MS: Hola Sarah, gracias por concedernos tu tiempo para esta entrevista. ¿Cómo estás?
Sarah: Hola! ¡Estoy genial! Acabo de llegar a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania con el grupo para tocar en un festival. Estamos pasando el rato antes de la prueba de sonido, mientras montan nuestro equipo.
MS: Lo primero que quiero preguntaros, y supongo que lo habéis contestado unas cuantas veces… ¿Por qué escogísteis la banda Led Zeppelin para homenajearla, y no otra como Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Metallica…
Steph Paynes(fundadora de la banda): Para mi, y creo que todo el mundo coincide, la música de Led Zeppelin es el rock más brillante, poderoso y dinámico que se haya creado jamás. Así que, la escogí como músico y como fan, y me parece que no hay nada más divertido, retador y satisfactorio musicalmente que tocar la música de Led Zeppelin. Los grupos que mencionas tienen mucho mérito, pero nunca me atraparon como lo hicieron los Zeppelin.
MS: Todos los miembros de Lez Zeppelin son mujeres; ¿Fue fácil encontrar las personas idóneas para la banda? ¿Como te pusiste en contacto con los otros miembros del grupo?
Steph: No fue fácil, al principio parecía una tarea imposible encontrar 4 músicos (¡hombres o mujeres!) que pudieran tocar esta música tanto técnicamente, como con la madurez musical, la sensibilidad, y el dinamismo requerido.
Una vez que empecé a buscar por los otros 3 miembros, tuve la suerte de poder encontrarlas mediante el boca a boca. Pareció haber algo mágico en ello.
M.S: El nombre del grupo es casi igual al de la banda que homenajeáis. ¿Encontraste algún problema en eso? ¿Teníais un nombre alternativo?
Steph: No ha habido problemas hasta el momento, ha habido mucha intriga, curiosidad, y anécdotas. La gente se ríe cuando le decimos el nombre de nuestro grupo. Y no, no hubo ninguna duda ni ningún otro nombre una vez que surgió la idea de Lez Zeppelin.
M.S: ¿Hay o habrá algún tema original de Lez Zeppelin?
Steph: Hay 2 temas instrumentales originales en nuestro disco de debut, y han recibido una buena acogida. ¿Habrá más? Quizás, si ocurre de forma natural y está bien. Pero hay mucho por explorar aún en los Zeppelin y estamos muy felices y satisfechas con lo que hacemos.
MS: No sabemos cuan populares sois en USA, ¿puedes contarnos algo acerca de vuestro público?
Sarah: Nuestro público es muy ecléctico en USA. A veces en un espectáculo para todas las edades, tenemos chicas y chicos de 10 años en primera fila. Los padres llevan a sus hijos a nuestros conciertos, son fans originales de Led Zep, de los setenta. Hemos empezado a tener muchas más mujeres en los conciertos, lo que es paravilloso. Prueba que es una música que le encanta a mucha gente y sigue siendo importante 40 años después.
MS. ¿Saben los Zeppelin originales que existís? Si lo saben, ¿qué opinan? Y si no, ¿os gustaría que lo supieran?
Sarah: Los miembros de Led saben que existimos y hasta donde sabemos saben todo lo que hacemos. Para nosotras, el concepto de la banda gira en torno a conservar la intregridad de la música que crearon. Es amada por millones de personas en todo el mundo, y es sagrada. Tenemos una enorme responsabilidad cuando tocamos, para traer de nuevo a la vida en un directo el espíritu en el que se creó esa música. Pienso que a todas nos encantaría conocer a los miembros que quedan. Surgiría una conversación muy interesante, seguro.
MS. En tu myspace podemos escuchar temas muy diferentes al estilo de Led Zeppelin, como "Lost", "Over you"… ¿Es fácil para vosotras combinar temas con estilos tan dispares?
Sarah: Bueno, los últimos 3 años, desde que entré en Lez Zeppelin, me he concentrado principalmente en el grupo y en la música de Led Zeppelin. Los temas que tengo en mi myspace son demos de antes de entrar en el grupo. En ese momento (2005) trabajaba con un para de productores en New York, escribiendo juntos y grabando temas de pop/rock para un album. En el momento en el que terminé de grabar, tuve la oportunidad de entrar en Lez Zeppelin y el material quedó atrás. Me encanta y prefiero cantar temas de Zeppelin, pero estoy interesada en volver a escribir nuevos temas de nuevo.
MS: En la sección de fotos de tu myspace se puede ver que has hecho trabajos como modelo, ¿cómo lo combinas con la música? ¿O solo te dedicas a la música? ¿Tienes algún trabajo además de esto?
Sarah: He sido realmente afortunada por trabajar en distintas áreas de la industria del ocio. Soy una bailarina muy bien entrenada y he actuado en el musical "42nd Street" en Broadway y en "We will rock you" en Las Vegas. También trabajé de modelo. Probablemente mi mejor trabajo fue una campaña para Levi’s, que salió en Tokyo y fue fotografiada por Simon Harsent.
MS. Tenéis un disco a la venta, ¿dónde podemos combrarlo? ¿Cómo escogéis los temas de entre la discografía de Led Zeppelin?
