M.S: Hola, gracias por contestar a nuestras preguntas. ¿Cómo estás?
Slava: Hola, estoy bien, gracias.
M.S: Como todavía no habéis tocado en España, ¿podríais presentaros a nuestros lectores? Dinos algo sobre cuándo y cómo se formó el grupo, vuestra situación actual y trabajo…
Slava: Operatika se creó en 2002 de manos de Bill (guitarra), Yuri (batería) y Slava (vocalista). Mezclando fuertes riffs de guitarra, rápidos movimientos de batería, y voces femeninas creamos nuestro primer par de temas. Anna (teclado) se unió a nosotros algún tiempo después y tuvimos algunos bajistas muy Buenos con nosotros hasta encontrarnos con Ray a primeros de 2011. Nuestro EP de 2005 “Dreamworld” tuvo muy buena acogida y nos consiguió un pequeño contrato con una discográfica. Mientras trabajábamos en nuestro primer disco, “The Calling”, nuestro amigo Mike LePond de Symphony X aceptó grabar todas las partes del bajo en ese disco.
“The Calling” vio la luz en Europa a finales de 2008 y más tarde en Japón, atrayendo nuevos fans de todo el mundo. Actualmente nos encontramos trabajando en nuestro Segundo álbum y tenemos mucho material para ello.
M.S: Si alguien quisiera recopilar información vuestra, ¿dónde podrían escucharos o comprar vuestros discos?
Slava: Operatika tiene página en Facebook y en Myspace. También tenemos nuestro propio website: www.operatika.com. La información acerca de poder escuchar y comprar nuestra música se puede encontrar en esas páginas o contactando directamente con el grupo en: [email protected].
M.S: ¿Cómo se puso en contacto con vosotros la organización de MFVF? ¿Les enviasteis primero vuestro material?, u ¿os llamaron? Estoy seguro de que estáis más que orgullosos por participar en este festival que se celebra cada año, ¿verdad?
Slava: Si, les mandamos nuestra petición de poder tocar en el MFVF y estuvimos muy entusiasmados cuando obtuvimos su respuesta. Estamos muy orgullosos y muy contentos de que nuestro primer concierto en Europa sea en este gran evento.
M.S: Hoy en día, ¿diríais que tener mujeres en un grupo de metal os deja en un segundo puesto respecto al resto de grupos de la escena del metal? Quiero decir, en el resto de los festivales de metal nos podemos encontrar sólo 2 ó 3 mujeres al frente de grupos. ¿Consideráis que MFVF es una buena forma, para grupos como el vuestro, de tener la oportunidad de tocar en grandes escenarios?
Slava: Hasta cierto punto, si, los grupos de metal liderados por féminas todavía son una minoría en la escena musical actual. Estoy de acuerdo con que tener un festival especialmente dedicado a grupos de este estilo ayuda a presentar y a atraer la atención hacia ellos por parte de fans del metal de todo el mundo.
M.S: MFVF se caracteriza principalmente por contratar grupos de diferentes países para que vayan a tocar a Bélgica, ¿cómo es la escena del metal en vuestro país? ¿Recomendáis algunas bandas a nuestros lectores?
Slava; La escena del metal en USA tiene mucha mezcla. Desafortunadamente, mucha de ella está aún considerada como underground pero está creciendo cada año. Cada vez más estaciones de radio que tienen programas dedicados al metal están presentando una mayor variedad en el género. También, muchos grupos están viniendo a USA desde otros países de todo el mundo, porque se está creando una importante base de fans. Si lo comparamos con Europa o America Latina, todavía es más difícil que los grupos de metal tengan promoción en los Estados Unidos pero estamos trabajando en ello y la verdad que apreciamos mucho todo el apoyo de los fans.
M.S: Estaréis en la novena edición de MFVF, ¿qué grupos os gustaría ver?
Slava: Estaremos en el festival los 3 días y esperamos poder ver todas las actuaciones que podamos. A mí personalmente me encantaría ver a DORO de nuevo (acabamos de ser sus teloneros en Nueva York), a Leave’s Eyes, a Xandria, a Amaranthe, a Trail of Tears, a Therion y a muchos otros.
M.S: Con respecto a vuestra actuación, ¿qué se va a encontrar el público en el escenario?
Slava: Creo que cada directo tiene su personalidad, dependiendo del público y de los grupos que toquen. Yo creo que no dejamos de evolucionar en nuestra presencia en el scenario cada vez que tocamos, y esperamos poder mostrar a nuestro público de los que Operatika es capaz.
M.S: Supongo que vais a tocar canciones de vuestro primer disco “The Calling ”, ¿qué nos podéis contar de él?
Slava: Si, la mayoría de nuestro setlist incluirá canciones de “The Calling”, pero también habrá material Nuevo que podremos mostrar sobre cómo va a sonar nuestro próximo disco.
M.S:Este disco se grabó hace 3 años, ya estáis pensando en grabar otro? Tenéis listo nuevo material? Podremos oír algo en el MFVF?
