Cantante femenina: Myrthe van Beest (Magion) / Floor Jansen (ReVamp)

Cantante masculino: Georg Neuhauser (Serenity)

Guitarras: Chris Vrij, Arjen van der Toom (Magion)

Bajos: Menno Bruggeling (Magion) / Fabio D’Amore (Serenity)

ENGLISH VERSION

M.S: Hi, thanks a lot for taking a few minutes to answer to our questions. First of all, how are you?

[Joop:] We are enjoying the summer, busy with our allday normal lives and of course working towards our MFVF gig ! Myrthe is having her first baby soon and our drummer David has just become a father for the first time. Our new album is soon to be released, so it is very exciting year so far for all of us!

M.S: As it is the first time we get to have an interview with you here at Metal Symphony,we’d like you to introduce yourselves to our readers talking a bit about where are you coming from, how was your band formed, what are your influences…

[Myrthe:] Magion was formed in 2005 by guitarist Chris Vrij and drummer David de Waal. A few months after they started writing songs together I joined the band on vocals. It was initially David’s idea to form a band similar to Nightwish and After Forever. Very soon we started recording songs and things clicked very well. Later on Arjen van der Toorn and Menno Bruggeling joined the band aswell. Our latest addition is Joop de Rooij on synths in 2011.

M.S: For those who haven’t listened to your music yet, which songs would you strongly recommend for them to have an idea of your sound?

[Myrthe:] One of our old timers is called "Greed" this is one of the first songs we’ve written and we play it on every gig. To us this one is a classic and it reflects our style very well. On the second album our sound has changed alot. The songs are much darker and more melancholic. It’s hard to pick just one, but I’d say that our new song ‘Body’s Betrayal’ has it all. It has very dark passages, a catchy chorus and even some death metal parts. It’s going to be a killer live!

[Joop:] For me, Greed, Neverending Winter and Shallow Grounds are real crowdpleasers. I love to see the audience go interactive and nuts on our sound !

M.S: Do you have any material available to purchase or download? If so, where can people go to get it or listen to it?

[Joop:] You can purchase our current album through bandcamp (music.magionband.com) and the site of Sonic Cathedral (www.soniccathedral.com)

M.S: After 11 years, what do you think the MFVF still has to offer to the audience?

[Joop:] MFVF in my opinion is one of the most acclaimed festivals when it comes to Femal Fronted Metal. Aside from the biggest names performing on regular basis, the festival also introduces new talent to the audience. The new and talented bands are offered an opportunity to perform in a very professional setting in front of a large crowd, boosting their name in the scene.

M.S: And on your side, what will you offer to the people that will go there and see your performance?

[Joop:] Knowing that Magion will perform as the first band on Saturday on 10:30, I promote our upcoming performance at MFVF as “the best wake-up call you will ever get”..and thats what it is! We promise you mindblowing music, symphonic orchestral waves of energy coming to you and WE WILL put a smile on your face for the rest of the weekend. We cannot reveal all, but our set will consist out of some classic songs and songs of our new album.

M.S: Any favourites you intend to see on the fest when they are on stage?

[Joop:] I like to see the girls from Eve’s Apple and I am very happy to see Floor Jansen on stage again with the new ReVamp. Also, Anneke van Gierbergen sounds very promising and most of all… Tarja !

M.S: If a jam session could happen with any members of those participating in this MFVF’s edition’s line-up, who would be your chosen ones for? More than one name is possible.

[Joop:] I am very happy with the bandmembers of Magion, so I would choose them above all other musicians. But if I have to choose…

Female singer:Myrthe van Beest (Magion) / Floor Jansen (Revamp)
Male singer:Georg Neuhauser (Serenity)
Guitars: Chris Vrij, Arjen v/d Toorn (Magion)
Bass:Menno Bruggeling (Magion) / Fabio D’Amore (Serenity)
Keys:Joop de Rooij (Magion) / Ruben Wijga (Revamp)
Drums:David de Waal (Magion) / Sander Zoer (Delain)

M.S: Talking about other fests, you usually don’t get more than a couple of bands off the femme-metal genre, and normally, the chosen ones tend to be picked up from those who have been active for more than 10 years or so, bands like Epica, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil… What’s your opinion on this issue?

[Joop:] Well, you have to be aware of the fact that all bands start out as a new band on whatever festival..also these bands. This goes for all genres in my opinion; if you work hard and get recognized (and a little luck at the side ) and attract a lot of of people to the festival, you will eventually being invited again. That being said, a festival wants to offer a good mixture of acclaimed acts and new talent, so it only makes sense that the big names are returning every two years or so. People are travelling from all over the world to visit a festival and there has to be some money made..things are not for free, so as a festival, you have to make sure to have a line-up which attracts people who are willing to pay and travel to be able to also cover expenses.

MS: And going deeper into this topic, do you consider there’s still life for the genre? Is there more to explore beyond the "so well-know lyrical voices with metal music"? We know there are bands with gutural voices (even female ones), and others are trying mixing this music with other types like electronic and some others, but there’s still people who won’t look further from that first notion…

[Joop:] Music is not “new” you know? Notes, chords, riffs, rhytm patterns..all are played somehow in history in whatever form in every order possible on whatever instrument. The only thing that makes a difference is how your bring your music and performance as a band. That plus you have to be at the right time at the right place with the right people around you. Of course new technology has a role in it, but in the end, it is still the musician/band who is at the base of the composition.

M.S: Changing topics, what are you up to these days? Any concert or recording apart from the fest?

[Joop:] Right now we are in the process of releasing our new album “A Different Shade Of Darkness”. Processing artwork, cd-press, merchandise, promotional activities etc, etc. But, to reveal something nice for all your readers; at Metal Female Voices Fest, you will be able to buy this wonderful new album, amongst other great stuff !

M.S: The MFVF gathers bands from very different countries together, which ones would you recommend from your own country?

[Joop:] Thats hard hahaha. The Netherlands are known by many as being the birthplace and standard of Female Fronted Metal (On which I always reply with. “Nightwish, Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil” *grin* ). But seriously, for me, Revamp, Epica and Delain are very good representatives of the nowaday Dutch Female fronted Metal.

M.S: We got to the end of it. That’s all on our side, so if you’d like to add anything else, you can do it now. Thanks a lot for your time and we wish you all the best for your future and for the fest.

[Joop:] Thank you so much for the interview, follow us on facebook.com/magionband and stay Magionated ! A personal message to all you Female Fronted Metal lovers out there: If you are on Metal Female Voices Fest..BE THERE on the 19th at 10:15 !!!