Sarah: Nuestro álbum de debut homónimo se grabó el pasado verano y lo produjo Eddie Kramer, quien es conocido por su increíble trabajo como ingeniero en al menos 5 discos de Led Zeppelin, además de grabar a Hendrix, Peter Frampton, Kiss y muchos más.
Hablamos de lo importante que era para nosotras mostrar un amplio rango del material de Led Zeppelin en el disco, así que solo versionamos un tema de cada uno de los 6 primeros discos, y luego añadimos dos temas instrumentales propios. No queríamos que los originales fueran el foco de atención pero las añadimos para que se vea lo que podemos hacer.

M.S: En vuestros shows a parte de los temas del disco soléis poner alguna otra versión?
Sarah: Led Zeppelin siempre gustaron de improvisar en directo y nosotras hacemos lo mismo, así que a veces mezclamos trozos de otros temas que nos gusta, de grupos como Cream, Muddy Waters… Cada noche el directo es distinto, lo que hace que siga vivo y sea exictante. Creo que eso hace que la audiencia nos aprecie. No tratamos de imitar y tocar los temas de Zeppelin nota por nota. Tomamos lo que hacían en directo y en el estudio, y le damos nueva vida. Creo que es parte del éxito que tenemos.
M.S: A finales de octubre y durante el mes de Noviembre estaréis por Londres y Alemania, hay alguna posibilidad de la gira se amplíe a más ciudades europeas y paséis por España por ejemplo?
Sarah: ¡Nos encantaría venir a España! no creo que sea posible ahora por las circunstancias, pero podría serlo en el futuro.
M.S: Que podemos encontrar en un concierto de Lez Zeppelin?
Sarah: Creo que puedes encontrar intensidad, pasión, y una forma de usar la música para alcanzar esta meta, que es lo creemos que habrías experimentado si hubieras sido tan afortunado de haber visto un concierto de Led Zeppelin. Es poderoso, dinámico, y es excitante para nosotros, y también para el público.
Nosotros tocamos todas las favoritas del público, como "Rock and roll", "Black dog", pero también versiones épicas como "Dazed and confused", "in my time of dying" y "no quarter". Queremos dare al público una total experiencia de concierto.
M.S: Tenéis confirmadas multitud de fechas, nos puedes decir de que concierto guardas un mejor recuerdo?
Steph: Fui la única del grupo que vio la reunión de los Led en el O2 de Londres el pasado diciembre. Puedo decir que fue una experiencia inolvidable y alucinante. Nunca había visto un directo de Zeppelin, y ver a Jimmy tocando actualmente fue tan surrealista y maravilloso, y por supuesto tan humilde… Estuvieron increíbles. Ellos prepararon un gran show y creo que todos los del público estábamos en un estado de semi-shock. Además, conocí a John Paul Jones después del concierto, en una de las fiestas VIP. Él me saludó muy amablemente y conocía todo sobre Lez Zeppelin. Lo primero que me preguntó fue "¿cuál de ellas eres?" Increíble…
M.S: Que planes de futuro tiene el grupo?
Sarah: Estamos tocando en directos y festivales por toda USA y Europa. Iremos a Japón en septiembre y a Australia al comienzos del próximo año. Nos sentimos excitadas por tocar esta increíble música para fans de todo el mundo y esperamos poder continuar. También estamos trabajando en nuestro próximo disco.

MS: Hi Sarah, thanks for taking your time answering this interview, how are you?
Sarah: Hi! I am great! I just arrived in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with the band to play a festival. We are all hanging out before soundcheck, while the crew loads our equipment.
MS: First question is a must ask, and I guess you’ve answered it quite a few times…. Why did you choose the band Led Zeppelin to cover it, and why not another like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Metallica…
(Steph Paynes here; Sarah passed this question to me since I started the band about four years ago). To me, and I think all would agree, the music of Led Zeppelin is far and away some of the most brilliant, powerful and dynamic rock music ever created. So, I was taken by it fully, as both fan and musician and it seemed to me that there would be nothing more enjoyable, challenging and satisfying musically than to play Led Zeppelin. The other music you mention certainly has its merits, but it never captured me in the same way as does Zeppelin.
MS: Lez Zeppelín’s member are all women, was it easy to find the perfect ones to make the band? How did you get in contact with all of them?
(Steph) No, it was nearly an impossible task to find four musicians – men or women! – who were up to playing this music both technically and with the kind of musical maturity, sensibility and dynamism that is required. However, once I started looking around for the other three, it happened somehow that I was able to find them through word of mouth. There had to be some kind of magic involved – it was an idea whose time had come!
MS: Your name’s very similar to the one of the original band you cover, did you find any troubles with it? Was there any other alternative name?
(Steph) Ha, no troubles with it yet, but a lot of intrigue, curiosity and entertainment. People smile every time we tell people the name of our band. And no, there was never any question of any other name once the idea for LEZ ZEPPELIN arrived.
MS: Silly question, but are there or will there be any original songs by Lez Zeppelin?
