your voices..

RA: They all go to the studio. They go to an actual studio at the States, the first summer we recorded at Jim’s house at his studio.Theories of Flight we recorded at Joey’s house studio, but that stuff we don’t send it through the internet, we were usually together, one of us has to be together, you know to watch each other, make sure we’re doing the right thing. That was weird for me when I did this solo album, we recorded it here in Madrid with Mike. And you know, everything was done by myself, It was the two of us at the studio everyday, it was weird you know. And he is a really cool guy to work with, and he is very funny because «What do you think about this line?» «I don’t know it’s your album», so it’s always cool but with Fates we do this demo, the song is demo completely from the beginning, all music was done, the solos, the vocals, the harmonies…you know everything was done, we have the demos. So when we get to the studio we know exactly what to do. If there’s a question we go back to the demo and «oh ok». So it’s always good to have one of us in the studio I like that, I need to be focus.

ENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray AdlerENtrevista a Ray Adler

M.S.: In recent years Fates Warning has recorded two live albums, the first «Awaken the Guardian Live» 2017. Awaken was the tribute to that album with its original line up and with John Arch singing. Now the bands bring the singers together for tours. Would you like a tour together with John Arch?

RA: I wouldn’t say no. It would be a lot of work for the other guys, I don’t think the other guys will go for it, because you know two hours it’s a long time to play. And if it’s both of us is gonna be three hours.

M.S.: Last year “Live over Europe”2018 was the last release of the band. Is this live album closing a stage?

RA: You know it was more like…ok. With the last two albums in the last five years, is the most we worked in a long time and we worked quite sure of what we wanna do. Jim wasn’t sure if he wants to write another album. At the end of Theories of Flight we end our contract with InsideOut, we were free to do whatever we want. Jim and I talked and asked when are we going to start the next album. And he said «I don’t know if there’s gonna be another album» and I was like «Oh…really». So I didn’t bring up that again really. And then we talked about it again and I asked why he didn’t know and he just wanted to figure out what he wanna do in life. I don’t if that makes sense. So I just let him be and and a few months later he said that wanted to write another album. I’m ready so let’s do it.So we signed with Metalblade and here we are, with a new album. But again, Theories wasn’t a door closing. We were doing very well live.a lot of people and we just thought «just let’s do this now»ENtrevista a Ray Adler

M.S.: I remember the evolution of Fates Warning, the first record with Arch and your entry in “No exit” with sounds like Iron Maiden, but in “Perfect Symmetry” Fates Warning creates a new style and follow that path until today. You are one of the pillars of prog rock, one of the first groups to mix porgressive with metal, being a reference for many bands. I think it’s something that makes you proud…

RA: yeah, we hear it all the time and it’s funny. It’s funny that we have that recognition but we have never been that big of a band. You know what I mean, we kinda like to stay in the middle, we never reach above or below. But it’s an honor thought to be one of the predecessors of what is prog metal I guess. It’s a naive feeling.

MS: But it’s real, I remember in the 80’s appeared Queensrÿche but the evolution of prog metal, Fates Warning arrived the first.Queensrÿche is more commercial.

RA: yeah yeah.

MS: Parallels is after, but in Perfect Symmetry you have that metal prog.

RA: yeah It was a trippy album, you know, part of the machine, sound like that, you never gonna hear that again in radio. It was just…I was an interesting album, not a lot of people like it because they were expecting «No exit part II» and then we came with «Perfect Symmetry»and, you know, we have a fan club, in the old days, and one guy wrote to us and send us back the album, he doesn’t want to have it anymore and send it like «Perfuck Sickmetry». and that was a letter a remember like..»Perfuck Sickmetry…ah that makes sense» (laughs)But, you know, for us was a stepping up point to do something different. And again «A Pleasant Shade of Gray» was album we did for ourselves, cause Parallels was a successful album, the most we ever had. And then after that «Inside Out» kinda confused and low on when we want to go, you know…

MS: I like this album!

