Within Temptation Live

¿solo vendréis a festivales?

Within Temptation Live

Within Temptation LiveWithin Temptation LiveWithin Temptation LiveWithin Temptation Live

Cuidaros mucho.

(Sharon)¡Muchísimas gracias a vosotros!

ENGLISH VERSION

Last week, we had the opportunity to hold an interview via Skype with Sharon den Adel, Singer of the Dutch band Within Temptation. It was a relaxed and very entertaining conversation about the band’s beginnings, the present situation with the pandemic, future plans and several anecdotes. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

First of all, how are you? How have you handled the confinement? Any new hobbies you’ve discovered in the lockdown? Or anything new you’ve discovered about yourself during confinement? Maybe you’ve learnt some Spanish…

(Sharon) Good morning, we’re fine thanks; I hope you are fine too. Well, the lockdown has given us all time: time for ourselves, time to do playlists (not just metal, but also rock or other musical genres) which you normally have to do in 10 minutes, time to do some fitness (and the playlists are a great help for this), also the home-schooling… Now that the kids could go back to school everything seems to go back to normal somehow.

It’s true. In my case I was always running from one place to another with my two jobs, and thanks to this situation I think I appreciate more having time for myself as you just said.

(Sharon) Exactly, we appreciate things that we used to take for granted before, and of course telework is of great help to handle both your job and your personal life, and enjoy having time for yourself and your loved ones.

Concerning the band’s beginnings, we know it’s been asked in some interviews, but as far as we can recall it’s never been fully answered… where does the name WITHIN TEMPTATION come from? After all these years, are you happy with the name or do you think there’s a better or more suitable name for the band?

(Sharon) The band was in a very delicate situation at that time, I liked the word TEMPTATION, and it felt like it matched that situation. Then someone suggested the word WITHIN, which sounded better than INTO («Into Temptation» was what we wanted to express out of the mentioned situation). There was also a song I liked a lot at the time called «Temptation», so it also had to do with this. Moreover, if you notice the pronunciation of WITHIN TEMPTATION is not the proper way to say it, the stress in WITHIN is misplaced, which adds a poetic tone to it all.

You’ve been in the music business a long time, is there any advice you would give your younger self?

(Sharon) I think I’d say to myself to not be afraid to go for what I really loved which was music, but to have a backup plan. It’s what we actually did: I have a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Management and Robert did Human Resources Management.

Your first albums have been released in vinyl in your store, which is a great success in my opinion, and it allows the audience to enjoy the grandeur of your earlier songs with an incredible sound quality. A frequent complaint is that the shipping is very high as they are sent from the UK which is outside Europe. Thankfully the more recent albums are easier to find. Do you know if this issue will be unified, making your discography more accessible to everyone? Are you a vinyl person? Are you glad that vinyl is a trend?

(Sharon) I’m definitely a vinyl person. I knew about our merchandising being sent from the UK, but had no idea about this issue with the shipment. Let me look into it and see what we can do to get a more standard price.

I’m sure the fans will appreciate it, thank you. After Black Symphony (which is one of the best symphonic concerts that has been held), several collaborations (Tarja, Xzibit, Anders, etc), vast tours, selling so many records… is there anything you haven’t done that you are looking forward to? Any milestone you’re excited about?

(Sharon) Honestly I think we’ve done everything we wanted up to date, so I can’t think of anything. And as you just said, we have done several collaborations, and that is something very interesting as a musician, it lets you explore other areas, other genres. I’d say what we want is to be able to keep doing music, which is what we love, and it’s wonderful we get to do it after all these years and we want to continue.

Within Temptation LiveWithin Temptation LiveWithin Temptation Live

Later this year, your Mother Earth album will be turning 20 years old. Looking back, do you still enjoy playing songs from that album and is there anything you wish you have done differently whilst making it?

(Sharon) It’s been a while for sure! I really like playing those songs, and I know fans love them too, so I really enjoy doing it. Something that I would change? The WIG in the cover! At the time I loved Kirsten Dunst’s look on INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, and wanted to somehow imitate it, but it didn’t come out that way I expected hahaha Maybe I should have done a bit more research on that before wearing it, because the length wasn’t right, the bangs were not quite the same…

Personally, I think the wig is iconic, I can’t imagine Mother Earth’s cover without it, hahaha.

(Sharon) Hahaha, yeah, it’s true.

within1within9within10

Now coming back to present times, in both «Entertain You» and «Resist» it seems like the lyrics are more straight forward than in previous albums, do you agree? Is this intentional? Or did it just come out that way…

(Sharon) Well, we’ve always been inspired by historic, politics, social problems, and we’ve always wanted to tell things related to those topics. Now we have the feeling that we need to be more straight forward in what we want to say, so yes, it is totally intentional that the lyrics are like this.

These new songs follow a style you started with «The Unforgiving» and continued to explore in «Hydra» and ultimately «Resist» as we’ve just commented on. Do you consider this as the natural evolution of the band? Symphonic sounds are not likely to return to WT? More orchestra, choirs, solos…

(Sharon) We love symphonic, and we don’t rule out using symphonic sounds in the future, but for the time being we intend to follow this more straight forward tone we were just talking out. But yes, in the future we might add more symphonic sounds, but not the same as before, but in a different way or something.

Because of COVID-19, there seems to be a trend of releasing songs and eventually put them together in an album. Is this something you’re considering? What do you think of this system? Do you think social media has influenced the way we consume music and our need to constantly want something new and has made people have less patience waiting for albums? Do you think this system ends the surprise factor of listening to all songs together at once while discovering amazing tunes? Which do you prefer: releasing all songs at once in an album or individually as singles? And considering the tour has been postponed until next year, are you considering releasing songs to finally have a new record for when the tour will be held?

