-“A light in the dark” es vuestra presentación al mundo.

"My banda favorita es Slipknot.

ENGLISH VERSION

Greetings from Spain. How are you? It is very difficult to find a bunch of young guys that dare to start with progressive metal. Can you tell us how you met and started the band and how the name came up?

I met Kris and Ryland back in first grade, we were in a program called Spanish Immersion, where we were taught our class in Spanish all the way to middle school. There were tons of kids that played instruments and I actually formed many band back when I was really young, but Kris and Ryland were the only other kids that wanted to do progressive metal, so I stuck with. We met Thomas in sixth grade and he was a big Prog Metal fan as well so we decided to form a band. The name took a while to figure out. We had a bunch of different name ideas but they were all taken already. We finally found a cool name that we all liked and wasn’t taken and it was Next To None.

It is impressive how being so young you show in your debut a great playing technique and quite a considerable level of writing creativity. Tell us about your experience and how you have come to develop such abilities in such a short time.

Well, I have been playing drums since I was about 5 years old, and growing up surrounded to drums and music was super helpful. Its the same with everyone else in the band as well, we all started at a very young age and it really does help.

You toured with Haken and Adrenaline Mob among others when your album was yet to be released. Did you see yourselves touring as a way of life? Any anecdote you can share?

Touring with those bands was absolutely incredible! Both bands treated us like we were professionals and they were super nice. Touring really taught me many things about the music industry and was an amazing experience. I definitely would enjoy being able to tour for the rest of my live and play for all our fans and friends, its so amazing to be able to do that!

“A light in the dark” is your introduction to the world. How would you define it?

I think the album is really great for our first album. I think it should be listened to as a whole from start to finish as one whole piece. I would describe it as really heavy prog music, almost like Slipknot meets Dream Theater!

The album has been released by Inside Out thus you have become member of a big family of progressive sounds. Do you have any feedback of how the album is doing?

The reviews on the album and the feedback from the fans has been incredible! we have gotten so much love and support and we are super grateful for it, and we hope we can continue making great music that our fans can enjoy! Its also great to be a part of the Inside Out Family!

When listening to the album we perceive Max’s obvious presence, a high playing ability, choruses with great appeal and voices that become aggressive at times. As a result of this combination it emerges a very fresh and original sound that distinguishes you from the rest. Do you have a clear and definite direction about how you want to sound?

We are really just writing whatever flows and feels and sounds right. We have influences ranging from Slipknot to Dream Theater to Metallica to Lamb Of God so we really kind of mashed all those influences into one style and added our own style along to it, which really made a cool unique sound.

Your debut features big appearances such as Bumblefoot or Neal Morse. How did these collaborations come up?

Well, we needed a guitar solo for A Lonely walk and my dad brought up the idea of getting a guest to do a solo for the piece and we threw around some ideas of who we could get and Bumblefoot was the one we really wanted for the part, and thankfully he said he would do it, and it came out perfect! Neal Morse’s apperarance came from us needing a melotron sound. We couldn’t find the perfect melotron sound on Thomas’s keyboard so my dad thought of asking Neal what sounds he used to try and get them on Thomas’s keyboard, but then we thought why not just get Neal to do it himself. He came through and did the part and it turned out beautiful!

Next to None has a luxury godfather, Mike Portnoy, who has produced the album. Somehow he has contributed to the album since Max has inherited his genes. As Mike has already said, he is the first one to be impressed by your work. It has been rewarding to count on the support and advice of someone so brilliant and with so much experience, hasn’t it?

I’m very grateful to have supportive parents. Ive grown up watching my dad play drums so that really inspired me to play drums myself. I hope my dad will produce future albums, because it was a blast to have him in the studio!

The writing process and the lyrics come from your minds. Can you tell how you worked and organized yourselves?

We write the music before the vocals, usually Thomas or I will bring in an idea and we start jamming to it and working off of it, and it evolves into a full length song. After the music is completed, Thomas would think of some vocal melodies and lyrics and then we put it all together.

It is natural that musicians are influenced by other musicians and take them as references. What are your main musical influences? What are your favorite bands?

My all time favorite band is Slipknot, I’m obsessed with them and can name every song! My second favorite band would be Lamb Of God and then probably Metallica. I grew up listening to Dream Theater, so they play a large part in my style as well.

You have played live several times this year. I remember your tour opening for Haken and there will be more shows in the USA for the rest of 2015. What are the plans for 2016? Do you consider the leap to Europe?

We hope one day soon we will be able to play in Europe, but currently we are just going to be playing in the US. We have two tours coming up, one opening for Fates Warning in October and then another tour with our friends in the band A.D.D. In November, and we would be playing shows in the New York area and maybe Canada. As far as 2016 goes, we might try and start recording our next album! Check us out on Facebook and Twitter or at nexttonone.net for show dates and updates!

We have reached the end of the interview. Thanks for answering our questions. You have our website at your disposal if you want to address your Spanish fans.
