Contactamos con uno de los baterías más destacados y activos de los últimos tiempos, el alemán Marco Minnemann, quien no para de hacer colaboraciones, clinics de batería, participar en varias bandas y colaboraciones. Marco nos visitará próximamente con una de sus bandas “The Aristocrats”, por lo que es buen momento para que nos cuente sobre sus proyectos.

MS.:Hola Marco , muchas gracias por atendernos, ¿Qué tal estás?
– Muy bien, y un gran saludo!
M.S.: Acaba de salir al mercado el debut del supergrupo progresivo más relevante de este año en el que te haces cargo de la batería, “The Sea Within”. ¿Cómo ha sido la experiencia?
– Fue muy original. Todos escribimos canciones, nos reunimos en un estudio en Londres, grabamos, luego añadimos sonidos en nuestras casas y luego vino la carretera. Salió bastante bien, creo.
M.S.:Con tantos grandes músicos, ¿ cómo se ha desarrollado el trabajo compositivo?
– Bueno, es una gran banda con muchos músicos y voces en ella. Así que puedes escribir libremente y desarrollar al máximo tu imaginación. Prácticamente no hay limitaciones, ya que puedes escribir rock o música orquestal … o incluso partes de jazz con una banda así.
M.S.: Se ha anunciado la participación de The Sea Within en el Night of theProg en Lorely el próximo 14 de julio, un concierto que seguro es muy especial para ti, pues será en tu país. ¿Hay programada alguna actuación más de la banda? ¿Es posible una gira más adelante?
– La respuesta es SÍ. Tenemos otro show en Yes ‘Cruise To The Edge confirmado y luego también estamos pensando en una gira en marzo / abril de 2019.
M.S.: Tras tu doble álbum editado el año pasado “Borrego”, estás elaborando tu próximo álbum, ¿nos puedes adelantar algo sobre él? ¿Nos podrías decir cuándo saldrá al mercado?
– Sí, de hecho estoy trabajando en mi próximo álbum. Va a ser versátil y muy bien pensado. Me tomo mi tiempo con esto y el lema aquí es calidad por encima de cantidad. En Borrego, que todavía es un buen álbum, creo, trabajé bajo condiciones y en tiempos bastante cuestionables marcados por el sello que lo lanzó, sin apenas ningún apoyo económico para mí y los invitados. Con mucho gusto estoy lanzando este nuevo álbum de nuevo yo mismo, como realmente lo hice con la mayoría de mis álbumes. Este álbum es un proceso tan alegre y contiene canciones muy cuidadosamente elegidas. Esperaré a 2019 para lanzarlo, ya que The Sea Within acaba de salir y no quiero interferir con lanzamientos que se "superponen".
M.S.: Para tu último álbum cuentas con importantes colaboraciones como Alex Lifeson (Rush), David Kollar, Mohini Dey, AdiArgelazi, MaiahWynne. ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre sus aportaciones?¿Te has ocupado tú de todos los instrumentos y la mezcla?
– Como en mis otros álbumes, suelo tocar y cantar. Pero a veces hay puntos donde escucho un cierto toque que podría visualizar por algunos de los músicos / cantantes que conozco, y entonces me pongo en contacto con ellos. O en algunos casos, fue incluso al contrario, donde algunos de estos grandes músicos se pusieron en contacto conmigo y me preguntaron si podían contribuir. Algunas, o de hecho todas las contribuciones, son realmente maravillosas y estoy súper feliz y agradecido de que quieran trabajar conmigo.
M.S.: También querría preguntarte por tus colaboraciones en el disco de Alberto Rigoni, el próximo álbum de The Mute Gods, o tu participación en el último disco de Jordan Rudess. ¿Tienes alguna próxima colaboración prevista?
– Sí, lo sé, jajaja. Hay tantas cosas que están por venir, ¿verdad? Pero oye, eso es lo que hago y me encanta tocar música. Es mi vocación. El nuevo de The Mute Gods va a ser grandioso. Toqué la batería, algunas guitarras y otra instrumentación en ese. Me encanta trabajar con Nick Beggs, viejo y querido amigo mío. ¿Más planes de colaboración? Bueno, en este momento me gustaría centrarme en mi nuevo lanzamiento, pero siempre estoy abierto y saco tiempo si surge algo grandioso.
M.S.: Además de tu álbum, los proyectos con tus bandas, las colaboraciones también sueles girar con otros músicos, JoeSatriani por ejemplo. ¿Hay algún plan de gira para apoyar a algún artista o banda?
– Hmmm, bueno, se acerca nuestra gira con The Aristocrats, luego algunos shows con In Continuum, y luego The Sea Within. Eso deja el calendario muy bien relleno en este momento. 🙂
M.S.: El próximo mes de septiembre tienes programada una gira europea con tus amigos Guthrie Govan y Bryan Belleren vuestro proyecto The Aristocrats que pasará por España y que muchos de nosotros no nos la vamos a perder. ¿Qué tenéis pensado ofrecernos en esta gira?
– ¡Esta va a ser una gira tan divertida! Porque nos hemos tomado un largo descanso de un año, y ahora regresar descansados a nuestro amado trío será una experiencia alegre. Estamos tocando todas las de los fans y nuestras favoritas, y qué puedo decir, vamos a pasar un buen rato juntos.
M.S.:La verdad es que los conciertos de TheAristocrats son tremendamente divertidos, además de una exhibición musical. Recuerdo en vuestra última visita a España la comunión con tus compañeros en el escenario, recuerdo cómo nos contabais antes de empezar cada tema la historia de cada uno de ellos, al final creabais la sensación en la sala de una gran reunión de amigos. TheAristocrats es fundamentalmente un grupo de amigos ¿Para cuándo un nuevo álbum?
