John Petrucci es uno de los mejores guitarristas de esta generación, con un estilo muy personal y peculiar, donde principalmente combina técnica, velocidad, pasión y grandes melodías; formando parte del elenco de grandes de la guitarra eléctrica de esta época. John Petrucci, guitarrista de la banda Dream Theater, nos presenta su segundo álbum en solitario, tras quince años de espera. Los trabajos con su banda, las giras y la participación en otros proyectos (giras con G3, clinics y demás) han estado alargando en el tiempo el momento para cristalizar lo que al final ha sido “Terminal Velocity”; un disco que, aún siendo instrumental, presenta innovaciones respecto de su primer “Suspended Animation”. Nos pusimos en contacto con él a través del teléfono días antes la salida de TV en formato digital para que nos contase sobre la situación actual, ese nuevo álbum, su reencuentro con Mike Portnoy después de tantos años sin trabajar juntos además de contarnos cosas sobre su banda Dream Theater y sus próximos lanzamientos.

M.S.: Hola John, ¿cómo estás? Es un placer hablar contigo … Esperamos que estés bien y a salvo …
Sí, gracias, estamos a salvo y bien. Hemos estado encerrados como todo el mundo, aquí en Nueva York. No ha sido fácil, pero afortunadamente todo el mundo está sano y salvo. Espero que estés bien y a salvo también.
MS: Sí, gracias… Podríamos empezar a hablar sobre este parón, quizás fue un momento para reflexionar y pensar que ya te acercas a más de 30 años de carrera musical como compositor, productor…. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo valoras tu carrera hasta la fecha?
Bueno, estoy muy agradecido por la experiencia … el tipo de música que toca Dream Theater no es música convencional, ya sabes, es metal progresivo y hemos podido tener una carrera increíble a nivel internacional y tantas cosas increíbles…. audiencias de todo el mundo. Entonces, ya sabes, cuando miro hacia atrás, estoy muy agradecido, muy agradecido por poder tener este regalo y poder hacer esto.
Como forma de vida, creo que es realmente especial y es algo que no doy por sentado que dure para siempre.
MS: Cuéntanos sobre tus guitarras, empezaste con tu Ibanez Picasso JPM100 P1, y ahora tienes tu propia Music Man «Signature», 6 y 7 cuerdas, pero ¿con qué modelo te sientes más cómodo? ¿Crees que tienes tu mejor guitarra?
Definitivamente creo que tengo mi mejor guitarra. Llevo trabajando con la gente de Music Man hace 20 años. Ha sido una relación increíble y hemos ido evolucionando. Creo que algunas de las guitarras más hermosas y mejores del mundo,ha sido la última, la Majesty, ha sido tan increíble y mucha gente la está disfrutando, para mí es la mejor guitarra del mundo. Son muchos años trabajando con mucha gente, ha sido muy fácil.
M.S: ¿Cuántas guitarras tienes?
Aproximadamente probablemente tengo alrededor de 300 o más guitarras.
M.S.: Este viernes estará disponible su segundo álbum en solitario «Terminal Velocity». Pero el cd y el vinilo salen en octubre, ¿por qué fechas de lanzamiento tan separadas entre dos formatos?
El proceso de testear y prensar el vinilo lleva mucho tiempo además de la distribución por todo el mundo, por lo que al lanzar ahora la versión digital puedes escucharla donde quieras, y si quieres tener el cd o el vinilo puedes comprarlos en el preorder.
M.S: ¿Qué puedes contarnos sobre este álbum? refleja tu estilo actual al tocar la guitarra?
Definitivamente… Hay mucha música en este disco que es completamente nueva … refleja mi estilo y técnica actual que recoge todo lo que practico. Luego parte de la música es un poco más antigua, ya sabes, algunas de las canciones que escribí hace varios años, la canción Gemini, la única canción que escribí hace mucho tiempo. Eso es de principios de los 90 y es algo que nunca grabé y siempre espero grabar, así que es un poco de todo.
M.S: ¿Crees que es un disco para todas las edades o solo para guitarristas?
Bueno, es música instrumental así que creo que atraerá principalmente a los guitarristas, pero espero que no solo a los guitarristas porque también pueden conocer o gustarle el instrumento. La música la puede disfrutar cualquiera y sabes que para mí trato de escribir música que sea interesante y que la gente pueda esperar escuchar… si van a dar una vuelta y quieren escuchar música o ir a correr, o al gimnasio… o lo que sea. Creo que es una música muy inspiradora y muy positiva. Así que espero que no sea solo para los guitarristas, aunque obviamente, habrá muchos músicos.
M.S.: Pudimos ver «Happy song» y «Glassy Eyed Zombies» en tu último G3, pero han pasado 15 años para lanzar este álbum, ¿cuándo has compuesto las otras canciones?