Slava; Si, sabemos que nuestro público está hambriento de más y hemos estado trabajando duro en el Nuevo material en estos dos años anteriores. La escena del metal en USA es muy diferente de la de Europa, así que es difícil conseguir la misma promoción o el apoyo económico. Además tampoco tuvimos un bajista a tiempo complete, y aunque Mike LePond de Symphony X es un buen amigo que grabó y tocó con nosotros cuando él podía, hemos estado buscando un miembro permanente. Actualmente estamos en la pre-producción de nuestro siguiente disco, ¡así que permaneced atentos para saber más!
M.S: ¿Qué le diríais a la gente que va a asistir al festival?
Slava: A los que van a estar allí, les diría “¡os lo vais a pasar EN GRANDE!”. El festival tiene un cartel impresionante con mucha mezcla de diferentes géneros y sonidos de metal. Como grupo, realmente lo estamos esperando, y poder conectar y conocer a muchos fans. Como fans de otras bandas, estamos muy emocionados de poder conocer y apoyar a otros músicos.
M.S: Después del festival, ¿Cuáles son vuestros proyectos más inmediatos?
Slava: ¡Definitivamente nuestro próximo disco!

M.S: Hi, thank you for answering our questions. How are you?
Slava: Hello, doing well, thank you.
M.S: As you haven’t played in Spain yet, could you introduce yourselves to our readers? Tell us something about when and how the band was formed, your present situation and work…
Slava: Operatika was created in 2002 by Bill (guitars), Yuri (drums) and Slava (vocals). Mixing together furious guitar riffs, fast double-kick drums, and female vocals we created our first couple of songs. Anna (keys) joined us sometime later and we had a few good bass players with us over time until we met Ray in early 2011. Our 2005 EP “Dreamworld” was very well received and got us a small record deal. While we were working on our first album “The Calling”, our friend Mike LePond of Symphony X agreed to record all bass tracks on that record.
“The Calling” was released in Europe in late 2008 and later in Japan attracting new fans from all over the world. We are currently working on our 2nd album and have a lot of material for that.
M.S: If someone wants to gather info about you, where could they listen to you or buy your albums?
Slava: Operatika has accounts on facebook and myspace. We also have our own website: www.operatika.com. Information regarding listening and purchasing our music could be found on those websites or by contacting the band directly at [email protected].
M.S: How did the MFVF organization get in touch with you? Did you send them first your material? Or did they call you? I’m sure you’ll be more than proud participating in this festival which is held every year, right?
Slava: yes, we submitted our request to play at MFVF and were really excited when we got a response. We are very proud and happy that our first European live performance is going to take place at this great event.
M.S: Nowadays, would you say that having women in a metal band leaves you in a second place concerning the rest of the bands in the metal scene? I mean, in the rest of the metal festivals you can find only 2 or 3 women fronted bands. Do you consider MFVF as a good way for bands like yours to have the chance to play in big venues?
Slava: To a degree, yes, female-fronted metal bands are still a minority in today’s music scene. I agree that having a fest specifically dedicated to bands like this really helps to present and draw attention to them from metal fans all over the world.
M.S: MFVF is characterized mainly in hiring bands from so many different countries to come and play in Belgium, how’s the metal scene in your country? Would you recommend any bands for our readers?
Slava; Metal scene in the USA is very mixed. Most of it, unfortunately, is still considered underground but it’s growing and getting bigger every year. More metal radio station shows are starting to play more variety of metal. Also, more bands are starting to come over from other countries to the US because of the growing fan base. Still, comparing to Europe or Latin America, it is much harder for metal bands to get promoted in the US but we are working hard on that and appreciate all the support from our fans.
M.S: You’ll be at the nine edition of MFVF, which bands would you like to see?
Slava: we will be at the fest for all 3 days and hope to catch as many performances as we can. I’d love to see DORO again (we just opened for her in NYC), Leave’s Eyes, Xandria, Amaranthe, Trail of Tears, Therion and many more.
M.S: Concerning your show, what can the audience find on stage?
Slava: I think each show has its own personality depending on the crowd and bands playing. I find that we continue to evolve our stage presence every time we play and hope that we will be able to show our audience what Operatika is all about.
M.S: I guess you are playing tracks from your first album “The Calling”, what could you tell us about it?
Slava: Yes, majority of our set will include songs from The Calling but we are also bringing some new material with us to show the audience what our new album will sound like.
M.S: This album was recroded 3 years ago, haven’t you thought about recording a new one soon? Do you already have new material? Will we be able to listen to new stuff at MFVF?
Slava; Yes, we know that our fans are hungry for more and we have been working hard on new material over the last couple of years. The metal scene in US is very different from Europe so it’s difficult to get the same promotion and financial support. We also didn’t have a full time bass player and while Mike LePond of Symphony X is a good friend who recorded and played with us when he was available, we had to keep looking for a permanent member. We are currently in the pre-production stage for our next record, so stay tuned for more news on that!
M.S: What would you say people to attend the festival?
Slava: To those who will attend, I would say “you’ll have a GREAT time!” The fest has a great line up with a mix of different metal genres and sounds. As a band, we are really looking forward to connect and meet new fans; as fans of other bands we are excited to support and meet other musicians.
M.S: After the festival, which are your more immediate projects?
Slava: definitely our next record!