RA: a lot of people do but to us…we were just a little confused. And then, when we came the time to do the next album Jim said:I’m gonna write this album, is gonna be one long song, screw radio, screw whatever let’s just see what happens

MS: «A Pleasant Shade of Gray» is art

RA: It’s my favourite, I think is the favourite album I ever did.

MS: It’s different from the rest of the albums.

RA: It is! And It was great that we went on tour and played that fucking album, the whole thing, all the way through 51 minutes every night. It’s a really good tour, you know, we did a lot of touring with that album. But you know, to me it made it special, that our band not disrespect the people, but we write music that makes us happy, that we like, something we would listen to, short to speak.

M.S.: I want to know about Redemption, I don ?t understand why you haven’t sung on his last album…

RA:well, I mean, It came down to, you know. Fates haven’t done albums in nine years, we were touring but we weren’t that busy so I had that time, and Nicholas was a friend of mine, and still be. And you know, maybe you wanna sing in my new album, I think he didn’t offer. I’ll do the job.And it was fun, I think I did four, five albums, I can’t remember how many I do. But you know, it was a lot of fun and I had the time to do it. and again, in the last five years we were so busy with everything, last two albums that we did, that I just wanted to focus all my energy on Fates Warning, do live shows and be, you know, with my band. Because it’s difficult. Bobby and the timewas in two different ENtrevista a Ray Adlerbands (Halford and Sebastian Bach) and Joey is in Armored Saint, and he’s playing in two or three other bands in L.A.he is writing, he is an engineer. So in order to Fates Warning to go on the road we had to contact each other like 5 or 6 months in advance and say «this is what we are thinking, what is your schedule?» And one guy would go out and say «I’m busy doing this…» «ok, let’s try in a few months, what do you think?» «no, I’m busy» «I’m free..» you know. That’s the problem with everybody been in different bands. I didn’t want to be part of that problem as well with «I’m going to be on the road with Redemption or I’ll be tracking an album» You know what I meanI wanted to focus all my energy with Fates and that was how it came, I was sad to go, you know, It wasn’t very happy for me either but I have to go where my heart had to be, and was with this band. I think I did the right move because Fates is doing really well and we are doing another album now. And Redemption sounds great Tom does an amazing job, they don’t need me.

M.S.: It is possible that in the future you will be the voice of Redemption again?

R.A: Tom is a good singer. You know Nick wrote all those melodies are Nick.

M.S.: I have in my mind Engine, One of your projects from the late nineties. What memories do you have of that experience?

RA: It was fun, a great time. Bernie and I were just sitting in his bedroom in L.A. and just write music, that’s what I remember. It was cool, I had a good time. And the way it really came about, Bernie and I writing songs, I had this idea, we had two songs written and I talked to Brian «Hey man, I’m thinking about doing a solo album, solo project. would you be interested?» And he was like «yeah yeah gimme like three songsand I’ll check it out» and I thought «fuck! I only have two» and said «ok!» and said Bernie we need to write another song. So we sat down in his room that night and we wrote the «falling star» and recorded it the next day and put it on the demo. So that was really funny. We need another song and we did in 24 hours, from beginning to end. And then, you know, we recorded the album at Bill’s place, its studio, Mark Sanders studio, he still has it now, but not a rehearsal, now it’s all rooms with producers. And we recorded it there and it was fun. You know, Joey was the engineer, any play base, so everyday was «let’s go to the studio and had some fun» Nothing like Fates Warning, we are very serious in the studio with Engine I think we had beers and stuff lying around.

M.S: It was an adventure.

R.A: yeah! It was fun, I still love it but at the time I was in the Deftones and sound like that. So I wanted something heavy, and show a different side. And now it’s cool that’s what I remember. We did a small tour in L.A., two weeks or something and we were in a van or trailer which I’ve never done. I’ve always been in buses. It was like my first van tour and the first two days I was like «this is awesome! It’s so fun» and after three days I was «THIS SUCKS!I can’t sleep, nobody sleep. Fuck this, I’m never gonna do this again» But it was an experience and I would never take it back. It was cool.

M.S: Thank you for everything, we have reached the end … if you want to say something that has not been said this is the time … good luck with that new album.

R.A: Muchas gracias! (in spanish)