Tienes razón «Glassy Eyed Zombies» y «Happy song» fueron del G3. Así que las escribí hace varios años. También escribí «The Way Things Fall» en ese mismo período de tiempo y «Gemini» como mencioné, escribí esa canción hace mucho tiempo a principios de los 90, pero el resto de canciones – las otras cinco – las escribí en marzo … entre marzo y mayo. Así que «Snake in my boot», «Temple of Circadia», «Terminal Velocity», «The Oddfather» y «Out of the blue» son canciones nuevas, tardé 15 años, pero finalmente pude grabarlas. Estoy tan emocionado de que que salga tan pronto, en unos días solo.
M.S.: Para este álbum trabajaste con Dave LaRue en el bajo, alguien en quien confías desde tu primer álbum y G3, ¿cómo valoras su contribución al álbum?
Dave es maravilloso. Quiero decir, es uno de los mejores músicos que conozco y es un bajista increíble y, como dijiste, he estado tocando con él durante mucho tiempo. Tocó conmigo en la primera gira de g3 en 2001. Grabó en mi primer disco «Suspended animation», muchas giras del G3 y también ha hecho mis Guitar Universe Camp. Así que tengo mucha experiencia musical con Dave y le tengo mucho respeto como músico y creo que hizo un trabajo fenomenal en este álbum como siempre y no puedo esperar a que la gente escuche lo que hizo. Es simplemente increíble.
M.S.: Pero obviamente la noticia más mediática es haber trabajado con Mike Portnoy nuevamente. ¿Extrañaste trabajar juntos?
Obviamente han pasado más de 10 años, por lo que es realmente muy agradable trabajar con Mike de nuevo, muy, muy feliz de que haya aceptado hacer este disco. Primero yo había escrito toda la música y primero grabé todas las guitarras, así que no pudimos tocar juntos, pero él vino a mi estudio y grabó la batería, lo cual fue genial. Nos lo pasamos muy bien, ya sabes, fue muy tranquilo. Hizo un gran trabajo al pensar que la batería suena fenomenal en esto y estoy muy feliz de que pudiéramos hacer algo musicalmente de nuevo después de tanto tiempo. Realmente significa mucho para mí.
MS: Ahora que ya salió el segundo álbum, ¿es posible que la gente que no conoce «Suspended Animation» salga en CD o vinilo?
Bueno, de hecho la primera vez que «Suspended Animation» ha estado disponible ha sido hace unas semanas cuando lo lancé digitalmente y en streaming para que la gente pueda escucharlo así. Cuando lancé ese álbum por primera vez, lo hice en mi propio sello discográfico, «Sound My Music», al igual que «Terminal Velocity», pero me refiero al primer CD que lo vendíamos mi esposa y yo en nuestra casa, esa era la única forma en que la gente podía conseguirlo. Entonces una vez que se agotaron, no había más disponibles. Así que solo 15 años después lo lancé digitalmente y en streaming. Si hay una demanda de «Suspended Animation» en CD, estaría feliz de hacer eso. Realmente no es parte del plan en este momento, se puede escuchar en Apple music o Spotify o descargar en iTunes o Amazon music. Está ahí para que la gente lo pueda disfrutar
M.S.: Hablemos de Dream Theater, la pandemia mundial ha interrumpido su gira «Distant over time» y el vigésimo aniversario de «Scenes from a memory». Este bloqueo te ha dejado tiempo para avanzar en nuevas composiciones, ¿verdad?
Bueno, pudimos hacer muchas giras afortunadamente de «Distant over time» y «Scenes from a memory». Giramos por Europa dos veces y por Norteamérica dos veces. Desafortunadamente, no pudimos tocar en Asia ni Australia. Se suponía que íbamos a hacerlo en la primavera, pero debido a la pandemia no pudimos.
No estamos seguros de cuándo comenzará de nuevo la gira, puede ser dentro de un año, tal vez más o antes. Dependerá de si hay una vacuna, ya sabes…. es un momento muy incierto. Entonces, lo que vamos a hacer es volver al estudio en lugar de esperar. Regresaremos en aproximadamente un mes y comenzaremos a trabajar en un nuevo álbum y ese álbum saldrá en algún momento del próximo año, probablemente más adelante, pero tiene más sentido para nosotros hacer algo así. en lugar de esperar porque la pandemia ha impactado a todas las bandas del mundo, todos los músicos… Por eso es importante que nos mantengamos activos y que sigamos creativos.
M.S .: Tuvimos suerte y pudimos veros en España en enero de este año. ¿Qué conclusiones sacasteis de la gira?