(Steph) There are two original instrumental tracks on our debut album, and they have been very positively received. Will there be more? Perhaps so, if it happens organically and it feels right. But, there is still so much of Zeppelin to explore and we’re all very happy and quite satisfied doing that.
MS: Why don’t know much about how popular you’re in the USA, so what can you tell us about your audience?
Sarah: Our audiences are pretty eclectic in the states. Sometimes at an all ages show, we will have boys and girls as young as 10 right up in the front row. You have parents bringing sons and daughters to our shows, as well as original Led Zep fans from the 70’s. We have started seeing a lot more women at the shows, too, which is awesome. It really proves that this music is loved by a lot of people and that it is still so relevant 40 years later.
MS: Does the original band know of your existence? If so, what’s their opinion? If no, would you like to know it?
Sarah: The members of Led are definitely aware of us and as far as we know are all for what we are doing. For us, the whole concept of the band is about keeping the integrity of the music they created. It is loved by millions of people around the world and is sacred. We have a huge responsibility when we play to bring it back to life in a live setting in the spirit in which it was intended. I think we would all love to meet the remaining members. It would make for some very interesting conversations I’m sure!
MS: As we can see in your MySpace, you also go for very different songs from Led Zeppelin’s, like “Lost” or “Over you”… is it easy for you the combination of songs with such different style?
Sarah: Well for the last three years, since I joined Lez Zeppelin I have been concentrating primarily on the band and the music of Led Zeppelin. The songs I have on my Myspace are demos from before I started with the band. At the time (early 2005 ) I was working with a couple of producers in New York on co-writing and recording some pop/rock songs for a demo album. By the time I had finished recording, I got the opportunity to join Lez Zeppelin and so the original stuff was left behind. I much prefer singing the Zeppelin material but I am interested in getting back into writing songs again at some point.
MS: In the pics section of your MySpace we can see that you’ve done some work as a model, how do you combine this with music? Or music’s your only dedication? Maybe you have another work apart from these?
Sarah: I have been really lucky to work in many different areas of the entertainment business. I am a fully trained dancer and have performed in the musical "42nd Street" on Broadway and in "We Will Rock You" in Las Vegas. I have also done some work as a model. Probably my most major work modeling was a campaign for Levi’s, which ran in Tokyo and was photographed by Simon Harsent.
MS: You have one album released, where can we buy it? How did you choose the tracks among all Led Zeppelin’s discography?
Sarah: Our debut self-titled album was released last summer and was produced by Eddie Kramer, who is famous for the incredible work he did as an engineer on at least five of Led Zeppelin’s records, as well as on recordings by Jimi Hendrix, Peter Frampton, KISS and many more.
We all talked about how important it was for us to showcase a wide range of Zeppelin material on the album, so we covered one song from each of the first six albums and then added two instrumental original songs. We didn’t want the originals to become the focus but we added them sort of as a taste of what we could do.

MS: In your shows, apart from the album’s songs, do you have any other cover?
Sarah: Led Zeppelin always liked to improvise during their live performances and we like to do the same, so yes, sometimes we throw in bits other songs that we enjoy such as a number by Cream or Muddy Waters, etc. Every night the show is a little different, which to us keeps it alive and exciting. I think that’s what makes us appealing to an audience. We aren’t just out there trying to mimic and play Zeppelin note for note from the record. We take what they did in both a studio and a live setting and we breathe new life into it. I think that is a large part of the success of what we’re doing in the band.
MS: At the end of October, and during November you’ll be on tour through London and Germany, is there any possibility that the tour grows and you go to other european cities? Maybe you could come to Spain?
Sarah: We would love to come to Spain! I don’t think its possible this time due to scheduling but let’s make it happen for the future!
MS: What can we find in a Lez Zeppelin’s show?
Sarah: I think you will find intensity, passion and a focus on using musicianship to these ends, which is what we believe you would have experienced if you were lucky enough to have attended a Led Zeppelin show. Its powerful, it’s dynamic and it’s exciting for us, and as such, for the crowd, too.
We play everything from the crowd favorites like ‘Rock and Roll’ and ‘Black Dog’ to epic versions of ‘ Dazed and Confused’, ‘In My Time Of Dying’ and ‘No Quarter’. We strive to give our audiences the full concert experience.
MS: Talking about concerts, can you tell us any special one that you remember specially?
(Steph) I was the one member of the band who went to see the Led reunion at the O2 in London last December. I can say that was an unforgettable and stunning experience. I had never seen Zeppelin live, and just to see Jimmy up there actually playing was so surreal and wonderful and of course, humbling… They were all incredible. They really showed up prepared and I think all of us in the audience were in a state of semi-shock! Plus, I got to meet John Paul Jones afterwards at one of the VIP parties. He greeted me very warmly and knew all about Lez Zeppelin. His first question to me was, “so which one are you then?” Amazing.
MS: What are your plans for the future?
Sarah: We are playing shows and festivals all over the US and Europe. We’re heading to Japan in September and Australia early next year. We’re all excited to be playing this incredible music to fans all over the world and we hope we can continue to do that. We are also in the studio working on our next album.
