Daniel Flores and Angelica Rylin – The Murder of my sweet –

Daniel Flores and Angelica Rylin: Gracias a vosotros. ¡Metal Symphony mola!

M.S: Analicemos “Divanity” poco a poco.

M.S: Es posible que algunos de nuestros lectores no haya oído hablar de The Murder of My Sweet.

Piensa en películas como: Sin City, The Spirit, 3000, Watchmen, Sky captain and the World of tomorrow y mi favorita, Sweeney Todd.

¿Querríais decir algo a vuestros fans españoles?

Si!

Daniel Flores and Angelica Rylin – The Murder of my sweet –

Hi, First of all, I would like to thank you for your time with Metal Symphony’s readers.

Daniel Flores and Angelica Rylin: Thank you for taking time. Metal Symphony rocks!

And, secondly, my sincere congratulations on this great piece of work, published recently with the title “Divanity”, How did the name of the cd come out? What would you like to express with it?

DF: Well, it’s the identification for the whole album, a sort of “theme” title so to speak but without being a concept of the whole album. Divanity is a hybrid word of “Diva”, “Vanity” and “Divine”. Which in terms means that that all these words combined are in the lyrical concept of the album, again without it all being a concept album. We thought this was the best way to go when describing the whole album and if you look at the cover you’ll see our lead singer taking that hybrid-word to reality, it’s a sort of a cinematic way of going much different from all the concept album that many have already heard.

Let´s analyze Divanity little by little. In general terms, the production is superb. Daniel Flores has done a really great job. Are you happy with the cd’s final outcome? How long did the mixing and recording of the tracks take you?

AR: I am so happy about the final out come. Daniel has done a tremendous job recording and mixing everything. We had the opportunity to use Daniel’s own studio Sound vs. Science and in that way we were able to go down and work when ever we felt like it instead of saving our ideas until we had booked a studio. As an artist it’s really important to go with that first feeling and if you have to hold on it than it might get lost. The songwriting and recordings started in late 2007 and was completed in early 2009. Then we had to wait for the release for almost a year for different reasons.

It’s possible  some of our readers  may not have  heard of The MURDER OF MY  SWEET, Could you explain in general terms how the band was formed and its beginnings? And the meaning of your name, it’s curious hehe…

DF: That the cool thing about starting something new and exiting, we get to speak about these things that we love. The name of our band is also a sort of a play with words, it’s mainly been taken from the 1944 Film noire movie “Murder, my sweet” which is a classic in the genre.  We wanted a name that said Film noire and at the same time could be the name of a heavy metal band, a pretty impossible task if you ask me but after long and hard thinking we came out with this thing just by adding the words “The” and “of” in there which makes us sound like a statement,  fact.
The word  “Sweet” points to our softer side which is what Angelica brings to the table and the word “murder” appeals to the heavier side of us, mainly the guitar player and bass player who listen to some death metal stuff. I sort of bring the things in the middle and sort of keep all these monsters together.
Mine and Angelicas obsession for the new era of film noire made this whole band what it is, check out films like: Sin city, The spirit, 3000, Watchmen, Sky captain and the world of tomorrow and my favorite Sweeney Todd. If you look at these films you’ll see where we come from.

Moving on to Divanity, just at the beginning of the cd we realize that the melody is present throughout the whole piece, especially in songs like “No Evil”, a hook track, which is the first track in the cd . How did this song come up? What do you want to represent in its lyrics?

AR: No evil is supposed to be a wake up call. Embrace your fears and go out and do something with your life. Only you can make the changes you need, this is our shout out. As Daniel talked about earlier we are both into movies and score music and we wanted to make sort of a horror movie experience on No evil. But a non scary horror movie, you decide how it ends.

One of the main characteristics of Divanity is its wide musical range. We find not only classic melodic rhythms but also more orchestral tracks and Arabic influences in tracks like “Chemical Attraction”, which possess a special magic. Was this musical diversity the goal in “Divanity”?

DF:  Yeah sure, again we think in a romantic and cinematic way when writing these songs. In my head the song chemical attraction is a bout a couple that are not to fall in love with each other and that makes me instantly think about “Arabian music” as I am south American I tend to go away from my own cultural thinking and I am much more intrigued by the hundreds of other amazing cultures out there.
The whole goal of this album is that it has to be a sort of “mind’s eye” journey, we provide you with the music but you, you come up with the visions and those are individual. For me it’s very important to trigger these kinds of feeling that you speak about for the listeners. That’s why the music has been taken to it’s limit when it comes to production and arrangements, you would really feel it when you listen to it.

There are many incentives by which this cd has an incredible integrity, one of them is Angelica Rylin’s voice. How did you find the perfect singer for your music?

DF: I never intended to find a female vocal singer, I just wanted a great vocalist no matter looks, origin or sex. The fact that she came and made a great session was just wonderful, I never expected it and neither did she.
I heard a rumor about her being a great vocalist and that she had nothing to do at the moment, this was in late summer 2007. I brought her down to my bat cave here in Stockholm (sound vs. Science studio) and she did an awesome audition for me. She sang: Kiss of death and she sang it perfectly from the beginning to the end, some of the takes in that session actually ended up in the disc and that fact gives the song another level of quality.
Good looking women are easy to find in Sweden, but good looking women with actual talent, is kind of impossible. I got lucky I guess.