Tío, nos divertimos mucho en la gira, ya sabes, en primer lugar, la reacción de la banda con «Distant over time» fue realmente increíble. Quiero decir que la gente en España realmente nos dio una gran respuesta al disco. Nos fue muy bien y nos hizo muy felices ver a tanta gente disfrutando, pero además de eso, como mencionaste, estábamos celebrando el 20 aniversario del lanzamiento de «Scenes from a memory». Y esos conciertos fueron realmente muy especiales no solo para nosotros sino para la gente de los shows, lo pasamos muy bien y como dije, afortunadamente pudimos venir en ese momento por Europa y tocar en España y otros países y en América del Norte y muy contento de haber tenido la oportunidad de hacerlo. El público español estuvo genial como siempre, fue fantástico y nos divertimos.
M.S .:¿Cuál es la canción más difícil de tocar de Scenes?
Probablemente «Beyond this life». Es una canción muy buena con muchos momentos difíciles, esa diría.
M.S.: Hablemos de nuevos lanzamientos, el nuevo álbum en vivo sobre esta gira llegará pronto, ¿podrías contarnos si hay fecha de lanzamiento y los formatos?
Todavía no tengo una fecha de lanzamiento, pero será este año.Entre Navidad y fin de año, estará en Blu-ray, DVD 5.1, estará en CD, vinilo y una edición especial limitada como una versión en caja. Lo filmamos en dos noches en Londres en febrero y fue realmente hermoso, como dijiste, es de esta gira que hicimos con «Distant over time» y «Scenes from a memory» de forma íntegra. Así que es realmente genial. Es un repertorio muy, muy especial, así que espero que la gente lo vea y escuche.
M.S .: Hemos llegado al final de la entrevista, si quieres decir algo este es el momento, gracias por todo y esperamos tus próximas novedades./p>

M.S .: Hi John, how are you? It is a pleasure to talk to you… We hope you are well and safe…
Yes, thank you, We are safe and ok. We’re locked here in New York. It has not been easy, but thankfully everybody is safe and healthy. I hope you are ok and safe as well.
MS: Yes, thank you… We could start talking about this lockdown, maybe it was a time for reflexion and think that you have more than 30 years of musical career as composer and producer. Looking back, how do you assess your career to date?
Well, I’m very thankfully for the experience… the kind of music that Dream Theater plays which is not mainstream music, you know, it’s progressive metal music and we’ve been able to have an incredible career internationally and and the so many amazing audiences around the world. So, you know, when I look back I’m just very grateful very thankful for being able to have this gift and to be able to do this.
As a living, I think it’s really special and it’s something that I don’t take for granted for sure.
MS: Tell us about your guitars, you begun with your Ibanez Picasso JPM100 P1, and nowadays you have your own Music Man «Signature», 6 and 7 strings but, which model do you feel most comfortable with? Do you think that you have your best guitar?
I definitely think I have my best guitar. I’ve been with her anymore Music Man for 20 years now. It’s been an amazing relationship and we have developed. Some of the I think some of the world’s really most beautiful and best guitars on the planet, the latest one the Majesty guitar has been just so incredible and so many people are enjoying it and to me it’s just the greatest guitar in the world.For years I have taken people to work on them, it has been very easy.
M.S .:How many guitars do you have?
Approximately, I probably have around 300 or more guitars,
M.S .: It is available your second solo album “Terminal Velocity” in digital format. Cd format and vynil comes out in October, why so long release dates between two formats?
The process of testing and pressing the vinyl takes a long time in addition to the distribution throughout the world, so by now releasing the digital version you can listen to it wherever you want, and if you want to have the cd or the vinyl you can buy them by preorder.
M.S: What can you tell us about this album? Does it reflects your actual style playing the guitar?
Definetely, it does… There is a lot of music on this record is brand new… reflects my current style and technique, that compiles all of I do. Some of the music is a little older, you know, some of the songs I wrote several years ago the song Gemini the one song I wrote a long time ago. That’s from the early 90s and it’s something that I never recorded and always hope to record so it’s kind of a little bit of everything. You know, it it’s definitely some new music but it also it also includes music that I wrote some time ago as well.
M.S: Do you think this album is for all kind of audience or only for guitarist?
Well, you know, I mean it’s guitar instrumental music. So I think that it will mostly appeal to guitar players, but I hope not only guitar players because you know instrument. Music could be enjoyed by anybody and you know for me I try to write music that’s interesting that people can look forward to listening to, if they go on a drive and they want to listen to music or go for a jog or run or go to the gym or whatever. I think it’s great music that could be very inspiring and very positive. So hopefully it’s not only for guitar players, but I think that obviously there’s going to be a lot of musicians.
M.S .: We can saw “Happy Song” and “Glassy Eyed Zombies” in your last G3, but it took 15 years to release this album, when did you composed the other songs?