(Sharon) The truth is that having the idea of the tour with Evanescence in mind we decided to release a few songs before the concerts so we could add some new songs to the set list, and of course those new tunes would be into a future new album. Right now we’re writing new stuff, and again thanks to all the time we’ve had because of the pandemic, but we still don’t know how many songs we’ll release or when will you listen to them.

Any idea as to when the next single will be released?

(Sharon) We don’t know yet, we’re still writing, and we’d like to release one or two songs this year, a few more the next one.

Within Temptation Live

I don’t know if you can answer to this, because it might not depend on you, but the WORLDS COLLIDE tour is not coming to Madrid, only Evanescence are performing here as their end of tour, but not Within Temptation, why is that?

(Sharon) I think Evanescence added the date in Madrid after the tour was announced, and we already had a previous engagement for the day, but I’m not sure. Anyway, we have a date in Spain, with Iron Maiden, so we hope to see you there!

In fact, recalling your last visits to Spain, you came to Barcelona Metal Fest and more recently you played at Resurrection Fest… does this mean we’ll see you only at festivals in our country?

(Sharon) We really like going to festivals, we’ve played several in Spain these past years, and it’s true it’s been a while since we didn’t have our own tour in your country. But we love Spain, it’s our second home, we normally spend some days in the summer every year (we’re checking these days every now and then to see whether we can go), and we certainly miss playing these, so hopefully when all this situation ends we might go play some shows in Spain. We love Spanish culture and people, you all are very nice, warm and enthusiastic.

Talking about Spain, do you remember any funny anecdote in your concerts here?

(Sharon) I remember a showcase we did in Madrid several years ago; it was a very small venue, roughly a 100 people, not much space. We did the sound check and all was good, but right at the beginning of the show the lights went out, the music started to play, and we were supposed to be on stage, but we didn’t see anything on our way out. Robert fell, and when I noticed I couldn’t stop laughing, but I really felt bad because it looked like I didn’t care, but I did! It was very funny, he just stood up, said «I’m fine!», and we had to start over again.

I have an anecdote from the very same day, it was the second time I saw you live, it was 2005 at the Joy Slava venue, me and my friends had been waiting outside for several hours, and then you and Robert arrived. We got to talk to you for a while and suddenly you noticed I was wearing a NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS pin, and you got all excited because you loved the movie.

(Sharon) It’s true! I remember that at the time it was just a few months since I discovered the movie, which had been out for a few years by then, but I was totally obsessed with it. I bought tons of t-shirts for me, for Robert, a lot of other stuff all related to the movie.

Due to the COVID situation, the music industry has come to a complete standstill and obviously lots of musicians and crews have been economically impacted by this. Have you guys also been affected in this way? Is there any ways or things fans can do to help you and your crew out?

(Sharon) The situation right now is not good, it’s very complicated, and music just like many other areas have suffered a lot of job losses. The best this people can do right now to support music is to hold on to their tickets. Many concerts have been rescheduled, and it would really help if people could still attend the new dates. We know that changing dates means some people won’t be able to go, and if they can’t it’s ok, but it would be really helpful, not only for the bands, but for the venues, the crew… And also, using any streaming device. It all counts, even if it is a small input.

I think it’s safe to say that WT fans are one of the most loyal fandom: many have been following you for a long time; they go to several concerts and are supportive in many ways. How do you feel about this?

(Sharon) It certainly is the best compliment a musician can get, and we are very grateful for all the love and support from our fans.

Last but not least, a few rapid fire questions we’re sure the fans will like, no need to get into great details:

Do you sing in the shower? What’s your favourite song to sing while showering?

(Sharon) Yes, the acoustic is perfect! FASTER for example is a perfect one, it has a soft beginning and it gets more powerful as it goes on, so I can warm up my vocal chords.

Tell us a musical guilty pleasure you’re ashamed to confess

(Sharon)When you reach a certain age, you are not embarrassed anymore, so there’s nothing that I listen to that can’t be confessed. It comes to my mind a memory of when I was 4 years old and we were living in Indonesia, my parents loved music, and GREASE movie just came out, and I loved the soundtrack. It’s still stuck in my mind and I sing it sometimes.

Within Temptation Live

We’ve seen you have quite a liking for wine, is there any Spanish wine you like?

(Sharon) Hahaha, Rioja for sure.

I’ll be attending the WORLDS COLLIDE tour with some friends, and a few of them have a VIP ticket. I’ll pass this information onto them.

(Sharon) Great! I’ll see you there then! Let me know of the date and we can have another interview there 🙂

Within Temptation LiveWithin Temptation LiveWithin Temptation LiveWithin Temptation Live

Your birthday is very close (July 12th), and last year you celebrated it with a concert in your hometown Soest, how was the experience? Anything special planned for this year?

(Sharon) It’s true; last year was very special because I could celebrate it in my hometown, in Royal Park, in the palace’s gardens. It was so beautiful; I would stare at the windows of the palace and marvel at the view and think of the history of the place… This year we didn’t celebrate any birthdays, so I feel like mine shouldn’t be any different, so we won’t be doing anything special.

By the way, happy early birthday! Mine was last week, and I agree with you. We didn’t do anything special, this year is extraordinary enough by itself and we will remember it.

(Sharon) Thank you! And happy belated birthday to you! Yes, this year will be difficult to forget…

Within Temptation Live

Thank you very much Sharon, if there’s anything you would like to say to your Spanish fans, please feel free. We wish you stay safe and healthy, and see you soon when this entire situation is done. Take good care.

(Sharon) Thank you very much! Take care, and as soon as this is all over we’ll see you son in Spain with Iron Maiden.