I really believe Angelica has been one of the best new Swedish artists in 2010, in terms of Melodic Metal. From what I know, your Myspace was in the TOP 10 most visited Myspaces in Sweden, and you gained a great number of fans all around the world, What did you do to get that?

DF: It is fantastic, Angelica has that sweet innocent look and she has all the characteristics which you need to make it big.
Our myspace did gain attention when we released some demo songs back in 2008, the buzz as I guess started back then and it has blown up out of proportion IMO. I’m not saying it’s bad but I guess allot of hard work lays behind that success, work which I and Angelica has been a big part of.

The first track of Divanity introduced to the media was “Bleed Me Dry”, and it became “the single” on its own. What can you tell us about this song? What feeling would you like to express/transmit?

AR: The song is about judgmental thinking. The chorus explains that. Just because you are not like me doesn’t mean I’m better or worse, the song suggest we should instead celebrate the difference between one and other. My production for this song is very subtle and to the point, very little to hide here, it’s all in your face just like the songs suggests, DON’T HIDE BEHIND YOUR MASK. That’s the approach we took when making this song too.

In tracks like “One Bullet”, you give a lot of importance to choral arrangements, to the extent of being compared in that sense with some bands like Epica. What are the main differences between Epica and The Murder of My Sweet?  How would you define your sound?

DF: Well, as I’m not really familiar with what Epica does as a band, I’m sure our difference parts of in many different way. We come from a music oriented background, most of us are already names of their own, so we are not just a band, all our members have great skills and have proven that on countless of albums, that thing only makes us a unique band in the music business.
I’m not really sure what else to say before hearing what Epica does musically, but the little bit and things I already heard are great but in the direction of a metal “only” kind of style whilst our music appeals to ALL people who ever listened to radio or bought a record.
Also, our love for pop music is much more in your face in our bands than on most female fronted bands out there. Simply we have our own agenda and don’t care if we don’t blend in the female fronted singer category.

You are a band coming from Sweden, a country where the musical culture is almost a “must” and new bands like H.E.A.T, Free Spirit are coming up. Do you know them? Which new bands from Sweden do you think are at their height?

DF: Depends of what you mean, either you mean their popularity or musician ship? Well, The popularity is very hard to pin down as it’s all relative comparing to bands like Metallica or Aerosmith but in terms of musician ship HEAT is a great up coming band (the other I haven’t heard) which with HARD work could grow to be a really respected act here in Sweden and outside the world.

Bands I like from Sweden right now are Backyard babies and In flames but these both bands have much more of both these elements I just spoke about at least comparing them to HEAT.
I have spoken to the manager of HEAT at one point (I wanted the singer of HEAT to sing on a record I was producing) but as I’m older and already done with my Winger, RATT (obsessive listening) time I think we would have much to say to each other…

I noticed that in the some moments throughout the cd you want to give songs a touch of classical music, for example, in tracks like “Revolution”. Are you influenced by the orchestral atmosphere? Which classic bands have you influenced most when creating this cd?

DF: Thank you, the style you can here on this song is more or less influenced by most of the cinematic music that LUC BESON has in his films (Nikita, Fifth element), I am in love with French classic music and that’s what you can hear in there. In that particular passage of “revolution” you will be able to hear Jean Michel Jarre, I have listened a great deal of E.L.O music during my teens, specially the albums “ A new world record” and “Time”.

The Murder of My Sweet presents a musical style that, I think, can fit really well in our country. Do you have any offer to play in Spain? Do you have plans of a tour in the coming months?

DF: We just signed a deal with booking agency ITM management (Lordi, Primal fear) and we are looking forward to tour most of Europe soon. Spain is a MUST for me as I have many friend and fans from your beautiful country.

After Divanity I guess you will continue with your legacy with another studio cd. Have you thought about the approach you will give to your next cd? Will you follow the same musical trend?

DF: We actually just been touching this topic. I guess we will have some of what you speak about but also add something new and fresh. We think we will be harder and softer on the next record just to iron out dull grey areas in our style.

Your cd has been out for quite a long time. How have the sales and the reviews gone? Which the main goal for a band like yours?

DF: Dude, the cd was released back in Jan 29th… There is going to be at least a half year before we will know anything about the sales, It’s impossible to predict a number at this point or at least one month after the release.

The reviews have been nothing but AWESOME and of course we have some really bad ones too but they never say we have a bad production, nor bad songs or bad band, they just say, they don’t like our pictures and how we look…… hahahahahaha

Well, guys, on behalf of Metal Symphony we wish you good luck with this cd and next ones! Thanks for you time with us. Would you like to say something to your Spanish fans?

Yes! Please buy the record if you like. Don’t download it, because if you do, it’s going to be impossible to tour in your country, believe me if you heard our music you really would want to see us live too but if you download it there is no official track of where we should go and tour.
So, buy and support artists out there and we will see you on tour soon!

Please visit: www.myspace.com/themurderofmysweet or www.themurderofmysweet.com for more info and new unreleased tracks.

Thanks Metal symphony, you rock!