You’re right “Glassy Eyed Zombies” and “Happy song” I played on G3 So I wrote those several years ago. I also wrote “The Way Things fall” in that same time period and “Gemini” as I mentioned, I wrote that song a long time ago the early 90s, but all the rest of the songs all of the other five songs. I wrote in March … between March and May, so that “Snake in my boot”, “Temple of circadia”, “Terminal Velocity”, “The Oddfather” and “Out of the blue”. Those are all brand new songs, it took me 15 years, but I finally got to record it. So excited that it will be coming out really soon. Only a few days from now.
M.S .: For this album you have worked with Dave LaRue on bass, someone in you trust since your first album and G3, how do you value his contribution to the album?
Dave is wonderful. I mean he is one of the best musicians that I know and he’s an amazing bass player and like you said, I’ve been playing with him for a long time. He played with me on the first g3 tour back in 2001. He recorded on my first solo “Suspended animation” and I am toward so much with him on so many G3 tours and also he’s done my guitar Universe camps as well. So I have a lot of musical experience with Dave and I have so much respect for him as musician and I think he did a phenomenal job on this album as always and I can’t wait for people to hear what he did. He’s just unbelievable.
M.S .: Obviously, the most media news is that you are working with Mike Portnoy again. Did you missed working together?
It’s been obviously over 10 years and so it’s Really really nice to work with Mike again of a very very happy that he agreed to do this record. I had wrote all the music first and I recorded all the guitars first so we didn’t really get to play together, but he did come up to my studio and record the drums in my studio, which was great. We had a great time like was you know, he was really easy going. He did a great job on the out by thinking drumming sounds phenomenal on this and I’m so happy we were able to do something musically again after so long. It’s really really means a lot to me.
MS: Now that the second album is out, is there any possibility to release «Suspended Animation» in cd or vinyl format for people who do not know it?
Well, I think for the first time, you know, I made «Suspended Animation» available digitally and streaming for the first time ever a few weeks ago. So people can hear it that way, you know, when I first release that album, I did it on my my own record label “Sound My Music” Just the Way terminal velocity is also on some of my music but I mean CDs and and my wife and I we sold the CDs out of our house.
Yeah, that was the only way that people can get them. So, you know once those sold out they weren’t available anymore. So I just 15 years later made it available digitally and streaming if there’s a demand for final for suspended animation or more CD’s than yeah, I’d be happy to do that. It’s not really part of the plan right now though it is available for the first time now, get it on Apple music or Spotify or you could you know download it on iTunes or Amazon music. So it’s it’s out there for people to enjoy them.
M.S .: Let’s talk about Dream Theater, the global pandemic has interrupted your “Distant Over Time” tour and 20th Anniversary of “Scenes From A Memory”. Maybe this lockdown has left you time to advance in new compositions, right?
Well, we were able to do a lot of touring thankfully but you said for «Distance Over Time» and «Scenes from a Memory». We play through Europe twice through North America twice. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to play in Asia and Australia we were supposed to do that in the spring but because of the pandemic we weren’t able to.
We’re not sure when touring is going to start again, it may be a year from now maybe longer it might be sooner. If there’s a vaccine, you know, we don’t know, you know, that’s a very uncertain time. So what what we’re going to do is we’re going to go back into the studio instead of waiting. We’ll go back in in about a month or so and we’ll start working on a new album and that album will come out sometime next year probably later in the year, but It makes more sense for us to to do something like that instead of just you know, kind of doing nothing and waiting because the pandemic has impacted all of the bands in the world all the musicians all the live performers who have been able to work. So it’s important that we stay active that we say creative and that you know, we do with it we do it where we’re able to do.
M.S .: We were lucky and we could see you in Spain this year in January. What conclusions do you have from the tour?
Man, We had so much fun on the tour, you know, first of all, the the reaction that the band got to «Distance Over Time» was just really awesome. I mean people in Spain really gave us a great response to the record. It did really well for us and made us very happy to see so many people enjoying it but also in addition to that as you mentioned we were celebrating that the 20th anniversary of the release of «Scenes from a Memory». And so those concerts were really really special not only for us but for people at the shows, we had a great time and like I said, you know fortunately we were able to come at the time through Europe and play in Spain and other countries and in North America and so glad we got the opportunity to do that. The Spanish audiences were great as always. For a fantastic and we had fun.
M.S.: Which is the most difficult song to play about Scenes…?
Probably Beyond this life. That’s a very best song as a lot of difficult moments that it yeah, that would say.
M.S .: Let’s talk about new releases. A new live album is coming soon, could you tell us about the release date and formats?
I don’t have a release date yet, but it will be this year. It’ll be you know before Christmas like before the end of the year and it’s going to be on Blu-ray, DVD 5.1, It’ll be on CD, Vinyl they’ll be a special limited edition like box set version of it. And that actually we filmed it two nights in London in February and it was really really film beautifully, you know, it’s just like you said, it’s from this tour that we did the «Distance Over Time» tour and it features the entire «Scenes from a Memory» set. So it’s really really cool. It’s very very special show.So looking forward to people watching that and listening to that.