– Muchas gracias, así es exactamente como lo vemos nosotros mismos. Nunca nos tomamos demasiado en serio sobre el escenario y siempre nos gusta compartir nuestras historias de una manera musical y verbal en el escenario. Nuevo álbum … bueno, creo que 2019 será el año realista para algo nuevo nuestro.
M.S.:Una cosa que siempre me ha sorprendido de ti, aparte de ser un multi instrumentista, es tu capacidad en la batería para abordar cualquier tipo de música. Desde tu paso por el death metal de Necrophagist, al jazz, al rock progresivo, la electrónica, etc… Eso demuestra tu gran profesionalidad y dominio del instrumento. Pero nos gustaría saber a cerca de tus gustos musicales. ¿Qué tipo de música te gusta escuchar?
– Muchas gracias. Creo que si te gustan ciertos estilos de música, aprendes a comprenderla y, por lo tanto, puedes traducirla, sentirla y tocarla. Mis bandas favoritas con las que crecí son Queen, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Kraftwerk, Miles Davis, Prince, Kate Bush … Por nombrar solo algunas.

MS.: Hello Marco, thank you very much for answering our questions. How are you?
— Very well, and a big hello!
M.S .: The debut of the most important progressive group this year, in which you take charge of the battery, "The Sea Within", has just released. How was the experience?
— It was very refreshing. We all wrote songs, gathered in a studio in London, recorded, then did overdubs in our homes and then the road came out. It it came out quite good I think.
M.S.: With so many great musicians, how did you work to compose the music?
— Well, it’s a big band with many players and vocals in it. So you can write freely and realize a lot of your imagination. There’s virtuality no limitation as you can write rock or orchestral … or even jazzy parts with a band like that.
M.S .: It has been announced the participation of The Sea Within in the Night of theProg in Lorely on July 14, a concert that is very special for you as it will take place in your country. Is there any other show scheduled for the band? Are you planning to tour later?
— The answer is YES. We have another show on Yes’ Cruise To The Edge confirmed and then also are planning a tour in March/April 2019.
M.S .: After your double album released last year, "Borrego", you are working on your next álbum. Can you tell us something about it in advance? Can you tell us when it will be released?
— Yes indeed, I’m working on my next album. It’s going to be versatile and very thought out. I’m taking my time with it and the motto here is quality winning over quantity. On Borrego, which still is a good album I think, I worked under quite questionable conditions and time lines, set by the label who put out that release, with hardly any monetary support for myself and the guests. Gladly I’m releasing this new album myself again, as I did with actually most of my albums. This album is such a joyful process and contains very carefully put together songs. I’ll wait for a release in 2019, since The Sea Within just came out and I don’t want to interfere with the releases getting ‘overlapped’.
M.S .: You are having important collaborations in this album, like Alex Lifeson (Rush), David Kollar, Mohini Dey, AdiArgelazi, MaiahWynne. What can you tell us about their contributions? Are you taking care of all the instruments and the mix?
— As on my other albums, I usually play and sing the instruments. But sometimes there are spots where I hear a certain touch I could envision by some of the players/singers I know, and then I contact them. Or in some cases, it was even the other way around, where some of these great musicians contacted me and asked if they could contribute. Some, or actually all contributions are really wonderful and I’m super happy and grateful that they want work with me.
M.S .: I would also like to ask you about your contributions to Alberto Rigoni’s album, the upcoming album of The Mute Gods, or your participation in the last album by Jordan Rudess. Do you have any upcoming collaboration planned?
— Yes I know, hahaha. So many things coming up, right? But hey, that’s what I do and I love playing music. It’s my calling. The new Mute Gods is going to be great. I played Drums, some Guitars and other instrumentation on that one. I love working with Nick Beggs, old and dear friend of mine. More collaboration plans? Well, right now I’d like to focus on my new release, but I’m always open and make time if something great comes along.
M.S .: In addition to your album, the projects with your bands and the collaborations, you usually go on tour with other musicians, JoeSatriani for example. Is there any plan to support any artist or band?
— Hmmm, well, our Aristocrats tour is coming up, then a few shows with In Continuum, and then The Sea Within. That pretty much fills the schedule nicely at the moment. 🙂
M.S .: Next September you will have an European tour with your friends Guthrie Govan and Bryan Beller, your project The Aristocrats, that will come to Spain and that many of us are not going to miss. What do you have in mind to offer us on this tour?
— This is going to be such a fun tour! Because we have taken a year long break, and now coming back fresh to our beloved trio will be a joyful experience. We’re playing all of the fan and our favorites and what can I say, let’s have a great time all together.
M.S.: The truth is that the concerts of The Aristocrats are lot of fun, as well as a musical exhibition. I remember the understanding with your collegues on stage in your last visit to Spain. I remember how you told us about the story of each song before starting to play it. In the end we got the impression that there were a gathering of friends. The Aristocrats are basically a group of friends. When are you going to launch a new album?
— Thanks so much, that’s exactly how we see this ourselves. We never take ourselves too serious on stage and we always like share our stories in a musical and verbal way on stage. New album… well, I think 2019 will be realistic year for something new from us.
M.S.: One thing that has always surprised me about you, apart from being a multi-instrumentalist, is your ability on the drums to tackle any type of music. From the death metal of Necrophagist, to jazz, progressive rock, electronics, etc … That shows your great professionalism and mastery of the instrument. But we would like to know about your musical tastes. What kind of music do you like to listen to?
— Thanks so much. I believe that if you like certain styles of music, you learn to understand it and therefore are able to translate it, feel it and play it. My favorite bands I grew up with are Queen, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Kraftwerk, Miles Davis, Prince, Kate Bush…. To name only a few.
