M.S.-¿Tienes pensado algún proyecto con “Jesus Christ the exorcist”?. ¿Te lo has planteado?

M.S.-En tu extensa carrera musical has afrontados muchos y variados proyectos y de diversos estilos.

¡Estad atentos!

¡¡Gracias!!

Lo siento responderos tan tarde! Han sido unos días ocupados.Que Dios te bendiga.

M.S.- Hello Neal, it’s a pleasure to talk to you again. How are you doing?

I am doing great! All kinds of really cool things going on. Actually, I am flying this morning to New York City to play with flying colors there tonight. Should be great

M.S.- Tell us about the ideas and thinking process that led you to compose "Jesus Christ the Exorcist".

Well, the first thing that happened was that a friend of mine called me and had just listened to Jesus Christ superstar and was super excited saying that he thought that I should do my own kind of version of a musical based on the Gospels. He told me I had to do it! I laughed and told him I would pray about it.

Which I did. Then after a few weeks I felt some of the inside saying yes you should do that. This was many years ago now… I think 2008 or somewhere around there… And so I wrote the first draft of it in a few months… It was a great thing that I had time between albums just then… And, I think I spent about a month working on the demos as well, and that completed the first draft which I then gave over to that same guy, Michael Caplan, to shop to Broadway producers. He shopped it all around and found a lot of interested parties and people really loved it, but nobody put up the money to actually produce it. Then I moved on to other projects and JCE sat dormant for many years.

Then, in 2018, I decided to put it on at my yearly festival in Tennessee called Morse Fest and miraculously at that same time Michael called with a record deal offer from Frontiers. it was really amazing because I was just starting to do a rewrite when Michael called to tell me about this possible record deal. It was very providential and amazing. And that’s what led to the current version that you have in your hands today.

M.S.- Jesus Christ the Exorcist was presented in Morsefest 2018 before the Album came out. Will you be editing that footage in audio and video formats as you did in the past, so we can enjoy a live version of your work?

Oh yes! It was filmed with a lot of cameras and will be coming out for sure next year. It was an amazing performance if I do say so myself… The whole cast, Ted Leonard, Talon David, Nick D’Virgilio… Etc., did such an amazing job I can’t wait to share with you!

M.S.- Let’s talk about the collaborations in this album. On the music side you get together with the members of the Neal Morse Band except for Mike. Eric Gillette’s drumming is surprising. He demonstrates his skill as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and shows that his style has been influenced by Mr. Portnoy. Would you agree?

Oh yeah, Eric is ridiculous. It’s insane how good he is at so many different instruments. And he sings great! It’s just not fair. 🙂

M.S.- Something I find interesting is that you have composed, written and produced the Album in its entirety, and yet your vocal presence doesn’t seem to be at the center of it all. Why was Ted Leonard’s voice the best choice for the Jesus part?

One of the things that was really fun for me about writing JCE, was that I didn’t have to write for my vocal range. Much of the time when I’m writing I’m writing music that I can sing. But, with JCE, I could go outside of that and write melodies that great singers that sing on Broadway every day can sing. so, I didn’t sing much on it because I wrote everything out of my range! The only part I can even come close to is the part of Pontius Pilate which is the role that I sang. The Lord blessed us with a lot of amazing singers like Ted and the rest of the cast that did such a wonderful job bringing this musical to life!

M.S.- Speaking about the vocalists in the Album, you managed to reunite a large cast of well-known singers in it: Nick D’Virgilio, Rick Florian, etc… but you also introduced Talon David, who we didn’t know about and we think she did a good job. Can you tell us more about her?

Talon was actually my wife’s idea. I have been trying to cast the role of Mary for months actually. And it was about five weeks before the performance had to happen and I still didn’t have anyone cast! Pretty scary. My wife thought of Talon who had been in some shows with my kids at their school. At first I thought, oh, she’s too young and inexperienced, but then, I remembered that she was going to college and in the theater department at a really good school downtown and, because I only had five weeks left I decided to give her a try. I sent her the track for "woman of seven Devils" and she sent back a video of her singing it and I thought OK well that’s it she’s doing great!
She brought so much to the role! Wait to you see the video of the actual performance. She really brought a lot of emotion and beauty to it. What a fight!

M.S.- Are you thinking about any project related to the live performance of "Jesus Christ the Exorcist"? It being a musical inherently gives it a lot of potential for its presentation in theaters. I understand it would be very difficult to gather both musicians and singers, but after some casting the right people for the parts could be found. Have you thought about going forward with any of this?

We would love to put this on around the world! I am just praying and waiting for the right doors to open. Hopefully it won’t take 10 years like last time! 🙂

M.S.- During your extensive musical career you have been involved in many different projects spanning different styles. Your solo projects, your band, your involvement in projects like Transatlantic, Flying Colors, etc… now you surprise us with a musical. What other projects left for you to explore excite you in the foreseeable future?

Well, there will be a new transatlantic next year as most people already know! I actually have a couple other musicals that I’ve written that I think a very good that I’d love to see get out there someday. And who knows what God has in store in his miraculous future!

M.S.- You are currently working on the newest Flying Colors release. What can you tell us about it?

Well, now that album is actually been released and I can tell you that it’s great! I think it’s a little heavier than some of our previous albums, but has the same quality songwriting and musicianship you can expect from FC.

M.S.- Can we expect a Flying Colors tour after the release of the Album?

We only have a few dates that were able to play as we are playing around Steve Morse’s schedule with deep purple. so we have four shows in Europe in December and that will be it as far as I know. so make the journey and come see us because it’ll be worth it!

M.S.- Let’s talk about Morsefest, an event that has been taking place for the last five years, and this year will see its sixth. This is a personal event where we see you enjoy with your family, friends and fans intensely. What have you got prepared for the 2019 edition?

Well as you already know we had flying colors one night in the Neal Morse band doing the final performance of the great adventure on the second night. Amazing!

M.S.- Morsefest is a celebration of Neal Morse and his entire career. Until now, every single edition of the festival has taken place in the USA. Have you considered organizing two festivals a year, one in America and another one in Europe?

We are considering that. Stay tuned!

M.S.- Regarding the Neal Morse Band, what are your thoughts after "The Great Adventure" and its successful tour? Is there a cycle being closed after the last two concept albums?

Well, mainly because of the activity of the other bands that we are in, it feels to me like a good time to take a short rest from NMB. But I’m sure will be back soon! What an amazing band!

M.S.- We can’t miss the opportunity to ask you about Transatlantic and a new release from this supergroup in the horizon. Are there any plans for this?

Yes, we just got through recording and mainly writing a new album in Sweden. Look for it next year!

Thank you so much and may the Lord bless you as well!
